Watch: Raw Rifles
Perhaps not the best angle of Rifles, mostly you see it filmed from the boat channel, though the land angle provides a good idea of the speed of the wave.
The footage is raw - read: pretty much unedited - so there are lots of empty waves and no backing track save the thrum of distant sets and the fizz of shorebreak.
First wave isn't ridden till the 2:00 min mark.
Check 3:54 for grom takeoff with assistance from Dad.

What a wave. I agree that angle of it really adds to the view with the speed of it, which is hard to appreciate from the channel. Also makes me feel like I'm sitting in the tower, with the added bonus that I didn't have to climb the dodgy ladder up it.
That looks like Christie from Wavepark on that first one. He surfs exceptionally well, a joy to watch.
That over the falls just out of frame looked awful, too. It's no place to go over the front of one. Shallow, violent and sharp....
yeh thats him, trademark uniform
Next time: gather a bunch of really really hot unattainable women, get them naked, soaped-up, let them slide around for a while, let us watch the film, and then ask us how we feel.
what an incredible wave. those empty ones look so easy to mindsurf, but you can see its much more challenging to read the sections when someone is up and riding.
Bucket list wave for me.
I had two days in a row there, similar sort of size, in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq. Max crowd was 4. You might even get a similar number now if you were lucky enough to be there.
Christie Carter on that first one. A tube monster.
How good did that look .... Heavy step off on the second or third wave in the clip....Yeeeow
3:30 mark, whats the big splash way out the back beyond the surfer doing the big hack? it's a big hack but not that big to make a big splash so far out the back!!! Manta?
Love that wave! Got some good barrels there in 2014
loved it but , could they have done with faster down the line boards,?
Surfed it in 2004 with Christie from Wavepark, not for the feint hearted. Watch for the coral heads,
surprised there were so many unmakeable ones.
Is that the swell direction?
Clip so much more fun to watch than pro surfing, gives hope to us all.
Not really a fan way to fast and I dont think actually made a wave
on the plus side looks like you can get a lot of tunnel time a real shame
it out runs the surfer.
Anyone surfed there and G-land (I've only been to G-land)? Kind of look similar. Fast, sectiony and heavy.
hard to compare as G Land is the sum of many parts but let's say we are comparing good Rifles (ie. south swell, west wind and mid tide upwards) and proper Speedies then yeh I guess they are kind of similar, both flawless, fast, long and just keep on giving. Speedies is heavier though and compares more to NoKandui - less almond, more round. This video isn't really that good for Rifles, when its good its way more perfect.
Went with Christie in 08, crowd went from 0 to 50 in five minutes once a few boats disgorged was a great wave. The other wave called Pistols is fun as well a back door peak with a wall. That coral is dynamite further in - Fire Coral nasty stuff.
Been to G-land a few times absolutely love the place. At G-land as long as you dont take off on a wave that is obviously going to section ahead you have a very high chance of making it or at least being able to flick off.
That video clip its almost impossible to make the wave or being able to flick off even
if youre a very talented surfer. Maybe the swell was the wrong direction.
