Watch: Summer in Tulla
No doubt it's just a coincidence that Vicco is having a terrible summer and URBNSURF is launching a new campaign, but here we are: small and bleak on the coast, clear and consistent in Tulla.
If blue water barrels alone don't stir a Pavlovian response, some words from the Tulla Tub management:
We’re working on a new session type called 'Advanced Turns', which will be launching in February. It'll feature two new high performance turns waves, one allowing you to unload on the first section - vertical snap/turn, big carve, full roundhouse, layback - and then gives you another good vertical section followed by a cutback section to finish, the other wave provides an easier takeoff with a good carving section to begin with, then two vertical sections in the middle - which barrel when it’s offshore - and a whitewash section to finish.
Comments
I think those waves definitely go better with chardonay. They didn't show you what you could buy from the gift shop either?
Can't help but think next gens of this tech will be pumping out 3-4ft?
BTW what is the tune on this promo?
It's a little strange to see promo material from the wavepool - as it's a relatively new type of surfing content.
Normally when a surf clip drops, it's flogging a brand, or an individual. Maybe a resort/surf camp. Most wave pool clips to date have been trying to flog the fact the tech is up and running. This is now a new type of content where it's actually trying to get more punters through the door.
Just a little strange to see the surfing experience being packaged and sold in a new and unique way. My natural surfing instincts are being crossed with my rational brain - it looks fun, I want to go there more, but my brain is telling me it's not really surfing true to its form. It's somewhat dissatisfying.
(full disclosure - i go to the pool weekly, and froth over it - just find it a little amusing seeing the advertising).
Also - when were the hot tubs open? They have been closed since lock down ended and weren't open before as far as I can recall.
the Tulla Tub has been open since November 2020
2019 ...
Re -opened 2020
Yep - just saying that the tubs were getting finished pre both lockdowns and since it's been opened they haven't been opened due to social distancing. Was just trying to be playful and say that the tubs look like a great way to start / end a session but are yet to be available.
Tubs (Hot Tubs) are definitely still closed - bit of advertising license i think. Just like its a no no to jump off the central pier, ride two to a wave or two to a board but all lool cool in clips. PS I'm also a fan and enjoy the tula tub. Has been a really good vide each time I've been. The booking system on the other hand is absolutely hopeless and needs a complete rethink.
“which barrel when it’s offshore”
Was there for the 7am on Friday and it was
NE - E/NE - offshore on the right. I didn’t notice much difference from past times were we’ve had poor winds. All the waves at the start are clean then get gurgley. Just didn’t seem like wind matters all that much??
I reckon the wind needs to be at least 15knots to make a difference.
Had a few strong offshore days which have been good.
Had a few strong onshore days which still barrel but a bit crumbly.
It's the rips which make the difference.
where ya been bone,
Haven't caught a glimpse of ya for a while, except in Merah Bencong's car park probably eating a Mini Mac. The Folding Nettles, Me and the H, have been having a few feasts on the captain of the enterprises bangers and mash, been good.
Ive been stuck on a old faithful rock behind those hilly mountain ranges. Mothers milk from the nipple. The teet of life. The slide at playground of the rich and famous is well broken and cant get a hold of anyone to fix it. Needs repairs bad.
When's Perth going to get a wave pool...

Developers could have saved themselves a few years and much angst by opting for a logical location. Trying to build on prime (publicly owned) real estate fronting the river in an expensive suburb was... illogical, to put it politely.
The grass is sacred
NIMBY grass the most sacred blade of grass
Can't believe that time I didn't fall off during my Cruiser sesh didn't make the final cut.
Great clip. Up there with Free Scrubber for mine.
Could’ve benefited from some quick cuts of the spectacular sight of a board slamming into the wall tho. Maybe kill the music and incorporate the impressive sound this makes. Booom! Boooom! Boooom! And then some ultra slo mo.
And a sequence of the guy who fluffs the take off. Tight on his terrified face as he comes up and sees the next guy going over the falls and bearing down. Wide on the crew in line who look away in horror as one. A montage for sure. To emphasise frequency.
Dig The Tulla Tub but.
Yeah - I'd watch that
Found the clip very boring typical promo stuff.
I would much rather see an unridden wave of each of the new settings and then a few ridden waves with a decent surfer and them reviewing each new setting.
BTW. I still havent done the pool was locked in for i think April then it closed with Covid, expect i have credit might have to lock a Feb session in.
With all the quick editing it's very hard to get a proper perspective on what the waves are really like (take-off, first and subsequent sections, etc). Looks fun but if there are a couple of aborted take-offs looks like it could get congested.
That advertisement has put me off going there, it looks so gimmicky/touristy... like a gold coast in tulla.... bleeurgh...
Saying that, people keep posting that it's fun.
Looks like they're priming the next gen of kooks to flood the ocean, people who think they can surf but don't have ocean awareness or know surf etiquette.
Still, people keep saying it's fun.
Gotta agree it's a bit tacky. I'm kind of ashamed to say I recognised a few social media stars in that vid too.
As for the generation of wave pool surfers...well I would agree in some ways they will be kooks. But - etiquette won't be the issue, in fact, the pool is pretty much the politest, most organised place to surf. It's just wait your turn.
I view it more as a training facility.
Would never replace the experience of the ocean and the environment (concrete and take off area) takes some getting use to - although the facilities are well done without being over the top.
I never think about or relive the waves I've caught there, but like most of us can fondly recall highlight waves from decades ago. For me it's a "yes and" but if I had to choose to surf in either it would be the ocean any day.
Embrace the tack!
What did you expect, it’s an amusement park.
That clip made it look awesome
My son, who lives in Melbourne, recently went there and absolutely loved it. Said the food was fantastic too. He loves the ocean but his current profession requires him to live in Melbourne so he` s going to get his surfing fix there. Couldn`t stop raving about it. That was after 3 months of being home in WA living on the ocean. Not going to replace that obviously but it`s waves and convenient.
Was supposed to head over in May for a bodysurfing thing where we were going to try to tune the slab thing to accept a decent whomping. Was bummed when it got canned. Video reminds me I've still got that jetstar voucher somewhere, not much use now that Perth has been locked up!
it's fun when the sun is out and the water blue.
probably a one and done for most people, unless you live in Melbs.
fukn good workout though.
Yep, bloody good fun, I normally come out of it thinking 'gee that was hectic, I'm buggered'.
Take-off zone is full-on and as unnatural as surfing gets, and like a poster above said, I use it purely to work on turns for when I'm back in the ocean. After such a lean run in Vicco, last weekend with swell and clean waves rammed home just how good an ocean surf is vs the pool. Not even in the same league.
Almost 24hrs later, I'm still trying to process what happened yesterday when a couple of good mates and I drove away from the ocean to go for a paddle and cash in the birthday/xmas vouchers. The whole shebang is like walking into a Dali painting, but despite the concrete and the planes you still can't help but froth when you see the first set roll out. Thankfully, it doesn't look real, cos that would really fark with your head.
We started on Intermediate to get the hang of it, and glad we did because the takeoff is pretty intense on your first crack - the wave appears predictably but still out of nowhere 5 yards behind you and pulls you back a bit like a slab does, and you don't want to bounce off the wall or suffer the ignominy of kooking it. It's pretty gutless, though, and a lot of waves in the set get messed up by the movement of water. The most frustrating thing is the inevitable numpties who've overestimated their ability and either miss (waste) waves or fall on take-off and stay in the way rather than going with the current. We had three of them, and it's pretty frustrating being behind them in the line. I found sooling them in was the best thing to do to make em go the extra 10% and at least catch it.
The advanced setting was surprisingly fun, plus we had 10 in the water so everyone got a wave each set. There's a bit of push to it, and the first half hour was a fun sucky takeoff with a wall with some juice in the top of it. The last 30min were on barrel mode, with an easy takeoff and the thick middle section. The bottom drops right out of it, but is pretty hard to read with clear water and no natural marks, a bit like surfing in glass on dusk. A few blokes got well and truly decapitated by that section, and if you drag your hand in the wall you can feel the push. There's heaps more water moving everywhere, too, and its a good workout.
If they can divvy up the advanced setting into a wall and a barrel I think that would suit a lot of people, but the risk is you'd risk getting the same intermediate issue for the wally setting where there are people who can't handle it wasting waves. If they kept the takeoff how it was at the start, that might weed a few out.
All up, nothing like the ocean, but still like being a kid in a lolly shop.

Having surfed there on days pushing 40 degrees, I can attest to the fact that there were still people out there in steamers when this ex-tasmanian was close to heatstroke in a pair of boardies. Some people really love their rubber.
From my experience surfing it in boardies, it's not the water temp that will make you feel the pinch, it's the wind if there's a bit about. That said, any day high 20's+ and you'll be fine in boardies, maybe a 1.5mm vest to take the edge off. You are nearly always on the go so for an hour it's worth a crack. Surfing in boardies in Vic very rare, take it when you can!
I'm the biggest cold water sook on earth and I surfed in boardies.

I think I spotted a pulled back line up shot in there at 1.01 that gave an impression of the whole wave but at 0.5 seconds or so I think they lingered too long on that one and I got bored. Note to editor - need to re-edit that back to 0.2 seconds.
