Watch: Winki On A Thursday
No need for an intro about the surf, everyone knows the Surf Coast was smoking this week, so onto the particulars.
This clip was shot by Craig Goode at Winki on Thursday, with a great mix of local talent like Xavier Huxtable and Adam Robbo, blowins such as Asher Pacey, Jacob Willcox, and George Pittar, and many other surfers in the mix too. All displaying beautiful lateral surfing.
Toons are by The Downhill Bombers - Tidal Eraser.
And for the tech nerds, Craig filmed it on a Sony fs7 (cine LOG 3) with a colour grade in Avid.
Comments
No denying Winki is an awesome wave when in peak form, but geese it loves to section!
So much pot luck amongst the frothing crowd to be in the right spot at the right time to slide into one that peels off with a decent amount of glide time. That footage does make it look great, but I'm guessing that was the pick of it out of a full day of filming.... I'm calling it: Winki is overrated!!
..... I mean, obviously if one is lucky enough to snag a gem out there the feeling is second to none.
What I'm talking about is the overall experience.... Crowd, luck factor, frustration quotient.
Give me a lesser known local reef where fewer participants mostly know each other and engage in a respectful system involving taking it in turns at a take off spot that doesn't shift around much!
sic tune
Winki. Length good. Volume...bad. Very bad.
Think of crew like Shaun Brooks back in the 90's on his long thin Gash's,
That was how to surf Winki. Gotta be able to catch them and maintain inertia on the walls, but then gotta be able to redirect on a dime on that steep face in the pocket. Some great surfing by alot of crew (goofy in particular) but alot of waves butchered, not because of ability but because of foam. Not that it matters. ha.
when its on like that, the mass produced daily driver board dims definitely dont do the job. Would u say also something with two fins rather than 3 ?...or 4.......but skip the centre fin for want of more speed ?
Hey Thanos. Great question, and in my humble opinion...no, no,and NO!! A quad and twin is built for down the line speed. Winki is down the line speed. Too much of it. Speed control is key. Thats why all these high volume boards look ridiculous. Yep. They catch waves. Yep. They race sections. But try to do anything near the pocket and the board says...not on my watch buddy..im built for speed!! Like i said. Watch Brooko or T Ray on narrow, thin, looooonnng boards. Could maintain inertia around sections w board length, could make quick rail to rail transitions and could hoik it in the pocket and come out of it w speed. I'd b saving the quads for big throaty freight train barels. And as far as Southern ocean goes, id b throwing my high volume 'performance ' boat in the bin. Unless its for the days of dribble. Definitely not down the line steep pointbreak waves. But maybe im old fashioned. Haha.
Gotta respect the power down here imo.
Geez, that got good. the whole thing felt soo vicco, the mood, the (unnecessary, but why not be brotherly) drop in apology, winki at its winkiest.. Downhill Bombers suited perfectly, from coffs, right? I love that too.. that clip makers are finding music that suits, from far-flung corners of aus, dusty rusty for shippies, william street strikers for snapper. my vote for a future clip: mr crissy mertas for wa.
Damn. That's looks average AF. FOMO not engaged. Burleigh to Angourie it ain't!
Jeez, hard to please.
Yeah. I don’t understand what he achieved with that comment..
cool - spread that word - surf coast sucks - stay round the northern rivers!
Yeah ....and its not 2ft most of the year either....
Loved it. Great surfing. Top edit and top tune choice
Must’ve been a lovely feeling to have lucked into one of those sets. I disagree with any neg above. It’s uniquely Vicco, special.
I was impressed with the fella on the red, lightening bolt board. Thought, jeez this local fella has a bit of style………ok, it was Asher, enough said.
Yeah a nice long quad or twin would be the go for me out there.
Cheers for sharing!
Asher Red 5'8" Roundtail Twin Tenore Bolt .
Geez i wish a few more would pile on and start hating Wink. Might be able to then snag one myself out there.
Let me at it with a hanful of punters in the line up! Dreaming these days L.O.L. There must be somewhere close by that's got GR8 waves with less crew???
Really enjoyed seeing the goofs getting some of the best, some quality surfing in there no doubt about it
great clip and killer song by the downhill bombers....jacob wilcox fast becoming my favourite goofy, little bit of occy and a little bit luey egan....hope he gets a go on the tour he could do some damage...and old mates one legged backslap on the opening wave was all time!
