Watch: Torren Martyn // Shippies
The final surf sequence from Lost Track Atlantic had Torren far from the Atlantic Ocean, making a return to Australian waters.
It was the first time Torren had been to Shippies and the first time his shaper Simon Jones had shaped a board for the wave too. Recently Swellnet spoke to Simon about the process, and you can read that here.
For those into board design it's worth watching just the inside rail as it holds through each wave. Note also the low rocker and how it almost, but not quite, gets Torren hung up on occasion. That he drives through those sucky sections is an example of the board, "kind of bulldozing its way through interference in the wave face," as Simon explains.
Also, the music, which is again by Headland, the song this time aptly titled 'The Weight Of Water'.

To not catch his rail with almost zero rocker in sucking barrels is more a testament to this guy’s skill than any contribution from his board’s design I reckon. Definitely nursing that thing through turns to get it planing. Look at the ease in which JJF adjusts his line on his board in that filthy sandbar barrel from a couple days ago. Horses for courses.
Absolutely agree - all about his skill in that clip. IMO there is lots of more suitable boards for that wave.
nice but all very solo. where's some images, waves or whatever of all the local boys and girls that were there that day? no man's an island after all, as they say
Does there need to be? Why add such footage? Do those local boys and girls need footage of themselves surfing to show to the world? Seems like an odd request.

Love the tune! in particular the drums. Headland totally tore the bag on the whole soundtrack to these amazing films. Well Done all involved. Surfing's not bad either....
Love watching Torryn surf but he isnt as stylish in heavy waves in my opinion. Still good flick and good music. Rasta is also a style master who says his fave wave is shippies which seems a bit odd to me as he's surfed all over the world in super perfect style master conditions..Shippies seems more of a go or die place not a stylemaster spot.
Wow big call. I guess style is 100% subjective and in the eye of the beholder.
Tough to critique the Shippies clip though. Take off under slab - negotiate step - bottom turn - set line - spat out
When considering he’s doing it on a craft that only had a little more rocker than an ironing board I can appreciate the movements and flow he’s using to get there.
When you look closely he shows some true poise in the middle of a maelstrom.
Relaxed face, low arms, blow out to channel.
Love it
Yeah i just think he has more style in perfect Moroccan righthand pointbreaks, but he is ripping at shippies just seems like he is so close to catching an edge through the steps etc..amazing surfer and probably under paid compared to other pros. If he's still living in a caravan that is.I think he was voted a few years in a row as most stylish surfer, so i hope his sponsors start paying him well.
So your assuming he is under paid because he lives in a caravan ?
i ll take a guess that he is very well paid and is tucking plenty away
Where he lives and what he lives in is a cool setup....and is all he NEEDS at present.
Yeah i hope you're right Udo. Needs wetsuits are popular wetsuits too as they are pretty good suits and low cost..up there with rip curl and other more expensive brands. Just hope he is getting his fair share as he is doing some great advertising for all his sponsors. His caravan is a cool setup but Some pros from around here bought a house to themselves in Kalbarri and other joints with some of their earnings when they were more sponsored..Ry used to shout the whole pub with beer some nights..legend, what a lad.
wow, wow, wow
No matter what he's on, thats just some really farken good surfing !
Such a good series Lost Track , big thanks to everyone who put it together . The most enjoyable since some of Taylor Steeles earlier stuff -Sipping Jetstreams etc ...
