Watch: CJ Macias // My Worst Wipeout
OK, so the actual wipeout and the aftermath only contribute a small fraction of running time - maybe a minute tops, while the vid runs for 22 - but don't go thinking that this clip's being milked for length.
What happened to CJ Macias at Nazare is high entertainment, and it's being told by an entertainer.
No, not entertainment as in laughs and guffaws, but fascination and empathy. It's brutal and it's compelling. Slow down, press play.

It's too easy being critical sitting at home and watching this, but...... why the 1st wave of a set, when there's another behind it and to me the whip in looked iffy, not as clean as some of the others. Either way it's a chilling story and well documented by Tim.
Reckon it's a case of 'when Garret says go...'
Yep that's what I'm thinking. Gilla orang!
Well....f$%* me.....
That makes my day in the office seem very.....ummm....important?
100% agree Stu worth the watch - he was a funny bugger, cracked me up a couple times. "eat sleep rave repeat"
Going down fastest ever or feeling like he's being drawn up? Not sure here but i guess in the moment there's a whole lot of contradictions going on.
He told that story really well I thought - 20 mins of video time for me well spent - 20 mins etched into CJs psyche for eternity
the guy needs a pod cast series on every wave he has ever caught
I struggle a lot with Americans retelling and exaggerating but this guy is great!!!. Hideous circumstance to be in.
...and then a see the shadow......
Cue the music from Jaws.....
Great clip! Not the first time he's told the story I guess, but none the worse for that, vivid description and a sense of joy in the telling. It reminded me of hearing Tom Hoye telling of his leg break at Sugarloaf story.
I sometimes get frustrated with Bonython clips, but he really shows his talent for story telling and his love of what he does in interviews like this. Fantastic editing.
Wow! What an incredible story..
Had me on the edge of my seat from go to whoa.
Stoked he walked away from that one with his life.
Wow, that was intense. What a great storyteller he is. Probably saved by the vest self inflating on the initial impact considering he only had one arm functioning. Would have liked to hear Garrett's version and what he was thinking and going through while it was all happening. White rashies probably not a wise choice in hundred foot surf.
WHS will be all over it and CSIRO will running studies on the best colour options, just like the pink ball in a twilight test.
Wow that was insane! having the mental strength to ignore your messed up arm to survive just shows how resilient he is
