Watch: Slabland - Part 2
Tim Bonython calls a bluff in Part 2 of his Slabland mini-series.
It's a classic Shippies day with light morning onshores giving way to slack winds and an afternoon glass off under brillliant light.
Not sure of the year it was filmed, yet many of the waves remain vivid in the memory and all are worth watching again.
Noteworthy - as always - is Danny Griffiths backside aproach. How many big wave surfers have been thwarted by being backside at their local big wave spot? It's a rhetorical question of course, but consider how few goofys have made a mark at Jaws or Mavs to realise that, yes, big waves can be ridden backside, but it's extremely hard to excel.
The level of difficulty ramps up a few notches with the Shippies steps, yet rather than shy away, Griffiths has managed to adapt a heelside approach to the mutating wave. He's taken his lickings, of that there's no doubt, probably some of the heaviest punishment Shippies has dished out, but a hearty serve of trial and error has made him, a goofyfooter, one of the best in the water out there.

Yeah so well centred over his board and an upright position, just enough knee bend and strong as an Ox. Was I mistaking one of the guys had giant quad muscles or was it some form of flotation?
They’re not quads
They’re his gonads
2:55 Shane Ackerman - not sure what to say about that wave
At the point of the axe like lip or lips bearing down on him, a pause and quick interview into what the fuck is he thinking at this point..
Would be interesting...
These slow mo shots make it look easy...ish.
Legendary.
That would be a good interview. Stu.
Looks like he paddled into it.
Fuckin epic.
Gonads or no nads...
They're still nuts!!!
