So cool, calm and seems to have all the time in the world. I probably would have pulled off and told everyone it closed out.

I would have taken one look at that section and looked for the safest way to get outa there

It's the complete lack of bodily tension and the casual gestures that kill me.
Before the barrel - looks around, adjusts the hair. After the barrel - no reaction, adjusts his watch. Oh well, wonder what's happening out the back...
Freak.

I’m fairly sure I’ve heard John say somewhere that if a wave blows out it’s makeable.

So chilled and treats it like a little beachie but that what was brought up on.

The most freakishly naturally talented surfer alive, and somehow the stars aligned and he grew up in front of pipeline.
SolitudeSunday, 31 Oct 2021 at 11:22am
Or is pipeline (north shore) one of the big reasons he’s so talented?
SpuddupsSunday, 31 Oct 2021 at 12:43pm
Good question. I guess we'll never know. My thinking is that he had the natural talent, but growing up in front of Pipeline was the icing on the cake. Mostly natural talent though. I mean Kelly Slater grew up at Cocoa Beach but ended up being a seven time Pipe Master, so growing up at Pipe is obviously not essential to surfing it well.

One could argue that Slater never actually grew up.

In some ways most surfers never really grow up, although Slater takes the cake. He's the ultimate hedonist aye. What an unusual life he leads. As far as I can see he had no permanent address and never seems to spend more than a couple of weeks in the same place. You never really see him with a girlfriend and I believe he has a daughter somewhere that he seems to have very little to do with. What about his mum? Does he ever spend time with her?
He's nothing left to prove in competitive surfing and yet he's still muddling away on the tour with steadily diminishing returns.
As much as I would love to have his surfing skills I wouldn't swap lives with him for all the money in the world. It seems like a pretty hollow existence to me.

Geez Spuddups, that's a bit glass half empty mate. Seems to me he's living every surfers' dream, lovely GF, his own insane wave pool (I know he sold it, but he's still king of the castle) , 11 world tiles, own clothing label and so much coin he could never spend it all. And all that's before he hits the water and surfs 30 years younger than he should with a once in a lifetime level of talent in all conditions. Almost universal respect as arguably the greatest sportsperson ever. If that's a hollow existence, sign me up.

So many things which are hard to quantify. My old man used to say money doesn’t buy happiness but it s a bloody good start. That being said I reckon good health is probably # 1 and the rest falls into place…. family , community , a sense of belonging, achievement, etc . Congratulations to the high achievers in whatever field surfing included but at the end of the day it’s probably not how well you surfed the tube or how hot your squeeze is … both things fade….it’s how you lived your life. Keep charging and make a contribution! Regards Nick Callan
