Watch: Just Jordy
We've heard little from Jordy Smith this year, or indeed any pro surfer, however he's been an industrious fella starting up a board label SMITH Shapes with his old boy Graham.
The website lists Graham as the sole shaper, however it alludes to Jordy also working in that capacity with many mentions of his love of shaping, including this nugget of trivia:
"As a grom playing in his father’s factory, Jordy showed a keen interest and dedication to the world of surfing and surfboard design. This led him to win his first U8 South African Championship in 1996 on his own-shaped board!"
An 8-year old surfer/shaper!
Anyway, this vid isn't about SMITH shapes, but is instead an ode to a favourite subject put together by Morgan Maassen.

Very much like. Feel like he could / should be world champion one day.
Agreed mate. He's a great surfer.
Shared the lineup with him at HTs (pretty sure I’m paddling over the shoulder at 4:58), and he was frighteningly good. Never seems to really put it together in comps, though, and really struggles to keep a solid quiver.
And he should be so much better at JBay. Curren and Frankie O remain the benchmarks, I think.
Yeah what is the deal with the quiver thing? Must be a bit of a punish to shape for?
Parko too.
Judge Jordy would have been a funnier name for the vid.
Damn, wish I'd thought of that.
SAAAAAH!!!-th Efrica represent.
Hardly worth the time until the 4 min mark, but if you ever needed to make a case about modern thrusters and performance, pause it at 6:25. Goodness me, that's as good as a cutback gets.
pretty sick. close to perfect.
Jordy in his first years on Tour rode terribly under-volumed boards, couldn't really deal with the heavy lefts.
He sorted both those problems out now. Could win a Title but has to get through JJF, Medina, Italo etc etc.
he does the best cutbacks
Jordy...Jordy who?......geeze dosent take long to forget about pro surfing.....gotta say the saffa rips though.
Makes it look effortless...awesome talent.
Probably my favourite current surfer, along with Owen Wright, when they are both on, his power game is the best.
I agree but would add Julian Wilson in there. I mean he really put it up 'em 2018, pissed over the lot of 'em barr the judges in then end...
Nice guy. I talked to him once in the water about people saying Slater should retire etc; that he was past it. My own opinion was that Slater was still the best surfer in the world. He said when it gets over ten foot, no one compares to Slater. Pretty humble comment from someone with the same sort of ability. Comes across as a real gentleman. Still I reckon I’ve seen many free surfers who surf as good as those guys- just not as consistent. So I liked his comment about consistency, it kind of ties in a bit with being a pro I guess. Each to his own.
jordy and Julian Wilson are neck and neck in the race to be the best pro surfer never to win a world title.
TB?
