Watch: Spring Sessions at Winkipop
Down on the Surf Coast, a good winter of waves ran into early spring with consistent mid-range days under user-friendly conditions.
This was the case each time photographer Jonathon Spiteri set up camp above Winki during the past month. His collected rides a fine slice of Vicco quality.
Surfers include Xavier Huxtable on the opening wave, plus Todd Rosewall, Cahill BW, Tim Stevenson, Tully Wylie, Callan Cross, and Lewy Oates.

Very nice and an awesome soundtrack ! It looks cold AF.
Awesome...but hard to watch from locked down Melbourne. Wonder how many have moved to Torquay over the past 2 years
Right there with you Garry. Little tears falling on to my bulging lockdown belly.
3 months since waves and one more to go (hopefully!!!!!!!). Don't think I'd need all my fingers to count my surfs this year since the first snap lockdown after summer.
Great waves and Winki is awesome when its on.
Cowabunga !
Cool Dudes,
I got the bomb on the head at 4.34 at bells it was a beautiful wave bummer i couldnt ride it. The fella on the left was spewing , he just paddled out and snapped his 9ft brownie twin fin.
Without doubt Australia's most overrated wave.
Each to their own big red but that’s a big call IMO.. I recon the Surfcoast reefs never look that good on camera because it’s always looking down from above. Beach level looks better.
100%. the perspective flattens it completely
Winki is like Kirra these days only really good surfers make it look good.
Each to their own, certainly, but I spent the first 10 years of my surfing life on the Surf Coast, so have plenty of first hand experience with winki. Strange wave that looks great, but in reality is awkwardly sloped, runs off too quickly, only allows one proper turn on most waves, and is insanely crowded. The Bowl, The Rock, Outside Possoes and Banny Point all better waves for putting together multiple committed turns rather than the classic winkipop speed check, speed check-floater, speedcheck, big hook/carve, wave runs off.
You obviously haven't surfed Margies or Strickos BigRed ;-)
Where is this so called banny point?…
Only breaks well on a low tide and swell needs to be SW rather than the more common WSW.
Fuck why stop there Hamish, pick him up from his house and drive him there too, then wax his board and tell him where to paddle out.
Over rates big red ? Love to know where you live and surf cause’ I can think of 100 spots on the east coast of Australia with waves not half as good or fun as winki. The crowds these days agree with me too so no problem if you give it a wide berth.
I bet you would, Sir Lost.
Some bloody good surfing from a few lads in that clip.
And some.
Winki looks like such a fun wave. Anyone would be proud of that turn right on the 2:00 min mark.
Awesome stuff all-round but especially enjoyed the Kellyesque 360.
That is a 360' highlight for sure. Glad to see it among the mix here.
Love Winki always will. Agree with comments about looking down onto the wave, it's actually a better wave than it suggests on video.
And heavier. At 6' plus lowish tide getting a few on the head is not pleasant as there is a lot of water behind and running down the point in those waves which is very different to up north where they generally don't have that beef - no way its overrated a great wave just really busy.
that looked like good winki, not that westish fatburger it can be. those dudes were carving it up. which one was vic local?
The one ducking into the IGA to pick up some dunny rolls for the Airbnb.
why are they still having a contest at bells?! winki is better 9/10 days
For as long as they insist on have massive viewing infrastructure ( for the surfers, hangers on and sponsors etc) then they will keep it at Bells. You are right it should be at Winki
JJF doesn't agree. 4:35
It's all about the direction... some days it can be so refined
Looks great to me. Like a mirror image (slightly shorter) of my new local.
where have you moved to
Land of long lefts.
I got my longest wave (by 100's of metres) in the Land of the long lefts.
I came from the long lefts could usually get three turns maybe 5 or 6 and then travelled to pacasmayo in Peru and then started getting waves of 20 turns and realised they should be called medium lefts. Also from experience I would say Winki is slightly more inclined to open up than the long lefts.
Have surfed Pacasmayo really good, but the (other) Land of long lefts has an even longer left.
Pacasmayo is South Americas most underrated wave, IMO. What's the other land of long lengths I must ask though?
brc,
As I stated, the (other) land of long lefts has an even longer left. But I must add, that the land of the long left has the (well documented) longest left. In spite of this, my personal longest left was in the (other) land of the long left...hope this clears up any ambiguity
That's some fun surf. Endless turns. Green with envy.
Duck-diver at :34 almost had his jewels cut off.
Nice to see the waves played at full speed
Looks super cruisy and fun at this size. How crowded does it get when it is this user-friendly?
very crowded
