Watch: Echoes From a Silent World

'Echoes From a Silent World' was Matt Kleiner's entry to this year's Lockdown Short Film Contest, a category of the London Surf Film Festival.

The concept for the entries was simple: Filmmakers had to take something old and make something new from the confines of their home. So you may get a sense of deja vu while watching this clip. It's all been seen before, just rearranged in other ways.

Says Matt: "While unable to work it was creatively therapeutic to dive into old hard drives and make something fresh that reflected the dream-like state of isolation.

"The title pays tribute to that brief moment in time where the outside world stood still in early 2020. The majority of the globe could only reminisce on what were becoming faint memories of life outside of the house as reality began to seem like a figment of our imagination.

"Rather than make something that got you excited to go surf, I wanted to make something unrealistic and dreamlike, saturated with colors and details from an ocean experience."

Well that was different, a cross between a surf move and a David Attenborough documentary. Felt calm after watching it. Thanks

Loved the coastline, always enjoy asher's surfing - left wanting more of that and a bit less stylised cinematography (even though it was beautiful) - and just tried to overlook the voiceover that ran fo the full first 50% of the clip with affected gibber... guess u can't please everyone with everything... or maybe I'm just grumpy today - supposedly good art polarises...

Well that was simply tops. Had to pause - so I can watch it tonight fulls screen in a darkened room with headphones on. Like meditating with my eyes open. Love the crossing of genres and art forms. Like those surrealist video art instalments you stumble into in art galleries.

Emerald green crystal clear water always does it for me, enjoyed it, even better if you lost all the hippy shit and edited it down to two mins. and added a bit of music.
Transends the pixels of the retina cortex, really? I reckon we all see the same shit.
Still a good little offering though, thanks. Cheers.

why is it that almost every modern surf film has around 1 minute of arty intro footage before any waves are ridden. it was novel years ago, but boring now.

Cocked hat rocks is a classic location & Asher's surfing is a beautiful flowing speed line that complements the environ it is set in.

Well, I think you succeeded. I only wish it was longer.
Thank you all - really enjoyed it.
