Watch: Winter launch at the Cape - Part 2
Few years back, Cape Solander had a barren run of swell. Stubbornly, the elements just wouldn't align and, though it broke, it wasn't with any great quality.
Since last year, however, the Cape has had a stellar run chalking up many great days. But even better, some have been multi-day affairs where the swell size and wind direction co-operate from sunrise to sundown, and then all over again the next day.
It's meant Tim Bonython's cross-harbour toll count is soaring.
It's also meant Tim sometimes has to split the clips into two in order to show all the great waves ridden. Here's Part 2 of his latest.
Comments
*yawn*
Tim would fit it all into one clip if there wasn't so much sloooow mo.
that shoulder sure got a working three waves in im done.
So much of surf media is boring nowadays. Is anyone else over tow ins at slabs (99% Cape Solander) and the wsl air show. I suspect there are a lot of surfers who are wanting surfing they can relate to. All surfers can relate to paddling into heavy waves, regardless of their own limitations. Tow in surfing is unrelatable for the vast majority of us, resulting in yes... Yawn
I dunno if towing in at slabs is boring, but it is problematic when it's this crowded. Also, excessive slow motion and absolutely fucked music makes it unpalatable.
why oh why would you bother releasing footage of these peanuts towing into a crowded lineup. Majority of those "tow" waves i'm sure the paddle guys would have had a crack.
What an embarrassment.
yep ,,,,,2 minutes in im done ...seen it all before ...........same ol same ol
Is it ok for Jet Ski Tow ins to snake the paddlers? I'll put my hand up and suggest it's not ok....(hey it's just an opinion ok not trying to cause problems)
Swellnet has spoken...no more Bonython dribble...
Looks like many commenters on here have Tim Bonython burnout. He has 221k followers on Insta and 38.1 k subscribers on You Tube. The vid that was pulled from here a couple of weeks back has 140,000 views. Most of the comments I have read are pretty positive. I wonder if he bothers to read the comments on here or even cares what a few grumpy buggers think?
Grumpy?.... yeah you're probably right. however releasing a video for morons towing in next to paddle surfers creates a whole new world of morons that think its ok to do the same.
That i don't like, and don't think it should be shown
Grumpy...who isn't in the 40 - 60 year old age range? Tongue is planted in the cheek. No offence intended. I agree with you re - towing especially given post from Brens below.
he doesn't care and good on him for not, you cant please everyone. re the insta numbers, just remember a pic of an egg got a million followers.
I thought it was very good. Viewers get jaded. Understandable.
I reckon most of Tim's footage is great but his choice of background music is consistently appalling.
The music has more variety than the Cape action at least- bit of funk, drum and bass, trance, techno, house.
Tim needs some garage, hard style and dub step too
Tim does valuable work documenting surfing, but at the end of the day it's a commercial proposition - pure and simple. It's obvious that 40-60yo surfers are not the target market.
Sure Solander's intense, and kudos to those who have a crack, but these clips could be full speed with a couple of great slo-mos and be 2:30 rather than 14min. I'd almost rather watch Medina do airs. No, hang on, course not.
The paddlers must firkin hate those tows.
Is that who we are...40 - 60 year old surfers - the Swellnet demographic? I know I am, but do the Swellnet guys collect that kind of info? Interesting...it's posted here, we're commenting on it. Does that not make us part of the target market? Also jet skis seem to be tolerated @ Solander and cameras can sometimes give a distorted perception of how close they come.... A lot of this convo has been covered before - so I'll leave it there. Got a lot of splinters in my arse and haven't offered an opinion - yet - just musing out loud.
Perhaps we are the target market, Icandig. Well, at least I'm sure I was when clips of Solander first started appearing, but now that I've hit saturation point I think I'm wandering off target.
Not sure on the demographic, though having finally started reading the comments about Dion Agius' recent clip and the cars, there is absolutely no doubt that it's 40+......!
Yeah. Got to admit I already did what Udo commented below and FF'd with different music. I did like watching the last vid which was shot down my way. I had to look the place up though, because I'd never heard of it - which I guess is one of the criticisms levelled at Tim because now I and many others know - but still not many likely to surf it. Solander is all a bit samey now (and the music of late has sucked).....That's better- got some of the splinters out.
Mute and turn the Playback speed up..1.25 seems ok for this vid.
Lol. I just watched it at 1.5 speed whilst listening to the Melvins, Not bad.
Jeez Ignatio has a strong stance.
Super pooman
:)
They do make it look a lot easier to surf than it is.
But as i dont like the bra boys(except Mark Matthews who surfed with manners at shark island when i was there) id invite them to surf a wave near jervis bay well about five waves i can think of that are way deadlier and havent been surfed. Death is a strong possibility. also another near depot thats a sick grinding pit ending on a foamball running down guttered out rockshelf, absolute death at any tide.
Was out there during this session and can tell you the skis and tow surfers were coming way too close. There were 6-8 skis in the lineup and tow surfers would consistently try and enter the wave through the pack, around the top, or under (the normal way). Made it really tough to decide which way to paddle and had a rail of a board skim my feet as a bloke flew past. Ended up paddling in due to the danger I felt from having the skis out there. If they’re going to tow, at least tow deep and around the bottom in a consistent line. Not changing it up, was a nightmare. That’s without mentioning the waves that got towed that someone could have paddled
Sounds fun
Thanks Bren. Good to have the perspective from someone first hand. I know I'd hate skis buzzing around me while paddling. I had the perception for some reason they were tolerated at this spot. According to this Vic authority they're breaking the law. https://transportsafety.vic.gov.au/maritime-safety/recreational-boating/... .
Likely to be similar in NSW
Someday someone is gunna get hurt.
Thanks Brens, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
Not that i would, but every wave looked like it could be paddled by the right people.
Whats going down @4.33
Tim B ?
Visit from NSW Maritime.
Second time in two weeks. Hasn't changed anything.
Any fines dished out ?
Repeat offenders should have their skis impounded , better still , crushed.
Move on Tim . It is getting boring. You and Kipp need to hit the road, exploit some other break.
No please stay in sydney and do not travel to exploit otherwaves.
4.33 NSW Marine asking if they could have a go at tow-ins maybe?
Skis said 'get in line'.
