Watch: John John and Kai Lenny // Crossings
The theatre of competition provides a limited stage to reveal someone's personality, yet in pro sport that's all we have - well that and promotional pieces carefully curated by sponsors.
The heroes image is pieced together from snippets and shadows.
With pro surfing on hiatus, 2020 has drawn back the curtain ever so slightly on the CT surfer's lives. How have chose to spend their time outside of competition says much of the people they are.
Kelly, the middle-age Peter Pan unemcumbered by family, is using his free time to chase waves across the globe, same as it was thirty years ago, same as it always will be, or so it seems.
Gabriel refused to compete in a contest that featured every other Brazilian pro of repute.
Italo, the defending world champ, thrilled the groms of Baia Formosa with an extended stay, then won the aforementioned Brazil contest, following it up with a win in the French Rendezvous.
And two-time world champ John John? Well, he didn't compete at the Rumble at the Ranch and went sailing instead...

Unexpectedly watchable. I thought it was going to be "hero watermen, capable of anything, overcoming odds, this is how you should live your life, be free, no boundaries and drink Redbull" but it was oddly poetic.....
Wonders never cease!
Yeah agreed. It was great! And I didn't expect that. I expected to skip through the 20 odd minutes in about 2, but ended up watching the whole thing. The soundtrack had a lot to do with it, and the call of freedom every time the boat got up on the foils! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Cheers!
Agree. That was sick.
Cool vid.
Open ocean sailing is truly exhilarating. Good for the mind, good for the body and especially good for the soul.
A thoroughly enjoyable watch.
That just blew my mind!
I'm now looking for foiling 19 foot catamarans for sale.
So good!!!!
Add me to the list that unexpectedly really enjoyed this. I’ve never sailed but It’s got me hanging to fly across the sea on one of these!
AWESOME !!
My wife and I were in Oahu last year for my birthday. My gift to myself on the day was a sailing trip on a catamaran. Loved it and seeing the boys reminded me of how much of a blast it was, but more importantly, how beautiful the water colour is.
Nice one chaps.
I wish Kai would find a spanner.
