A Chance To Jump To The World Stage
Some of Australia's hottest surfers have been given an unprecedented chance to forge a career on surfing's elite World Qualifying Series (WQS) tour courtesy of the innovative Jim Beam The Break competition. The competition, that invites surfers to ‘catch the break of a lifetime' by entering online at ww.jimbeamthebreak.com.au, will net one lucky male surfer a $50,000 sponsorship in cash and prizes to help in an assault on next year's WQS tour. The top female entrant will also collect a $25,000 package. Fledgling international contenders like Adam Robertson, who is currently ranked 98th in the world, Leigh Sedley (ranked 150), Noah Lane (230) and Clancy Dawson (308) have indicated their intention to enter the competition by registering online. Joining that group and more than 200 others to have signed up so far are former World Championship Tour stars Toby Martin and Kirk Flintoff, experienced rippers Jay Phillips, Dave Reardon-Smith and Dru Adler as well as big wave charger Jy Johannesen. Lane, a university student from Burleigh Heads who won the Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior last year, said the competition would permit him to pursue his surfing ambition to compete and qualify for the world tour. "(Winning) this competition would allow me to chase a dream that wouldn't otherwise be financially possible as a student and an un-sponsored surfer," goofy footer Lane said. "It's a very tough industry as far as sponsors are concerned these days and only a select few are backed, so winning this competition would mean not having to worry how you're going to have to pay for the next entry fee or flight and really being able to focus on your surfing at each event." Classy Sunshine Coast natural footer Sedley, who took out the WQS Arrive Alive Central Coast Pro in 2008, agreed with Lane in believing the competition could allow him to achieve his dream of making the senior tour. "My goal for 2010 is to find a sponsor so I can keep competing and make it to the World Championship Tour and my career goal is to be able to stay there," Sedley said. "The Break would be an amazing opportunity for me to reach those goals." Surfers that are unsigned to a major endorsement deal can register online now and have until the end of October to submit a 60 second highlight package of their best waves as well as a short insight into their character out of the surf. From there 40 men and 20 women will be announced as semi finalists, going to public and judges votes in online heats over two months before fifteen finalists will be selected to attend the Jim Beam The Break surf camp in January. The camp will feature free surfing displays, physical testing, media training and a marketing session before the overall winner is selected and awarded The Break of a lifetime.
