The Gold Coast Pro 2025: Finals Day

Form Guide

Reality checks dished out and a crazy controversial Men's Final crowned the Gold Coast Pro.

A fitting finale for the event, with 28 waves ridden, 0.4 of a point separating eventual winner Filipe Toledo from runner-up wildcard Julian Wilson. The highest score of the heat, a 9.07 from Pip, was never broadcast, never replayed, and never mentioned by commentators.

WTF? How does the highest score of the Final just go missing? It was like an alien spaceship landing on the lawn at the Whitehouse, abducting Donald Trump and it doesn't make the nightly news. No-one saw anything? When we finally saw the wave taken out of the context of the heat it looked nowhere near a 9, despite all 5 judges awarding a number within 0.2 of each other. Most peculiar...

Look, it was a classic Final, a reprise of the 2015 Snapper Final when a whippity Toledo made Julian look like he was irrelevant to small-wave performance surfing. Wilson had a lot on the line and he surfed like it. There was no capitulation. Both surfers took to the air first wave. Toledo took his full rotation reverse and executed perfectly for an 8.33.

J-Dub's first completion, a silky slob grab reverse netted an 8.10. Neither of those excellent scores counted in the final result.

Julian (WSL/Shield)

Somewhere in the middle of the heat, while an ad break was playing in typical WSL style, the 9.07 appeared in the scoreline. No mention, no replay, no slo-mo, no analysis from Bugs, Richie, or Ronnie. Even if the 9 was legit, the total broadcast fail is hard to accept. With the final slipping away from him, Julian tried to fake Toledo into a wave, then pulled through the back as Toledo threatened to catch it. It led to a confrontation with a fired up Wilson gesticulating at Toledo, to which Filipe crumbled and paddled away to catch a crappy wave and hand the P back to Wilson.

Wilson fought back hard with his two scoring rides coming in the final ten minutes. Unbelievably it was his twelfth and fifteenth rides which bought the Final to a 50/50 call. Could it have been given to Wilson..? Absolutely. He arguably did the better surfing, definitely laid down better combos and more technical airs.

Felipe (WSL/Shield)

One thing should be an incontrovertible outcome: Julian Wilson should be allowed to continue his CT roll on and be granted a wildcard to Margaret River. It can be done, it should be done. If they can grant him wildcards for the second tier competition, they can grant him wildcards to the CT where he clearly belongs. Put either Burleigh or Snapper on the CS while they are there and have a CT-CS one two punch for the Goldy points.

The Men's Final overshadowed the whole day, with the best female surfer of the event, Erin Brooks not finding a decent wave in her Semi-Final with Sally Fitzgibbon, after destroying Steph Gilmore's wildcard dreams in their Quarter-Final. Best backhand surfing ever was my first thought after seeing Erin's 9.43 to give Steph a giant reality check. Yes, Steph will win heats and even make Finals like Sally Fitz did, but once they get into good/great or hollow waves they will get blown away by the new gen like Erin who are comfortable packing proper left tubes, as well as vertical backhand blasting.

Erin (WSL/Shield)

Arms-up precision snaps from Bettylou defeated hand-downs power surfing from Molly Picklum in their Quarter-Final. The opening exchange was crucial; Pickles did the bigger turns but failed to finish and ended a point behind. Judges went gaga for Bettylou's turn placement and granted an 8. Pickles was left wanting a decent wave despite laying down the smoothest frontside roundhouse cutback all event.

Bettylou's Semi-Final with Vahine ended up a stinker as the Tahitian rebounded from an early deficit with big backhand blasts on the closout for the highest score of the heat then got sandbagged by Bettylou into a very, very soft interference call which decided the heat. Those decisions get remembered for all the wrong reasons. Somehow, despite the semi-final finish, Vahine is below the cut-line.

It'll be an illegitimate women's contest at Teahupoo if Vahine is not there contesting it. After today's performance at Burleigh, you could make a similar, less vehement argument for her inclusion at J-Bay.

Vahine (WSL/Ryder)

Solid surfing got Bettylou to the Final and she changed nothing up for the showdown with Sally Fitzgibbon. Two or three solid turns and a closeout hit scored a mid-8 and a high-6. She didn't need the excellent score. Sally couldn't offer anything more than a mid-4 despite thirteen attempts. She seemed confused about what to do. A few half-hearted air attempts didn't pan out. Her turns were weak and wave selection was woeful.

In the end it all just petered out into the kind of shocker a recreational surfer has from time to time (OK, very often). Sal had already surfed her Final against Isabella Nichols in the Quarters, finding a high-6 and a mid-7 for a decent heat tally. Things went backwards score-wise against Erin Brooks when she only garnered a 5 and a 6.17 after thirty minutes of slurpy, tricky Burleigh but it was more than the pint-sized Canadian could find.

Pickles and Erin would have been the Final to see, based on form, but Bettylou was a popular winner. It still seems a knock on women's surfing to see essentially safety surfing winning heats all the way to the Final.

"Look, it's a double rainbow; you'll note the colours are reversed on the second rainbow." - J. Turpel (WSL/Ryder)

It was a dream draw for Toledo on Final's Day. Physically, he was always at a massive advantage over a tall, lanky goofy-footer in tricky, sectiony, head-high right-hand point surf. Thus he motored past Yago Dora.

How do I put this kindly without attracting death threats..? Toledo is ten times the surfer Alejo Muniz is in performance rights. It was a monumental mismatch and Muniz did well to get within three points of Toledo, especially when Pip laid down a 10-point ride for a drain-pipe tube and lofted alley-oop which he landed on the roof of the barrel. It had to go 10 for the degree of difficulty.

Wilson's road was harder, After getting past Miggy Pupo then onto Kanoa who was edge-sharp as always, but his turns and airs left a bad taste in judge's mouths and waves that looked like they could turn the heat were judged well down on what was required. There would be some justification for Snake feeling salty on some of those scores.

Kanoa (WSL/Ryder)

In the end though, they got the two right guys for the Final, no question. Just an epic battle fought in front of frothing crowds that would rival Brazil for passion. Judging by the screams for Toledo, he almost had a hometown advantage. Maybe the collective presence of the Brazilian crowds and their prayers caused the mystery of the disappearing 9 by divine intervention. The one no-one saw, no one commented on, no-one was able to analyse, and yet it determined the heat.

In that respect, it really was like going back to the birth of pro surfing where dubious officiating ran rife in a nascent sport desperate to escape its roots.

The more things change, etc etc, the more they stay the same.

There are often results which are argued over by people and clearly bias plays into it (often nationalism etc). Upon reflection you can usually understand why one person beat the other, even if you don’t necessarily completely agree.

However, today’s final result just doesn’t sit right. The highest scoring wave, as you pointed out Steve, firstly wasn’t shown on air and secondly was definitely not the best wave of the heat. When compared to Julian’s 8.4 for instance…

It was an amazing final, but ending like that just doesn’t sit right, doesn’t feel right and it feels like justice has not been done. It’s a real shame considering Julian’s amazing run, it would’ve been such a fairytale to see him turn that round at the end (and it really feels like he did and it was only the judges who did not agree and yet hold all the power).

Great article as normal Steve thank you for your fantastic insights and commentary as always

Yeah it feels like something was mis-calibrated there.

Richie was gushing about that first turn of FT's second wave: "the whole underside of his board was showing." Yet not he, nor anyone in the booth, said anything about that first wave.

Was weird how it just appeared in the scoreline without mention so the chronology of the heat didn't make sense. Caused by the WSL's stubborn 'recap-over-live' interruptions perhaps?

In replay it's a very good wave, like a smaller version of what Morgs rode yesterday for a mid-8.

Nah not buying that @stu. It's not a very good wave at all, not even close. It's not even a 5point wave. He almost botches that first carve, its clunky..didn't time it right... and then hits the lip as any surfer of a reasonable ability should be able to do w a small flash of fins...not a hard turn at all. I'd personally have gone 3.5. Anything more is a bonus......especially an extra....err...6ish points!

Not going to comment on the scoring. I think the judges are pretty reliable (even when over complicating) - unless they go too high, too early ...for the most part, anyway.

But the telecast is another matter. On review, they did show it straight after the break, but it was a quick one with practically no commentary - and then no further replay?? Left a sour taste and made it feel like a club contest with clowns on the PA. The lack of replays of JW's rides was equally poor and left room for conspiracy theorists.

Watch a fair bit of golf on TV also, and I could compare an excellent score during a surf final to an eagle during a final round by one of the contenders. Slower game, maybe - but not by much. Anyway you can always be assured to see several replays of such a highlight with direct commentary.

WZL trying to make this a mainstream sport, but if us super-fans can't even follow the quality performance action ..what hope does the average punter have? The booth were still fumbling over which score was which until the end. Just a serious oversight in professionalism of the product that needs addressing at the top level. It shakes the integrity of the entire sport at its core.

i thought the telecast was A1. got all the waves got all the replays. one of the few sports not stuck behind a paywall. pretty lucky to get that.
im using a benchmark compared to the australian open golf last day @ kingston heath 2024. missed all the T shots of the leading 2 mens groups missed all the iorn shots of the the 2 leading mens groups showed all the putts of womens groups not in contention for a win and only showed puts and random iorn shots of the leading mens group.
to put that into context for a telecast burly heads 11/10 kingston heath telecast 2/10

I don't watch golf but how many competitors are on the course at the same time?
At Burls there were 2. It shouldn't be that hard.

For me, the worst part of the WSL events is their stupid ad placements and timing, and often just non ads with the "we'll be right back" bullshit. They often occur after a big lull and the horizon fills up, and quite often during a critical part of the heat. This shit isn't a one off, it seems part of their format, and for the life of me I cannot work out why they do it.

@TS, the "we'll be right back" screen is an ad space that hasn't been filled, usually because of some contractual or business issue - i.e the sponsor's product doesn't sell in your region.

For mine, the most grating issue is the in-house ads during critical moments. It's entirely unnecessary - we're already consuming the product - and it has the opposite effect to what is intended.

tubeshooter's picture
tubeshooter's picture
tubeshooter Monday, 12 May 2025 at 12:24pm

ahh, ok. Makes a bit more sense I suppose.

Wonder if them watching in on the tv screen rather than live also changes how they view things versus the judges who judge live. Would like to see them have free rein to discuss scores rather than just the party line. Then not that hard for the head judge to step up and say well we judged that better due to speed on wave etc.

Onlytwo's picture
Onlytwo's picture
Onlytwo Monday, 12 May 2025 at 1:23pm

I agree Ding. The coordination between the actual wave surfed and the commentary and the judging is not synchronised. Then there is the priority of commercials interfering with the three aspects mentioned above. Shouldn’t this be discussed by the WSL team as part of a review of every contest? Be really good to know what process the WSL has in place in an effort to ensure the product delivers for the audience is the best possible. Finally it’s about accountability to the audience which is each and every one of us.

Fantastic coverage all event FR. You nail it effortlessly.
Well, the Margs forecast, although a week out...is showing some serious brutishness. We'll see but i can't see how they're not gonna get proper big pumping surf.
Will Toledo choose the wrong ham and cheese sandwich at the airport just before departing?
Will Jules with his wildcard end up in an epic battle with Jack Robbo in 10-12 foot pumping main break lefts?
Watching Jules through this event was like watching the future of surfing....all over again. How to surf a wave with power, style, flow and to go balls to the wall big. What a bloody legend. And onya Sal for her incredible run to the finals.
Can't wait to see JW in proper surf now the fluff of the goldcoast is out the way...but i reckon the woz are crooks and won't let that ever happen again....dogs.

The final result stank almost as much as watching one of the wozzle jet skis corralling the early morning crew down the point before the comp started this morning. I don’t think it is necessary to ride within a couple of metres of surfers and deliberately spray them with a ski. JetSki rego 460022 for anyone interested.
That and hearing that a well known pro made no friends by repeatedly dropping in on crew over the past few mornings.

They seem to be able to do picture in picture at times yet not always for the interviews.
If anything they should do the interviews in the small PIP and have 3 minute gaps between heats for ads.

I must be missing something, Fils two turns for a 9.07 was broadcast as soon as the ads finished around 17min and scored pretty quickly.. Both turns were absolutely full tilt, full speed and nothing like anyone’s else’s today. No pumping, downtime or soft tap finishes. I could see the 9 or there about.
Erin’s 9 for two mental turns in succession set a precedent in the judges mind, perhaps.
So stoked for Julian and kinda pumped for pro surfing, that was a good comp.

First turn was relatively standard in a non-critical part of the wave, followed by a two stage bottom turn into a lip-tap float reo. Not exactly what I'd call full tilt and full speed.

I much preferred the opening airs from both surfers, which didn't even count, and the idea of single air manoeuvres counting on a point break usually disgusts me.

Fair enough I know I’m in the minority and respect everyone’s opinions - lots of good insight.
I’ll just say compare Fils 2 turns (9.07) against Julians first two turns (8.4).
Fils wrap was up there with an Ethan/Morgs turn even if Joe called it a down carve. and he railed the end section. Nothing left on the table. Jules did two good reo’s and then the wave slowed up - nothing consequential happened after. Not Julians fault he surfed the wave perfectly, but the judges don’t want downtime.
I can only say Fils wave got me pumped, Julian’s looks well surfed.

Heat analyzer is up.

The first 2 air waves are complicated. PT 8.33, JW 8.1.
PT did a full 360 and landed cleaner. JW took off on a section at least 1.5 times bigger, went higher, grabbed, had the tail up vertically, landed reverse. You can make both positive and negative armuments for both airs here. Judges went to high too soon on PTs air which made their job harder for the rest. Personally i think JWs air was bigger of a bigger section with more creativity. One landed better than the other, Jules also had a good top turn before. I could live with an equal score after all said and done but don't agree PTs was better overall.

PTs 8.53 is an outlier and hard to compare to JWs waves but i dont think it matters. Small wave, deep start to the barrell but nose out the whole second half. The turn after was on a small weak section into deep water. Overcooked also.

PT's 9.07 is where the judges really cooked it. I hate to think what was going on in the booth when they dropped that. Someone press a wrong button somewhere and dropped the number too soon and they didnt have the balls to change it? 2 turns, average size wave, he nearly pushed too hard on the first and saves it, second is cool but is similar to a a few JW was doing. On the second turn he does the age old drop the head low to make the impact look bigger. Please tell me the judges don't fall for this in a final at this level? Please.

Next JWs 8.8, first turn is very similar to PT but he holds the rail better, puts it in a more critical part of the wave because his bottom turn is much deeper right in front of a big section. Second turn is similar to PTs but comes down with the lip differently, DOESNT fake a head down for impact, KEEPS GOING and puts in another one straight through the lip into 360 to finish. Meanwhile, all the rail work between turns are a world apart from what PT did. Over all, PT overscored, JW underscored. JWs was better.

JW 8.4, 2 critical turns on big sections, much bigger wave than PTs 9. It looks 2 feet over JWs head. He hits it hard off the top in 2 spots that are very critical, goes onto more work on the small inside. This wave has to be better than PTs 9 also.

All PTs waves were smaller by a good amount. JW is 10cm taller at least and his are obviously bigger in comparison.

I don't know what to make of it. I'm no conspiracy theorist, the truth is usually much simpler than you imagine. I'd like to think the 9 was a simple mistake but the fact they didnt fix it by scoring JW fairly means it's worse than that. Then they break the format by not replaying it, not having a recap, not showing JWs waves in the post show and no one even hinting at the fact people may not agree with the scores like they often do puts a real stink on the end of what was a good event.

Articulated exactly what i saw, but actually put in the hardwork to identify each criitical moment...as i saw it.
Spot on to all of that mate. Legend for breaking it down.
And i'm just over 6foot and have stood right by Joycey and he nudged me in height so guessing he might get flip by 20 to 30cm. Which means his waves were much bigger and had more juice and provided more pushback and more challenges. That wave he got the 9 on was possibly the smallest surfed wave of the day...but the headflick made it look biggish??
Cheers for a great analytical review. This needs to be posted all over the socials and Woz headquarters. As good as i've seen mate.

I hesitated with 'stark' when writing it, thinking that was going out on a limb, glad to see others think the same. Double pump bottom turns is one of the most obvious breaks in flow. That's before any other jerkiness. Are the boards that much shorter now and demand the extra pump?

I was watching on the beach and so many people there that all the bandwidth used up and couldn't comment during the final. Internet was clogged up. The crowd seemed bigger than snapper years and super exciting watching live. Huge support for both and no obvious huge Brazilian contingent at least where I was. I was surprised by the 9 live too but son and his mates (all good surfers) were all OK with it. I thought jules might have got it at the end but judges saw otherwise. Spectacular final and I had no idea until tonight that the replay didn't happen and commentary didn't mention it. Bizarre! It looked live like a solid excellent score though. But no one in the crowd near me blowing up or crying foul. Lots of top GC surfers around me plus a few pros down on the rocks too. Fully agree with this. Not Felipe's fault, both he and JW had been tearing the bag out of it all event and mostly the judging had been pretty reasonable. What a clanger for the final.

Hard not to feel they're scripting shit all over the place on the "you can't script this".

It would be an interesting exercise to see what would happen if you had no head judge and all judges separated from coms and each other during an event. Maybe WSL should even try this sometime with a second panel to test the rigor of their system. It's sort of a fatal flaw with the sport of surfing which I guess has parallels with the likes of gymnastics, dancing and ice skating. It makes it harder when surfing is governed by a commercial corporate entity.

NDC's picture

NDC Monday, 12 May 2025 at 12:08pm

I think in other judged sports (diving, gymnastics etc.) the judges adjudicate in isolation. This idea in surfing that judges discuss and arrive at scores by some kind of concensus dialogue I sense would seem laughable in most (all?) other judged sports.

Olus, the delay in judging decisions and priority overturn moments could be crucial - if a surfer knows they need a 5.0 they surf a wave v differently to when they know they need an 8.5. A judging panel you would think would overcome alot of this delay also.

brilliant. 50/50 heat... not a Fil fan but you gotta accept the judges call. right or wrong or no matter how much it hurts.

JW's version of competition surfing is exactly what i want to watch. his airs have functionality (Jordy's too 'cept for that superman business). i'd like to see airs employed like floaters... just big ol' straight airs with a grab and a bone to clear a section and land back on the face like california games.

Fil can actually do that, he did it at Jefferys a few years ago.... maybe at Snapper.

lastly, the WSL broadcast style... sorry, "style" was eventually going to completely balls up the viewing experience of a final... i've watched heaps of heats over the years where the action occurred during ads. here it is, an absolute shamozzle.

see if they can avoid doing it in a heat that determines a world champ.

southernraw's picture
southernraw's picture
southernraw Saturday, 10 May 2025 at 11:41pm

Yep. Spot on.
And remember...gamble responsibly.
After today if you think the gambling industry doesnt have a hold on the naive and easily manipulated World Surf League, you gotta be off your head.
Who do they have to give a little nudge nudge wink wink to to get a result going their way. What happened to Elo and why, we never found out.
Why is Jesse Miley fucking Dyer always there with a cheshire cat grin like she's won the lottery and doesn't give two hoots how foul the results or the daily runnings of the machine are.
Never seen a more corrupt sporting organisation in my life, besides FIFA. These are the serious questions that need to be asked that as yet, no one is touching. I've raised it multiple times on Swellnet but it continually goes through to the keeper.
Where there's gambling, theres an opportunity to make serious dollars Where there's an opportunity to make serious $$ unfortunately it either attracts bad seeds or those in positions of power just cant resist the temptation. Once they get a taste.
Don't kid yourself folks. This like most sports that allow gambling are not a level playing field.
What was Toledo paying compared to Jules? I bet JW was 100-1 or something. Any longshots that win are a very bad day at the office for the gambling industry.
Hence enter the non 9 wave in the ad break. It's made me wonder if they cut to ad breaks as sets are approaching on purpose so they can manipulate the story if need be. Because you couldn't script how often they cut to an ad just as a set is approaching...and the highest score of the heat goes down. So many questions and they all come back to JMD, Dave Prodan and the gambling industry.
Anyone that wants to really do a groundbreaking story and possibly uncover the biggest sports rort in history, here's your opportunity. Someones making a whole lot of money out of these rigged results right now purely because surfing is such a small scale cottage sport, no one is really watching outside of the extreme surf fans...but as far as gambling goes, it sits neck and neck with all the biggest sports in the world,...without the scrutiny. No one is noticing. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Juicy subject.

Is there any way of seeing the open interest on the books at different odds, live? Net exposures? Do we get to do that with all the online platforms, a bit like in stock and option markets? Can we see the bookies re-insuring with each other, for want of a better word? Has the internet and online gambling platforms given punters that kind of information? Even Felipe would have been surprised that he got 9.07; he didn’t even claim on that wave like he usually does when he surfs a wave in the excellent range. The whole incident is highly suspicious and raises serious questions about the integrity of the WSL. It’s a pity as the WSL only recently improved its public image by restructuring the 2026 tour but now that image is in tatters. This will soon become known in the surfing annals as Burleighgate. One of the most interesting things is how many people are complicit in the broadcast and confusion of the over score?

You have the three commentators, various managers of the production, the head judge, to name a few.
How can reasonable people ignore the wave, the score, the replay?

Makes me take the sport and what they doll out even less serious than I already did. Full WWE stuff.

Reminds me of being a kid back in the day and getting a glimpse on TV of that tripe ‘Days of Our Lives’.

I can give the wsl a break on the ads when it's a short to mid period swell. They've got to run ads and there were barely any lulls so it's going to be tough to find space when nothing is happening.

With all this push back about the 9.07, I wonder if they'll release a statement explaining it. They did that to explain why they controversially scored Adriano's floater more than Owen's airs back in the day in Brazil. Bigger wave with a more critical landing was the explanation from memory, which made me kind of accept that call.

I can't see how this can be explained like that.

And now that JW has proven his CT cred, we better all go buy some of his Rivia board shorts. Did anyone really believe he still had the "competitive fire" and isn't just getting back to competing to promote his own clothing brand? Or is that too cynical?

Hasn't been mentioned but I thought the exchange of words late in the Final was telling. Jules tried to sell Fil the wave, but Fil wasn't buying.

When Jules started blowing up his attention was taken away from the immediate contest - good judgement took a backseat to emotion. Richie and Rabbit seemed surprised that Fil engaged with him, but I thought it was the best thing he could've done. He even paddled towards Jules at one point so they were sitting closer. A clever coach couldn't have asked for more.

Fil had the lead and had priority while his opponent was moments away from a meltdown. The sensible thing for Fil to do is hand him some more fuel.

Surfing is often hard to judge especially when it's close, or when you are comparing one wave with two turns to another wave with more turns.

But to me Felipes two turn waves was surfed as well as it could be, while Julian's wave with more turns wasnt.

Hence why a whole judging panels see's things as they did.

Personally i think Julian's airs were also a bit over scored big difference between a full rotation and 180 no mater how you tweak things.

End of the day i think Filipes win was well deserved, better surfer in the heat and the better surfer in the comp overall.

Great write up Steve! I think this contest will leave a salty taste in most surf fans mouths for a long time to come. There's no point in buying or participating in a product if that product no longer has merit or value. I fear this could be the tipping point for the WSL with a large section of it's fan base and I'm one of them. Odds are the WSL has already got the brooms out though for the monumental rug sweeping that is about to occur.

I think the only redeeming option (or possible option) would be for a macking Margs swell, with a few days at the box. It'll be interesting to see if Fil puts his big boy pants on or if he'll get completely shown up by the rest of the tour (including the women) again like he was at Pipe.

Not sure that Fil can’t compete in bigger waves. He just doesn’t like those reef breaks like pipe or chopes when they crash straight into the reef. I think he would be fine at big Margie’s just maybe not so fond of the box (if they ever surf there)

A counter point to your comment Stu about Fil gaining the mental edge over JW after their verbal exchange was the strange decision of Fil to catch the very next wave. Could have easily stuck on JW's shoulder, called him a whinging brat, told him to respect the judges and get on with surfing...then proceed to make sure he didn't get another wave. Instead he disappeared on a nothing wave and left Jules all to himself with priority.
No way was Fil's wave a 9.07 but over/under scored waves probably happen in every heat it's just they are palpably more visible at the pointy end of the comp.

The real issue is the telecast.
Interesting to find out who actually controls the production ie the person in the control booth deciding what to show and when (I'm guessing it's a faceless producer, maybe not even a dedicated surfer) and if they have a whole series of guidelines including advertising, the seemingly compulsory interview of the heat winner and roving action from the crowd and water (by Vaughan and Kaipo) that they have to include.
Second point would be if the commentators are under contractual conditions to not speak negatively about the judges or WSL in general. So much so that they can't even constructively critique any of it even if it's an obvious and valid point.

Stu, maybe a project for you: an in depth interview with the head of commentary (Ronnie or Joe?) and the TV production head asking some questions and raising some points they don't want to hear.

Thats the way I saw it too- Pip had priority and the lead and control of the heat and after the confrontation paddled away and caught an absolute nothing wave- which gave Jules a shot at taking back control of the heat, and he very nearly did.
His next wave after Pip handed back P was his high score.

That should have been Toledo's wave.

Based on that, you'd give Julians emotional gamesmanship a huge tick.

I missed the final, just watched the clip @Stu put up.
That was not a 9 point ride.
No way.
Not is the context of some of the surfing I watched go down yesterday.
And how the fuck do they miss that wave in the webcast?
And not mention it. Bizarre.
The telecasts are shitting me ATM, especially Turpel constantly rabbiting on about bullshit from his encyclopedic knowledge of the not that relevant while live action is taking place.
They just can't shut up and don't commentate on what is going down in front of them too much, always finishing off some nonsense point while a surfer is up and riding or sets are approaching the line up.
Too much live action gets missed.
I'm always thinking "Just shut up for a minute" and "I don't need to know that Joe, why aren't you more like Ritchie Benaud".
And do we really need to do interviews with every heat winner during every next heat?
So often the live action is just a small screen while the previous heat winner is full screen and it's a catch up after a meaningless last heat winner recap and shout out. With the recap interviews and the bonsoy breaks and the Kaipo water crosses and Turpel telling me what the surfer's brother had for breakfast in 2007 at Huntington it all gets too busy and the actual competition in the water gets lost in the noise too often.
And no criticism allowed ever of some of the off judging calls, and the fucking Surfline "it's six to eight foot" when it's 2 to 3 just adds to the way too sugary syrup for mine.

No way that wave of Fil's was a 9.
A great contest in so many ways overshadowed again by shit judging.
Burleigh is such a good comp. venue
Having said that I really like the Blakeys, and Rabbit is always a great addition in the booth, "Yar!".
And Steve Shearer is the best at what he does by miles.

What a way to completely fuck up an otherwise great event. That was never a 9.07, Fil's face paddling in said it all, he was embarrassed, no chest-thumping thanks to god carry-on, he knew that was bullshit.
Big props to Julian for going so hard at him, it's great to see a bit of mongrel back in the sport, we need a good dose of agro every now and then not the passive love-in we usually see. As for Julian's surfing, he was on fire all event and showed just how shit the system is with a bunch of guys on the tour that are nowhere near his level. For me, as much as I love EE and his surfing, JW showed why EE will probably never will a world title unless he really steps up his air game and agro. Great write up as always Steve, thank you.

It was obvious to me that Pip was faster /cleaner and a level above everybody else...Julian was incredible and showed a lot of the vanilla journeymen on tour that having heat management down to a fine art and his surfing is still Ct level......

as far as the scoring , Pip was faster and landed cleaner than Jules Slob airs which the landings were ...very slobish.....and yep Pip is the best smaller wave surfer in the world and a pleasure to watch!

It is interesting that the commentators have all gone 'conspiracy theory' on this. Why would they do this, you have to ask? The truth is you can make some kind of case here. The WSL has been glazing Toledo relentlessly this year. Why, because so many of the megastars have jumped ship, as FR mentioned. Sports need hero narratives and this is the one they have chosen. Crumbs what a clusterf***. The only sport star you can hang your organisational hat on is afraid of big waves. Quite frankly I blame the rest of the world tour competitors. Julian managed to conjure up a hero narrative as a wildcard. What the hell is wrong with the rest of the world tour competitors? Most of them seem to be in some kind of stoned, zenned out haze (except Italo). Jordy could do it, but right from the get go he has never been willing to eat concrete to get it done like all World title holders who chocked him out in the past. Grit is clearly not on the menu anymore. Have to say Erin in the real deal. Best woman's surfer to come around in ages. Very on point with the write ups, FR, as always.

Then I read Steve’s summary - and I had some context for the double bird - perhaps legitimate, not belligerent… so good to have these reports from a journalist and a platform outside the sycophantic wsl tent

Thanks Freeride for another fantastic write up of the comp and to Swellnet team for great coverage. +1 in agreement with the majority here. No way was that a 9.07 and the broadcast coverup was truly bizarre. Overall a great comp to watch but what a disaster for the men's final. Freeride/Swellnet: a question- is there an overarching sporting governance body in Australia that one could make a formal complaint to? I know the WSL is privately owned but surely, if the WSL presents itself as a professional body running 'legitimate' contests there are grounds for investigation. The men's final was a travesty (and I don't think Toledo is to blame, he surfed great). It felt scripted like the World Championship Wrestling. Don't let the wildcard win, give it to the Brazzos...

Having a look back now at how this all panned out time wise.

Sorry, I know its a long one. Never done this before, something just doesn't sit right with me. Seen plenty of scoring i don't agree with, this one has too many weird diversions from the broadcast format and scoring process to ignore.

Summary wave finish to score drop:
PT 8.3 1 min 50 seconds
JW 8.1 1 min 30 seconds
PT 8.5, 1 min- 1 min 40 seconds
PT 9.07, 23 seconds
JW 8.8, 1 min 22 seconds
JW 8.4, 2 mins 30 secsonds

Other comparisons to note:
PTs 10 from semis takes 45 seconds to lock in.
SFs final opener fall, 3.3 takes 25-40 seconds.
SFs second score 4.5 takes 40 seconds.

9.07 was captured live properly, no tech errors. Not replayed.
Every other high score was replayed minimum twice. Airs had a side by side comparison.
Final recap was cancelled. Womens had one.

I don't know exactly how the judging works this season, please chime in if you know?
Previously i have seen some interviews where they explain a process.
Initial gut reaction is written down or entered. Then replay is watched, adjustments made. Then comparison waves are watched and again score adjusted if required. There is a head judge over seeing the 5 actual scorers. The time line below shows that the process was not followed on the 9.07 but was for all the other high scoring rides. 23 seconds is simply not enough time to replay and consider, or compare.

PTs 9.07 drops only 23 seconds after he lands the last turn. Thats done and dusted on the scoreboard.
Then, they dont replay it like every other score, they go into a SIDE BY SIDE comparison of the 2 airs from the start. From there they have over 13 minutes to replay the 9.07 but choose not to. No technical glitch here, they post the wave to insta and go on to replay all julians waves for the rest of the final.

PTs 8.5 takes 1 min - 1 min 40 seconds to come out, not sure because it drops during them replaying it twice, from 2 different angles...

JWs 8.8 takes 1 minute 22 seconds to drop, again they replay it from multiple angles an diving right into the critique.

JWs 8.4 takes about 2 minutes 30 to drop. Again hard to tell because they are replaying it and talking about it in detail..

The 9.07 on the analyzer replay shows it live, not during an add break, was that what people saw yesterday or not? Ive seen people say they didnt show it. Not sure if different zones of the webcast get different adds at different times? Its on Youtube, WSL site, swellnet, phone app, TV so there are probably variations on what people see.

I'm not going through this to prove any sort of conspiracy here, things are always more simple, usually human error. Based on the 23 second posting time the simplest explanation would be someone accidently entered the score too fast for what ever reason. Behind the scenes they probably shit themselves. Deliberately avoided the replay drawing more attention to it, told the commentary not to address it and moved on.

Make what you will of the underscoring Julians waves, at least they seem to have done the process. Either they wanted PT to win as they don't want a bald old wild card showing everyone up, or, they just have bad taste in surfing and don't understand. Not sure which one is worse.

Thats some forensic analysis there Ronny , nice work
So it's the head judge who approves the score from all 5 judges and then enters it into the system .
If he sees something out of line he can ask the judges to "reassess " their score , before it goes in .
Clearly on your time frame this hasn't happened ,
Question is ..... who's the head Judge here , and is there someone higher up who is pulling a few levers to hide this blatant error .
Reckon we've got a snowflakes chance of finding out .....
If it was AFL the journos would be all over it and get to the bottom by the Monday night shows
Vaughn and Jed might be the only chance here, but do they bite the hand that feeds them
..... doubt it

Great analysis but live isn't always live especially if a good set has been missed by a timed ad break. Any clever director can use the overlay and bring delayed vision into the 'live' stream. Commentators call off the vision not the real time action (sometimes from Santa Monica) so it's an easy hack.

Great comp, and write-ups, thanks Steve. I imagine Drouyn would have been stoked watching such a dramatic final, even if its was marred by that 'alien spaceship landing' 9 pointer. I laughed loud at that description. Can't blame Filipe though, those waves suited him perfectly, and he looked the man to beat from start to finish. Good on Jules for providing us all with a dream run, great drama and being gracious in defeat. Real Aussie spirit. So, regards that controversial 9 pointer, yeah, as a former pro judge, I'd say it was a very good short ride and execution of two radical turns, bordering on excellence. However, it was deffo over scored. So, if it was a procedural mistake, like a wrong button pressed too hastily etc, well, hopefully the WSL will ensure that procedure fail never happens again. But if it was a very bad judging error, the question I would like answered is, do the judging panel ever seriously review their obvious errors of judgement post contest? If not, well maybe they really need to. Acknowledging and learning from our mistakes can only make us better at whatever we are doing. As for the commentary, yeah, room for improvement there too. More focus on what is actually happening in the water, while allowing commentators to be more analytical, even critical, of judges scores. It would add to the drama. We'd be more involved and entertained. Cheers.

Priority rule needs to go. It’s dumb. As the heats go on its just one carnt sitting blocking another from getting waves. Momentum slows massively at the end of a heat rather than ramping up. Should just be regular rules/ etiquette - first to feet or closest to the breaking wave. Punters tune in to watch them riding waves not some priority strategy or paddle battle

Get rid of the head judge to remove manipulation. Increase from 5 judges to 7 or 9 to smooth out the average. Introduce some type of process whereby they can't fuck up the scale, such as first wave cannot exceed 7points. if a 7 point wave ends up been the best wave then so be it. But i believe that marketing want finals with scores that have totals of a least 16 plus for some form of credibility. To often they score the first wave high and better waves are surfed but the scoring system doesn't reflect the gap between the better surfed waves.
it is evident that the commentators are also watching the broadcast- they need to be positioned so they can primary watch and commentate live. then use replays as necessary. - i don't think this is often the case.
Production manager is dictating things- to often a set is approaching or surfer just about to take off and they go to a add break or cut to a interview - which as a viewer we get very little insight from as they competitors are censored also.
Clean it up. can't be that hard- get the basics right.

I rewatched the final in it's entirety today- at least what The WSL put out as the entire Final.

19 mins into the heat with Toledo holding a slender lead they broke the webcast for a Bonsoy Brew break and then the Shaun Tomson WSL piece.
17 mins they came back and briefly showed the 9.07 live. Bug did call it an incredible ride.

I'm almost 100% certain I did not see that live on Sat.

The broadcast shows Julian sitting there as the score is read out and he shakes his head in disbelief.

Now JW needs a 9.50.

We see no replays.

The 9.07 wave is never mentioned again.

The whole back half of the heat now becomes bizarre.

Julian catches two throwaways.

You can hear loud chanting and cheering and heckling from the crowd- at one point with 8 minutes to go Toledo hears something, looks back to the crowd and smiles and winks in acknowledgement, looks back out to sea and looks back to the crowd still grinning.

7.30 to go Toledo has P and then allows Julian to catch his highest scoring wave.

Just let him go, on what is obviously a lovely steep, 3 turner (best wave of the heat for mine) for his 8.81.

Why did he give that wave up?

Toledo on a clean 3 turner gets a high 9 or a 10- but he gave it to Jules.

Obviously the pro-Toledo chanting and heckling had angered Wilson because on that wave he flipped the double bird to the Brazilian contingent in the crowd and coming into the catch the ski hits face was dark as thunder. I'm pretty sure he said "fuck you!" to the crowd.

5.30 to go Jules gets a semi step-off from the ski into a big wave- does one big turn then falls. (I don't think this was a heat winning wave, it had a big buckle through it).

4.49 to go JW paddles into a wave, with Pip holding P- Pip has a look, Julian pulls through the back.

Julian paddles back out shaking his head, still looking back at the crowd with brows knitted in anger.

We see Filipe talking first as Jules sits up on his board. Then Jules spreads his arms wide and makes some point about something. Filipe touches his chest, gesticulates with both hands and paddles closer.
Julian looks away and paddles away.
Filipe paddles after him and you can see him still chirping away.
Wilson paddles around outside him and paddles for a wave- Toledo takes it from the inside with P.
it's a total dud and he pulls out of it with a minor score.

Twice now Toledo has given or allowed Jules to run free with P.

Julian catches the immediate next wave and rips the shitt out of it needing an 8.81.

That wave is given an 8.40.

Re-watching the heat, it sure looks like JW did enough to win.

Newspapers similar, here's Bill Bryson recalling his father's sports reporting:

report from MSMedia of the day:

"The Pirates today brought Pittsburgh its first world series baseball championship in thirty-five years when Bill Mazeroski slammed a ninth-inning home run high over the left-field wall of historic Forbes Field."

And here is what people in Iowa read (thanks to Bill Bryson's dad):

"The most hallowed piece of property in Pittsburgh baseball history left Forbes Field late Thursday afternoon under a dirty gray sports jacket and with police escort.

That, of course, was home plate, where Bill Mazeroski completed his electrifying home run while Umpire Bill Jackowski, broad back braced and arms spread, held off the mob long enough for Bill to make it legal. . . .

Pittsburgh’s steel mills couldn’t have made more noise than the crowd in this ancient park did when Mazeroski smashed Yankee Ralph Terry’s second pitch of the ninth inning. . . .

By the time [the ball] sailed over the ivy-covered brick wall, the rush from the stands had begun and these sudden madmen threatened to keep Maz from touching the plate with the run that beat the lordly Yankees, 10–9, for the title."

Bryson also makes the point that these reports that his father wrote were not done at leisure, but within the din of a stadium, and phoned through to the editor within seconds of the game's completion.

Interesting story, fanatic fans,
Reminds me, when I was about 11 , our local soccer team made it a long way through the FA cup, and had to go and play relatively highly ranked Queens Park Rangers,
I caught the bus on my own with the other local fans
We drew 0-0 with QPR , which was a great achievement,
Upon leaving our bus was waiting in the car park to leave
And we started getting rocked by the QPR fans , windows smashing, people ducking down under their seats,
Eventually they ran off and we left.
Great experience on your own at 11yo
Haha

A question of deeper significance....how come little pip never follows competitors around and chirps and points at his chest at Pipe when it's 12 foot? Very strange.....
As is this whole final day. Said it yesterday, none of it makes sense.....

Agree allot of weird stuff happening here. Not sure if you've seen it above but i did a breakdown of the time it took for scores to come in over the whole final. It makes everything look worse.

Short version... most waves take 1-1.5 mins from end of ride untill score locked in, some longer.
The 9.07 took only 23 seconds. How ever they frame it thats not enough time to do the due diligence judging routine. No replay, no comparison.

How ever it happened, they draw more attention by making that 9.07 wave the only one never replayed, every other gets at least 2 from both angles with commentators critique. The 9.07 was deliberately ignored. Then, they cancel the end of heat recap. Ive never seen them break format in so many ways at once before.

stunet's picture

FWIW the wave took approx 1:20 for scores to drop.

I can tell this because on the livestream the number drops when FT appears back alongside JW in the lineup.

After watching our replays of Burleigh Heads on Saturday afternoon, FT flicks off at 4:29:42 seconds. and he paddles back past JW - i.e when the score drops - at 4:31:00.

Make of that what you will but if you're looking for reasons I'd say a producer at the end of a long day hit the 'live' watermark instead of the 'replay' one. Note commentators are calling off the webcast, not the live vision.

Also, 23 seconds seems too quick for a surfer to paddle back out.

Yeah it was over-scored, and yeah it was weird how the commentators didn't discuss it, but I think the 23 seconds thing is incorrect.

ron's picture
ron's picture
ron Sunday, 11 May 2025 at 9:33pm

So what your getting at here is PT essentially already knows he can't lose? Sure seemed like it.

The more i think about the 23 seconds till score i dont see how 5 judges just happened to lock in the fastest score ever on that wave. The 10 the day before took 45 i think. Either the head judge or whoever is responsible for posting the final score after calulation did it. Mistake or not?

Not to mention The next 2 waves from JW were better in everyway and considerably bigger. They had their chance to fix it here but chose not to. That fact makes it look less of a mistake.

Any ex pros on here who know the WSL attitude towards a trials winner winning the comp? There must be a vibe that insiders know of whether its ever said directly or not.

Agreed @ron and @distracted. Great job @ron. I think you mentioned it in your post and saw it mentioned by a former judge on here, that it might have been an accidental pressing of a button. I can't cop that. For a major international sporting event to be decided because someone accidentally pressed a button. Nup, that doesn't slide with me at all and there'd be ways to rectify that if it happened. Fishy fishy. And typical woz, wall of silence. Went back and had a look at various other scores to see what the average time is and if there aren't any others close to 23 seconds. Heres a few,

Heritage heat
MF 5.3 1 min 15.
JP 8.5 1 min 20.

Round 1 H2
IKD 5.5 1 min +

About 1 minute is the average fastest. Most are over, some more than 2.
Yes! you read it right, they took their time more in the heritage heat than the highest scoring wave in the final that decided the entire contest.

ron's picture

It was 100% intentional. After the 9.07 which only took 23 seconds to lock in (mistake) there was nothing happening for 9 minutes, They had an interview and other stuff. They chose to replay the airs side by side from the opening instead. Then didnt replay the 9.07 and the commentators don't mention it again a single time. Remember, we are talking about the biggest score in a FINAL, THE MOST IMPORTANT WAVE OF THE WHOLE CONTEST. They commentators don't talk about it, don't replay it and they cancel the end of heat recap which is WSL standard format. The womens had a recap. Also, the post show doesn't go into it. Somethng happened.

They did show the 9.07 after the ad break in the live broadcast as you mentioned above, I remember it clearly. But correct, we didn’t get any replays and neither was it mentioned again after the score was read out. You can hear Turpel’s surprise when he reads out the score though.

My theory is that they only got the one camera angle of the ride, being just a quick two turn combo, and that the last part of the heat became so frantic, with so many waves being ridden that the commentators and the broadcast director just couldn’t keep up. I don’t think it was intentional, more just incompetent. It was a shame that occurred because it put a bad taste in the mouths of every Aussie watching. It really was one of the great finals though and I wish they would’ve given it to JW.

This judging panel under the Brazilian head judge seem to lose their heads more often then when Pritamo was running the show. Case in point the Burleigh final and the Final 5 heat last year with Italo and JJF.

Anyway it’s all very strange and would love to read comments from others that watched it live.

Yeah where I was standing was under the pavilion where the surfers came up after winning. Mostly Australians around me and I didn't realise there were so many Brazilian fans further round. Lots of cheering for the 9.07 as it happened though and while I thought the score was going to go excellent I was surprised it went that high. My son and his mates were all good with it. There was a clear speed difference with FT versus Jules and watching live I missed all the interactions between Julian and FT and the crowd. Some around me were asking what happened there but we couldn't see from water level or just above water level. I was OK with the final result but still felt the 9 was a bit high but around me and that included many top Oz surfers the result didn't have much controversy. Seemed to come down to the last wave score which took ages to come out and I thought that might have got Julian over the line but the consensus around me on the beach was that it was just under. In hindsight I'm OK with the result but still think the 9 was half a point high. But FT was surfing very well and that was one of my all time favourite sporting events live ever. Almost as good at the WC final rugby 8 to 7 to the all blacks. It was just super high quality surfing all round

dawnperiscope's picture
dawnperiscope Monday, 12 May 2025 at 6:12am

Thanks p-m. The clear speed difference you mention is the point I think needs more examination.

If the judges perceive that one surfer has 10% more speed that could be a 3% higher score. (If you consider speed as 1/3 of the things that scale a technically similar ride).

I don’t think there is any doubt amongst the watchers that FT appears to be the fastest surfer.

Speed/accelerometers on the boards must be part of the future..

And to add, I think I said in the comments during the event that Julian looked a bit laboured during the trials. I just happened to rock up trial arvo and watched after not knowing it was on. He looked really rusty and got a bit lucky to win that but when he got the lead he controlled the rest of the heat with brilliant tactics. He himself said some stuff about how he wasn't sure how he'd go and how competitive he'd be and how he'd be judged. And something about not having ridden performance boards for awhile too. Well the self belief clearly came surging back as each heat went by. He got better and better and clearly has a place on the CT. Whether he can wrangle through the CS will be interesting and that's where the CS held generally in rubbish is a near useless qualifier for CT

Julian's gift to surfing may not just be his competitive savy or results.

Look, I've seen a million waves live and a million waves online.

There's definitely a different impact seeing it live- but that is good and bad.

I've seen waves live that I thought were insane, then you watch them later in more detail and you can see a flubbed turn, or the execution was off or something.
You see so much more detail from replays and slo-mos etc etc.
It's chalk and cheese how much more you can see off the webcast compared to watching live.

No doubt Toledo had a speed advantage in the Final though.

ron's picture
ron's picture
ron Monday, 12 May 2025 at 12:27pm

Live vs replay both accentuates and hides things. Smaller wirey guys always look faster. It's partly an illusion. Everyones seen the 10 year old on a 3 footer pumping and flying down the line, next you see Jordy with slow calm body language. Reality is the speed is similar, one just looks faster than the other. The speed point in judging is also kind of nonsense at the top level, the acutal kmph differences are barely 10% wave to wave surfer to surfer.

The slow replays show the 9.07 first turn was almost lost, pushed too much and saved, looked off. It was way more out on the face from a shallow bottom turn. Watch Julians first, beep bottom turn from around the whole section, puts it on rail in the best spot you could and holds it. Also, the wave is allot bigger.

southernraw's picture
southernraw's picture
southernraw Monday, 12 May 2025 at 12:48pm

Exactly. Like i keep saying, most competent surfers could pull one of those carves out of their backpockets and wouldn't even be proud of it cos he mistimed his angle slightly. And then going straight up into the lip of a 2foot wave coming out of the carve is again, very standard surfing for any surfer that knows how to surf well. The only point of difference was the head thing he did for dramatic effect which most surfers would never do in a surf because they're not looking for points. Seems the size of the wave is getting overlooked alot in this discussion. It was a tiny wave and fils a tiny fella.

stunet's picture
stunet's picture
stunet Monday, 12 May 2025 at 3:18pm

I know it was over scored but, in the words of John McEnroe, you cannot be serious.

If you think "most competent surfers" can do those turns then you're either utterly deluded or you've never seen pro surfing in the flesh.

You're really doing a disservice to any point you may be making.

"Filipe’s wave might’ve been overscored, but it’s so hard to deny how hard he goes and how powerful his turns are." - Taj Burrow

"But I do think that [the 9.07] was the best wave of the heat. The two turns that Filipe did — there’s nobody on tour — actually nobody in this world that can do those two turns, at that speed, pushing that hard, in that small of a space." - Leo Fioravanti

"There’s a huge difference in speed in real life. Just like in Formula One races — you can’t really get that perspective, so it’s easy for people to make assumptions regarding the judging.” - Doug Silva

Neat little quotes from People whos bread has been and is being buttered by the WSL is a waste of time.

The commentary team's actual job it is to discuss the surfing and scores, expectedly, through rose coloured glasses. None of them talked about it in any sense from when the score dropped which only took 23 seconds. Ive done a timeline above and also some other comparisons. Average is 1-2 mins +, even the heritage heat, even round 1 losing scores. Watching it live they said it was good but werent excited. Once the score was in they never mention it again. Then it's not replayed, no recap as per usual. Tell me you think any of that is normal? For THE winning wave of the entire contest....

Jacks winner at bells 7.77 took 2 mins 15 to come in. Was replayed multiple times, slow mo'd, broken down as it should and as normal. Then they have heat recap, all standard format as usual.

This is THE wave of the contest, it decides the whole thing, it's the highest score of the final. It got the least amount of consideration. 23 seconds is not enough time to have 5 guys review it, watch a replay, confirm thoughts or adjust, compare to other waves etc, the standard judging routine. Someone put it straight in early for some reason, then they tried to hide it by sweeping it under the rug. Make of that what you will but its painfully obvious there's an issue worth looking into there.

I know Swellnet has some kind of deal with the WSL for the webcast feed etc.

Who is out there with some juice in surfing that can work out what happened that isn't worried about being penalised?

Re the speed thing, its been done to death, some guys are a bit faster than others, some look faster than others due to size and body movement. Years ago they did GPS speed on a few contests, the numbers were not that varied or interesting, they didnt bother again. Certainly not enough difference to base a win off of.

Imagine 5 guys see the wave, note down gut reaction, supposed to watch replay, adjust, compare, adjust, talk, final scores enetered, released by head judge. You think they got a 9.07 by that process to decide a final in 23 seconds? No chance. Mistake or something else happened.

Go back and watch those 2 airs, there's allot more to compare than just one spun full 3 and other didnt.
PTs is off a section about as tall as he is, clean fast no grab 3 and landing.
JWs section is a good amount taller than he is, he gets higher, has the tail pointing 12 oclock, decides to grab, landing is harder to see because white water is coming upwards around. Also he has a quality top turn before the air.

Let's not behave like whining Brazzos. And unlike them, Julian accepted it with class (let's just forget the Parko-inspired mid-heat middle finger incident - BTW is finger showing becoming a thing in Gold Coast Pro's?)

Just on this discussion about Erin Brooks, and i 100% agree, her backhand under the lip smacks are monumental, but the turn Vahine Fierra did on her last wave after she got an interference against Betty Lou was twice as good as anything Erin or any woman has ever done. Go back and watch it and tell me i'm wrong.

Reading all the comments here and from pro surfers on other sites, it’s interesting that just because you were either on the ground, a good surfer or a made your living from surfing; gives some kind of super sense of sight and/or discernment for what happened………..as the saying goes, ‘you don’t need to be a baker to know the bread tastes good’.

I like seeing all the different opinions,

I don’t think that wave deserved the 9.07, at the same time though there wouldn’t be anyone commenting here that could do those two turns with that speed and precision.
Anyone that thinks they can might need to go watch some footage of themselves.

I don't find that argument very convincing -admittedly from a self serving point of view.

Is there a definition for the 'combo' somewhere in WZL land?
To me a combo is two (or more) manoeuvres linked together in a seamless flow.
A double pump breaks the flow, not a combo any more, it's two individual turns.
Does that matter? Are there extra points for comboing turns? There should be, it's beyond excellent when you see it done sweetly but the double pump?
Combo breaker for mine
Not a combo, not a 9.07

Yes it is.

Interesting watching it from that angle because the score gets dropped at the exact same moment FT paddles back past Jules (check live stream)

Yet in the real time replay it takes 1:20 (or thereabouts) from the time FT flicks off to the time he paddles past Jules.

Lot longer than the 23 seconds Ron is claiming.

I noticed the same thing last night. Made some more comparisons today and figured out whats happened with the 9.07 broadcast etc.

-When the STAY TUNED screen is up they leave the background sound on. You can hear the beach commentary muffled and crowd noise.
-While thats still up you hear the crowd react to the wave. A few seconds later, they throw on the "History will be ridden, LIVE" add. Ironic.
-As soon as that add is finished they cut to the live screen, with FT about to catch the 9.07 wave. Joe is cued and says "Welcome back to Burleigh heads final, still with some time......" and calls the wave as if it's actually live.
-They say a few short comments, not very animated, then the score drops. They dont really address it further and then go into a side by side of the 2 air waves.
-After that it's not replayed as we know, not mentioned, recap cancelled.

They decided to fake that it was being called live. Maybe because they realised they'd missed the final winner and it's a better look than coming back and saying "heres what you missed in the break". Maybe they werent happy with what was said the first time and re did it? I dont know.
What i now know is that what they say is live aint always live...

Now sure what kind of delay they are working with. This might explain why they decide to put up those "stay tuned" screens for minutes at a time. They arent adds that pay. It's just dead air but gives them a chance to make adjustments along the way.

So knowing that i feel better about the judging even though i don't agree with the score at all.

Still doesn't explain why they chose to essentially pretend the winning wave never happened. Maybe a case of "if you dont have anything nice to say" direction.

man, havn't watched wsl in a while... tuned in for this. Julian was clearly robbed. I see not much has changed.

Serious question, has men's pro surfing progressed at all in the last 10-15 years? It seems like, if anything, that while the floor and average ability has been raised, the peak has regressed significantly. Not having JJF and Medina on tour obviously takes away the cream of the generational crop for now, but I didn't see anything all day that convinced me that what peak Taj and Dane were doing so very long ago wasn't as good or far better than the surfing on tour right now. I mean, felipe is crazy, but more so just for his consistency of landing airs, nothing he does is mindblowing relative to what was already happening in 2010. Am i crazy?

grug Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 11:37am

Okay, fair enough. I'm probably remembering those days with the rose tint of nostalgia. I just saw a lot of really good surfing but nothing that particularly stood out, whereas i remember consistently having my mind blown by more radical and committed turns back in the day. The quality and consistency of airs has definitely improved, but turns sure seem to have plateaued. I suspect it was just Dane's total commitment and more freeride approach to every move that allowed him to pull off crazy stuff but never really find competitive success. I would prefer to see a scoring structure that rewarded risk and true novelty and commitment higher than good solid predictable surfing. I mean, if they can continually eff up the scoring in big heats and finals as badly as they did in this, then they might as well make it even more subjectively arbitrary...

freeride76's picture
freeride76's picture
freeride76 Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 11:40am

Dane completely blew the whole thing apart with his approach - nothing has come close since.

the way he attacked waves in heats was mind blowing.

I know people tend to think he had no success, but he made it to No 4 in the world, which is amazing considering he showed no restraint whatsoever in any heat.

grug's picture
grug's picture
grug Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 11:59am

Fair point, he did slowly work it out and rise up the rankings before getting injured. As you say, that level of success is nothing to be sniffed at and even more impressive given his approach. It is also more impressive given that he was clearly never comfortable with the circus. I used to watch the tour religiously back then, because of surfers like Dane, Taj, Kelly at his mid-late career best, Young JJF, Jordy, Julian and Medina going for broke. I just don't see the same level and variety of power, creativity and commitment now. Though to be fair, as I said, until tuning in for the final day of the gold coast, i've barely watched anything more than some highlights since about 2016. Small sample size.

ron's picture
ron's picture
ron Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 7:01pm

Apart from a few outliers like some of Ethan and JJFs rail work in competition it hasn't progressed.
Funny how outside the judgement of WSL is has though. Nate on slabs, creative airs from Noa etc. The creativity doesnt filter into WSL anymore because it doesn't get scored. In part because of the ridgid attitude and probably lack of understanding. For a while Dane, JJF and Julian were making an effort to bring some of the skate style complexity but it was lost on the judges leaving frustration they mention in a few interviews.

We don't get much of a look behind the curtain but seems the judges are too focused on certain looking turns and simpleminded airs. The Burleigh comps 9.07 wave and inconsistancy in air scores highlights it. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Score 2 hard fast looking turns that high at a point break, what are the surfers going to keep doing? Score no grab 3s that high just because its a full rotation, they keep doing them. Can we stop calling them progressive now? Kelly did one at 40, 13 years ago, and he's not an air guy. That is the same style they are still scoring highest. Fast full spin, arms flailing, legs 5 feet apart, its ugly as hell.

When it's 3 foot Saquarema and 2 turns is the best you can do then fine.
When its head high Burleigh the criteria should be different. Guys were getting long waves with Barrels, various turns, stylish connections and airs. I think you'd be hard pressed to find surf fans that would rather watch 2 turns on a small one beat that. Also i think most competitors would rather surf like that.

The only positive thing I keep hearing about the final winning wave is how fast he looks. Where does it say fast looking surfing wins the day over all else? If that's where the WSL is headed show us the numbers. They are wearing apple watches, the info is all there. I'm sure we've all seen the small dog at the park legs going so fast its a blur only to be over taken by a bigger dog that looks like it's barely trying. Smaller frames look faster and change direction easier. The physics don't allow for one surfer to be going 50% faster than everyone else. If someone is 10% faster do we really care? Or would you rather watch Parko?

grug's picture
grug's picture
grug Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 8:57pm

Yeah, you've just confirmed the feeling i had, along with what Steve said. Pro surfing has plateaued, and in some ways regressed in the last 15 years because the actual progression being shown back then was not rewarded. I think this is why i have almost entirely tuned out for the last 10 years. It got so boring once dane left, kelly was visibly degenerating and the super stylish old school guys all retired. Most of the surfers got so fucking high on either god, wokeness or just plain friendliness... or all three at the same time. The commentators became unbearably corporate... there was no real drama and no mind blowing surfing to watch unless the waves at a good break legit turned on. Every time i tuned in to a comp for a few minutes i just got bored or angry. Burleigh definitely had it's moments, but i'd rather watch good free surf videos these days. At least they are still pushing the envelope. I don't understand why they don't get credentialed free-riders in the judges box and just do 4 man 1hr heats where the best single wave wins. More like skating comp, or a lot of other extreme sports where you score out of 100, but 100 is effectively unobtainable. The single most mind blowing wave wins. It could be one single ridiculous move, it could be a beautifully put together combo of moves that suited the wave. It would be even more subjective, but if you have enough judges, with their own biases embraced and evenly spread, then the judging should end up being fair enough overall. Incentivise commitment, radical difficulty and progression, not the boring paint by numbers. Consequential waves will still demand to be ridden certain ways. But at least in the slop, there will still be some crazy shit being thrown down. It seems pretty damn simple from this couch of mine.

ron's picture
ron's picture
ron Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 10:26pm

Yeah some of the other sports formats are interesting. The man on man tactical element puts us a bit closer to a sport than the others where its 100% just a judged performance.

The inconsistent and emotional approach to judging with our current format is my main frustration.
Excellent scores on 1-2 manouvres when a good set wave offers 5. You can't resolve that with thinking, it's emotionally reactive scoring. In every other sport the fans are emotiomal, the judges are paid to do the opposite. Kellys 10 at Bells was a perfect example. Next minute they say it's important to get to the Bells end section and finish strong. Which one is it?

Burleigh point break, we have to swallow 2 hard turns for a 9.07. Would that fly at Jbay? At the wavepool? Whats the difference?
4 seamless turns on rail can get scored the same as someone pumping and hopping like a 12 year old between manouvers.

Somehow the scoring should take into account the waves on offer and whats possible.

That savant like wave reading by favourites like Andy, Parko, Curren, Steph, Machado, Rasta is what informs their style and makes them what they are. Most of them couldn't beat todays guys at single turns, do we care? We need a way to integrate some of that magic with ultra modern performace and that will only happen if it's rewarded in the scoring. If not, surfing will go more towards disjointed spurts of agression on a wave.

If you get asked to recall the best surfing you've seen, what is it? My mind goes straight to Currens first wave at Jbay, Andy at Mundaka, Parko at snapper, Bobby at Rincon. Elements of that approach should be rewarded when done well as much as the modern stuff they score highly.

It's not just the old guys that want to see it. Check out the view numbers Torren, Bryce and Mikey are getting on their videos. Theres a hunger out there for surfing and people aren't going to the WSL for it.

grug's picture
grug's picture
grug Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 11:37pm

Couldn't agree more. All of those are great examples of great waves being masterfully and intuitively ridden. I would add kelly at almost any wave he had done a lot of time at, kelly at cloudbreak. JJF at anywhere in hawaii and any other wave with meat on it. Fanning and parko at any pumping right hand point break. Medina at just about anywhere when he focusses more on style and power and less on the pumpy pumpy hail mary grab airs, though they are incredible. Jordy and julian have had their days and places of the same kind of surfing. I'm sure some of the guys on tour are doing it now as well, i've just missed it. But yeah, man, andy and parko and bobby were poetry on fins when the waves suited it. I would go somewhere between what you and i are both saying. When waves are pumping, it is almost as if the scoring should be dictated by who can do the most justice to the natural canvas of the wave. Who can just make it look the most like that is how it was meant to be ridden. All other standard judging elements are still valid, but there is a holistic element demanded, and that has definitely been the case in judging in the past. in those conditions, especially at classic waves, a single mindblowing move that wastes or ignores the rest of the wave could still get a decent score, but should never beat a beautifully surfed and completed wave. When the surf is junk, I'd like to see guys really getting creative and radical, just trying to outdo each other for insanity. Junky waves can always offer up those opportunities. I don't know. Even if the fucking judges just made it way way clearer what they were scoring for the day, and stuck to it, as you say, without the bloody reactivity and emotion. That would also be okay. I just like the one wave wins, but make it so it is much harder for the judges to overscore themselves into a corner.
