Watch: Behind The Peak
"There's the opportunity there to get just a mind-bending barrel on a really big wave." So says Twiggy Baker about the South African wave he considers untapped.
It's not Dungeons, however, which is the wave most people think of when putting 'South Africa' and 'big surf' in the same sentence, but the long finger of reef known as Sunset.
Sunset is offshore from Kommetjie, and is a very different beast to Dungeons.
In this short video, Will Bendix and Alan van Gysen chat to the waves' pioneers about the early days, and also to its current emperors about what the future holds.
"One of us is going to do it soon," says Twig.

Love it!
Lots of "Hardcore Daphne's" in that part of the world.
Didn't FF once. Great vid. Watch it until the end ya big Daphnes.
Awesome clip, love the sense of adventure
Catch the assym at 2:36, Stu?
Yep, another more subtle asymm at 3:40 too.
How could you not love it.
Beautiful waves, great people, and some storytelling to boot. There are some hard nuts in that area.
(Btw, it's just 'Sunset', not 'Sunsets')
Have travelled with a few Capetonians and I coulda sworn they tacked an 's' on the end. Not gonna argue with Bromley, Twig, and AvG so I've depluralised the name.
Sorry if that was a bit anal of me, but it just sounded wrong. I spent some time in Kommetjie in the mid 90's, and only ever heard it referred to as Sunset.
Never surfed it, but did scare myself at much smaller Crayfish Factory and 365 around the corner. Both Mickey Duffus and Pierre de Villiers were regulars and standouts.
Epic!
Heavy waves! 2.34 is Pete Button, has been living in Manly for a while
to all those big daphnes who charge these waves and especially the 'first guys' to have a go out there ...full respect to all of you.....
great film. loved my time at outer kom; scary waves all round that bay. did i mention getting caught under water in the kelp forests?
Really enjoyed this - do hope the majority of locals are good with it.
great vid and love the down to earth personalities. Interesting comparison to your loudmouth Hawaiian big save surferes (JOB, Koa Rothman, Billy Kemper ect.)
love those old school single fin guns.
I know Twiggy is the man and knows what he's talking about... but i'm confused why he says no one's got a 20ft barrel at Jaws... Ian Walsh? Dorian? Kai Lenny? Billy Kemper? Were those tubes not that big to him?
If he said it wasn’t 20ft, that is probably accurate unless he had a tape measure or something which curved and moved with the wave. It would, depending on who you asked, be at least a good 20ft bigger or 20ft smaller!! That’s how it’s measured I think with all of the different size measurement ego trip sticks…and really !! When it gets big and heavy why would anyone bother arguing with a few feet this way or a few feet that way. It’s always struck me as a weird conversation- I always wondered why some people are so into that conversation- I wonder if they measure other things like that all the time? Weird!! What for? It’s a wonder you don’t see some of these guys carrying tape measures around!! Hahah…. What happened to just enjoying the ride or even sharing a story of getting flogged by a “big wave”. Funny.
