Toby Martin: King of Capitalism!
In the modern parlance of emails using capital letters is supposed to express shouting which, when you consider it, usually happens when someone is either angry or enthusiastic. I recently received an email from Dee Why surfer Toby Martin that was written almost entirely in capitals yet I was under no illusion what the cause was. Toby is one of the more enthusiastic surfers you're likely to meet and in the email he was expressing his thoughts about his beloved Dee Why club. This weekend they're surfing in the Jim Beam National Surftag finals and, going on that email, I really don't think Toby is going to sleep between now and then. In Toby's eyes, enthusiasm, tenacity and playing to your strengths are just as important as flair and technical proficiency. It was this awareness that served him so well on the World Tour. Now that he's retired from top-level competition Toby is spreading the gospel with his his Dee Why comrades. He plans to turn his clubmates into 'SUPERHEROS' and promises they will provide 'INSPIRATIONAL SURFING WHILE THEIR BODIES FILL WITH LACTIC ACID' and their support crowd provides 'EXCITING IRONMAN SPIRITS!' My heart rate quickened just reading Toby's email. I could almost hear him shouting while I read the type and I fear that I won't be able to sleep now either. If you're heading down to North Narrabeen for the National Surftag Final go and say g'day to Toby and the Dee Why mob. I'm not too sure where their tent will be but I reckon you'll hear them. Surfing for Dee Why are Danny Sheather, Isaac Buckley, Toby Martin, Dean White and Jake Macca. //STUART NETTLE
