Watch: The Terror Vault // Part 3 - Teahupoo
It's Part 3 of Timbo's Terror Trilogy and he's saved the worst till last.
"The thing with Teahupoo," says Mark Mathews, "is that it's so unbelievably heavy and it's so unbelievably perfect."
Which makes for great wipeout watching!
Tim's also included a few makes just to keep our spirits up.

Epic! Best clip i've seen in ages.
Well....whatever vague and arrogant notion I have ever had of surfing that place (you know...after you see those clips of thin lipped 4-6 foot blue perfection, and think "well...I COULD possibly give that a crack) were just put to bed. That is next level - and then beyond. Can ANYONE tell me how the human body survives the event at 4:06? How the hell does human cellular tissue withstand the sheer pounds per square inch of pressure????
The dude INSIDE at 10:41???? What's he DOING THERE??
WOW!
Well worth putting on the big screen tv.
Is that Chalk post-knee surfing with a brace on?
Same - just don't understand how more people don't die, get torn limb from limb, suffer severe injuries - when I watch Rus Bierke who seems so skillful on left slabs get monstored over and over .... and when they run one at ful speed and you see the ferocious violence and people just tirn into tumbling, minature stick figures...it's like a train crash you can't look away from
Those Piccollo brothers, eh? Had never heard of them a few years ago, and then suddenly they were everywhere, falling from the sky in Maui, Tahiti, and California, and now they've disappeared again.
Possibly got bored of the tameness of XXL Chopes, moved onto the craziest sport in the world?
Terror vault, perfect name that was really terrifying.
Mental!!!
Excellent!
(said in best Mr Montgomery Burns voice while rubbing hands together)
Well that was mental......great footage ...Question to Tim B...mate is it scarey sitting in a boat filming at that size...and have you swum it filming and whats that like?
How there wasn’t multiple deaths in that one clip beggars belief
Thicc
It's like doing a belly flop from the 10m diving board and the whole fucking diving board coming in after you I reckon. I wonder at what stage in life your balls take over your brains and you decide to do this type of stuff. Mental x 2.
How easy is it to get sucked up the face on your backhand!!
oh no...how did half of them survive that...?
I am probably going to have nightmares tonight.
Spit-diculous,yeeeew!!
Such photogenic horror and survival.
Speaking of horror... I loved the shadow!!!
Has anyone ever died surfing chopes?
Far as I know only one, a local fella, Briece Taerea.
W...........Da.......F........... they're all MAD!
Nope, not even kinda.
NOPE.
The best thing about that footage is I'm not in it.
11.41 that cant be a drop in can it???
Fearless.. my local beachie hammers me in 3/4ft that is next fuckn crazy.. gr8 clip
actually 'that 'photo at the beginning of the artricle is the scariest thing ever.....study it and wonder whats going thru old mates head at that moment....
I could only stomach the first half of the clip... too much time wincing and cowering under my desk. I'll try to finish the other half today.
Thats so funny....I was wincing and groaning half way - then there was one near the end where I actually pushed away from the desk and looked away. Like some primal animal instinct to get further away from danger. Its when you know what damage moving water can do - and then you see it amplified to an extent you thought not possible and for a fleeting second you imagine yourself THERE.....then it goes beyond my imagination and it all goes black. Weird.
ironically I found it inspiring - all that fear I have for sub-optimal late takeoffs in relatively pathetic waves - more common as I age - now i recon I'll just go a bit harder and try and perfect that pencil drop..if i don't make it it and don't get a head injury, then I've probably learned something for the next surf..great insight into what warriors these surfers are..i just love the guts and determination of Russel Bierke. great work tim B.
Tim perfectly edited footage with soundtrack, it's great entertainment. 14 mins felt like 5, I was totally absorbed, thanks.
And just in case the wave isn't heavy enough you've got guys towing in through the paddle surfers and other dudes trying to kite-surf. Next level carnage.
Great music choices.
One of the greatest challenges seems to be avoiding the flotilla - imagine coming out of a wave like Chopes and having a 6m 2tonne barrier to negotiate! BTW is 'wipouts' what they call them over there?
I think I held my breath all the way through that !
