Watch: Tim Bonython // Mullaghmore Made
Tim takes his second trip to Mullies this northern hemi winter. This swell is at the upper end of the paddle size so the crew are riding their longer guns. This makes for a great spectacle when the vid settles into a water angle of the draining middle section at Mullaghmore - that footage beginns around the 8 minute mark.
Not that I've surfed it, but that section must confound anyone who wants to ride Mullaghmore at size. The takeoff requires an 8'+ gun, and a board that size will also work for the first and last sections, however for about fifty metres Mullaghmore forgets what sort of wave it is committing a fair imitation of a BB welcoming slab. That 3' of foam used to paddle into the wave now a cursed liability as the wave goes concave.
The vid ends with a trip across the bay to an open ocean right, which, despite it's size, feels like a warm down after the madness of Mullies.
Comments
Great stuff Tim.
love watching that wave but the soundtrack makes it almost unwatchable
Some impressive waves and rides , charging .
Serious beatings too
Go Ireland !
Nah man, in a way I'm actually coming around to Tims music. For one thing I like that he either a) doesn't give a fark about the comments section on swellnet or b) Has decided to persist with his beats in spite of the consistent relentless criticism. I hope it's a) and he's doing it with that joyful shit eating grin on his face when he does the edit.
Sometimes when the overall product is good, and the music isn't to your taste, well you kind of go, is it to my taste? Is it? Could it be? Could it be my taste? The music for the Mulla section worked. I got it a bit of juice out of it as a surfer I think. The classical build up was great and that interview at the start many people would have edited out but it was gold.
Tims like a national treasure. You cunts are un-Australian,
This was a masterpiece, until that horrible music started at 8 or 9 mins.
Love the way Tims vids can take you to a place though. Always been one of his strong points.
Shame about the music and slowmo cos i'd loved to have watched it all the way through instead of skipping.
Great 2nd paragraph above Stu. Often wondered the same of some deep water reefs.
Hats off to anyone that paddles Mullaghmore. Beast of a wave.
Ireland obviously has incredible waves, but heck the dismal gloom, the bleakness and cold, and the mud, it would all do my head in.
A pint of Kilkenny, a hearty bowl of Irish stew and some classic Irish banter and all will be forgotten.
Probably true, zen, and I did think of that. Could just see myself indulging in too much beer, banter and stew to make up for the rest.
mmm, true @zen, welcoming hearths and hearts. Devoured brekkies, bacon, butter, eggs, black-pud. Friendly locals, great waves, misty seas, empty roads, freezing water, lazy wind (goes straight thru you), aching ears, numb fingers. Licensed ferries. Wild roadside spinach, sorrel and berries. Grainy ales, GLORIOUS seafood, violin players, funny-as-faark locals, warm bars and beds. Sweet peat chimney wafts through cold night air. The sleep of the dead.
Nice Base- kinda poetic.
Or a pint of guiness, a bowl of seafood chowder with soda bread and then the irish banter with locals speaking celtic in the background
Surfed Ireland in the dead of winter it's like nothing else. The cold water is like someone pouring a bucket of ice water on your head, the wind chill will eat through any 5mm wetsuit and get you to your core and then trying to get that wettie off afterwards with numb fingers is near impossible. But all that is worth it with the decent swell and waves you can get. Stay Salty....Yeow!!!
traditional Scots/Irish apology:
"when we heared yez was comin up from down under,
we got rid o the crowds, an the sharks, snakes and spiders for ye.
I'm right fookin sorry we forgot to warm up the sea as weel".
Hah, they are more likely to say how great it is that the Gulf Stream keeps the water warm for them. Keeps the icebergs at bay. A grand place when the sun comes out.
Considering the water temp is a toasty 9C (Tim B's words), they'd be right. Used to surf in slush in Denmark (cue Monty Python sketch...).
Whats with the incessant ads? Surely paid up swellnet subscribers shouldn't cop that.
Was the man speaking in the road about his solicitors pick up line the sound designer?.
