Watch: Biggest Swell Of The Season At Nazare
Two weeks after the Woz pulled the trigger for the Tow Surfing Challenge, an underwhelming affair hampered by fog and unexceptional waves*, a large north-west swell backed up on Portugal's north coast.
More impressive than the size were the stellar conditions, with light south-east winds giving way to light northerlies through the day, providing a rare combo of large swell and favourable wind.
This video was made by ace Hawaiian drone pilot Tucker Wooding who nabs a number of unique angles of Naz.
*Except for Jamie Mitchell's back breaker...

Skimboarding at Nazzare, like riding a shopping trolley down a hill, but with more arm waving.
Makes more sense than most: novelty equipment for a novelty wave.
What on earth is going on with the flappy-arm thing, speed pumping air or is it to get a head start on the breast-stroking in case of wipeout?
I had to turn off when the Guns n Roses cover came on.
too much
Enjoyed that. A few slightly different angles to usual. Cotty's wave near the start looked amazing just throwing over behind him.
Be nice to see a wave ridden without the white wash of jet ski trails all over the face. I guess that's the price of safety and large crew
Amazing sized wave and everything else, but unless someone is getting barrelled, the whole thing starts to get a bit old after a few minutes? Especially 13 minutes of guys going straight down the face....
Loved a bit of Gunners in there personally, and enjoyed seeing the drone angle from the trough instead of above the wave. Have always thought that's the best way to utilize drones in big shifty surf to get some perspective. That first wave of Chumbo's makes it look like he's standing on top of a mountain. Pretty sick.
i just don't get it. whats the point? how is there any fun in that?
super strange fringe surf sub-culture.
kind of ugly really
I'm sure for those that do it, it's the proximity to danger which is fun i.e. exhilarating.
Nothing about this appeals to me
The Gunners combined with men riding moving mountains had the hair on the back of my neck standing up.
Admire the courage of these surfers and jetski riders.
The drone angles give you a true prospective on how big and fast these waves are.
It's always noted how big these waves are but does anyone know how fast these surfers actually travel.
I have read that the surfers who ride the break called The Cortez, have said, that it's by far the quickest wave they have ever surfed.
Can anybody comment on the speed of different breaks throughout the world.
nup, doesn't do it for me - what with the crazy arm flapping idiot, looks like he never surfed just gets strapped in and towed.
Does anyone know what supertubos is like during / after a swell like this? Possibly another one on the way
Think I prefer whizzies in a thee foot beachie.
Ours or Naz? Neither have any appeal to me for surfing but hats off to those brave enough to partake.
PS Gunners rule.
