Watch: The Swell Of The Winter
"An epic swell that left the whole town exhausted," is how filmmaker Justin Spencer described the protracted swell that recently struck Vicco. "Filmed over four incredible days in this very special place.'
Unlike previous videos of the swell, Justin focuses less on the aesthetic appeal of the Vicco coast but more on the high performance surfing that went down.
Surfers featured include Xavier Huxtable, Darren Wilcock, George Pittar, Jacob Willcox, MacKenzie Bowden, Dan Ross, and more.

Australia: The Lucky Country.
Very nice, well put together JS. Cold and windy, a ERT surgeons wet dream, but I see a lot more hats being worn now days. Booties too, the ankle move at 4:48 - intentional or just locked up due to cold?
A hood in those winds was in my mind absolutely essential. Boots a little less so, I'm thankful to have cotton-wooled mine for another season now.
4:48 at Slo Mo...Holy Fark imagine doing that Move....Thats Skill Dazzler
See it all the time……… usually it’s on the sand before a surf.
Insane!
Who wore it best? For me Georgey P.
Was watching Chippa. Solid - but I'm just not seeing anything different that R-Cal hasn't already thrown out. Will be interesting to see how far he can take it.
How tf did people surf there before wetsuits.
Gritted the teeth - and a fire on the beach. And no leg ropes ..
Don't forget the wool jumper!
Footy jumpers were popular, in SA winter also on the South Coast, higher latitude than Vic but still ice-cream headache material.
I have a mate from the surf coast. He has surfed there everyday for 45 years. He told me he saw someone get a barrel there once......
I nearly spat my cuppa tea out just then, thanks Billie.
It was silly though. My Uncle lived in Jan Juc for 25 years and I love surfing Winki and Bells. However, I acknowledge their inherent B-grade qualities.
well said. i look at those big clean swells and think: somewhere must be pumping nearby
Have you ever surfed solid Bells or Winki Scrot? A lot more power than you'd expect given the shape.
never surfed either break, and it definitely looks fun with those big clean walls, and im sure its powerful being a long period swell coming off the southern ocean, but id rather have barrels to pull into. it looks like a lot of work in cold conditions, and most of the rides i saw werent that long because the waves peeled off a bit too quick.

all rode monsters here in early 1960,s
Epic footage, lots of angles, great surfing.
Winki definitely doesn't barrel like lots of waves in other states, although there a few good ones in that clip. But for all the criticisms it attracts it has still got to be the best wave in Victoria. It breaks from 2 to 10ft+, all through the tide, 200 to 300 metre rides on good days and over the course of a year, more good to very good days than anywhere. Sure, there are other great waves in Victoria, and they would have days that are better than Winki when the conditions are right for them, but not with Winki's consistency.
Well said.
For those who criticise Winki and say it looks slow on the Surfcam, we’ll jump on a wave, you’ll soon realise how fast it actually breaks.
It breaks as fast as a wave on the equator , it’s wrapping arcing affect makes it looks slow, but its anything but that. AW
Ripper footage. I could watch that type of surfing in those waves all day long.

Winkipop looking very much like Supers at J-BAY.
How good did all the boards go great surfing for sure but didnt one one fault from any of those sticks on rail, releasing or at speed pretty impressive.
1:05 Classic !!
1.05-1.30 big blue board, plenty of drive and a double tube- that was the one for me.
stoked on that one!
Would like to know what he was riding.
Don't usually comment on vids but that was unreal! Thanks Justin!
Music suited it too IMO.
Cheers!
