Watch: Through The Mavericks Fog
You'll recall all the drama from last year's Maverick's season: Pete Mel's wave of a lifetime; Twiggy Baker's massive air drop, Ian Walsh and Kai Lenny taking it to the "twelth dimension" during a three-day strike mission. An endless throb of nor-west swell provided the backdrop to stories of glory and carnage.
And this year...?
Not much. Bit here, bit there, but the season has sputtered and faulted, lots of swell but not enough to consistently drain the bowl at Mavericks.
Tuesday saw a clean 20 foot swell hit Northern California under an easing wind pattern. As the morning wooliness settled down and paddlers prepared to respond, a fog rolled through that hid landmarks and kept the crowd to a minimum.
For you and I, it also presented a dull spectacle, though Tucker Wooding captured some drone footage before and during the fog.

Tyler got out of that lightly.
The violence of the lip hitting that water on the peak makes me shudder.
Twiggy said he rode an "edge bottom."
Thats interesting.
From Mike Wallace. Must be a 10"0' version of this board:
Looks pretty easy and almost survivable in those conditions.
I am 100% positive that I would have a heart attack as the first set starting rolling in still.
That's what I was thinking too! Particularly with those overhead camera shots. Makes it look quite makeable. But then imagine getting caught inside with a 10' board strapped to your ankle. Plus I bet those thick wetsuits make it real hard to dive down. Not that it would help much when 25' of white water comes your way.
I'll stick to YouTube.
Wow, Greenough's edge theories being put to the test.
Mav's on these smaller days doesn't seem like a very good wave. Big drop and then it fades out. The barrel nearly always clamps so no backdoor takeoffs.
Even when bigger it doesn't seem amazing. Seems popular though, maybe because its the only wave around that area?
This is probably massive hubris, but give me a 10'0 DS and I'd give that a fair go.
16Yr Old Monster Figs...Charging Grom Yew!
Was that a 20 foot swell?
maybe the drone knocked a few feet off. Most of them looked 8-10 feet to me.
About the limit I'd want to surf Mavs i reckon
