Episode 1 - A Flat Day of Fun

Clare and I have spent the larger part of 2010 locked in a dark room writing, editing and grading our first feature film. So when we stepped off the plane on Saturday the glowing warmth of Hawaiian sunshine was a welcome shock to the system.

Even if we are still on the job - it's on the beach, in bikinis, shooting and watching the worlds best surfers tear up the many breaks along the seven mile miracle.

But at the moment - no one's doing much surfing. No swell for the third day in a row! And with more of the same August-like conditions expected tomorrow (light trades and partly cloudy skies - perfect for snorkelling and fishing), everyone's starting to get a little concerned.

With seven days left of Sunset's O'Neill World Cup and four days of competition to run the event co-ordinators are looking to Wednesday's and Thursday's weather for a stronger pulse. But in the meantime everyone's enjoying the sunshine and snorkel time while they can.

We did the same and cruised around The Rock to see what else was happening - you really know there's no swell when there's fat kids playing in the shallows at Pipeline, and you can skip a rock from the beach to the break at Sunset. Alas, the locals still find waves to surf - even if they are the Waimea river rapids. A crew dug out the wall and everyone wants their turn as the water rushes out to the bay. We left them to it and decided to try out luck longboarding at Sunset at sunset. Not a bad way to end a lay day.
