Fiji Pro 2024: Finals Day
Finals day was wrapped on the last dregs of a single swell cycle - while still looking more fun and delectable than just about any other tour stop this year.
World title front-runners JJF and Caity had fled the Islands, no doubt to prepare for the September showdown, whilst eleven-time World Champion Kelly Slater found time called on his career as a pro surfer but opened up the gates to a potential new career as a coach.
His role seemed a little, how to say it, unscripted after caddying for Erin Brooks in her Semi against Molly Picklum. Brooks was asked about his role, and perhaps caught a little off guard, she replied, “I didn't know Kelly was in there”.
Maybe the traditional percentage fee and retainer hasn't been negotiated yet either.

The contrast between God and human efforts was there again today. Winner Brooks said she was “really glad God gave me those waves”, whilst Semi-Finalist Ethan Ewing attributed success to “putting in a lot of time here and building confidence”. Both surfed magnificently.
Erin took out the whole thing by simply outsurfing her opponents, Molly Picklum and Tatiana Weston-Webb. Brooks, on her way to victory, comprehensively outsurfed three of the top five women's surfers in the World. She beat four of the top ten on her way through and apart from a shocker of a first heat, never looked like being beaten in Fiji. Would anyone not have her as red hot favourite if she was competing for the title in Trestles right now?
Like Kanoa Igarashi, Brooks is a completely manufactured pro surfer. Groomed by ambitious parents from day one. And they have followed a perfect template. Skills accelerated in wavepools, tube-riding and charging hollow waves perfected in Indonesia and Hawaii, small wave ripping honed in California. She will arrive on tour next year fully formed, with no weak links. Only her small stature will be an impediment at Sunset, if it is still on tour next year. Snapper, Abu Dhabi, Pipe, Cloudbreak will all be proven strengths. Canadian flag will ensure Olympic selection forever, and God is there to help dial up the waves, if required. This is the perfect pro surfer.
Quick question: Do you think Erin is really a true believer, or is she just parroting the faith she was taught by parents? I guess we will never know, and it's not relevant anyway. In a sport as reliant on fickle fates as surfing it seems of tremendous utility to have a ready made explanation for success (God sent me the wave) or failure (I trust in God's plan) to rely on.
No doubt though, Erin's technique both frontside and backside is superior to every other female surfer on the planet right now bar Caity Simmers.
Erin (WSL/Dunbar)
Griff charged through Medina, Jack Robbo, and Rio Waida to win the comp. He won every minute of those three heats. Won the opening exchange and led from start to finish across an hour and a half of varying conditions at Cloudbreak. That's an impressive achievement for a kid who had no confidence in his backhand up to a couple of years ago. It will remove any talk of an asterisk if he wins the World Title next month ('Aww, he wouldna won if it was at Cloudbreak' type of comment) and improves his odds of backing it up if he does so.
His Semi win against Jack Robbo was a classic. Griff found a way to disrupt the famous zen concentration and composure of Jack. He penetrated the armour of the unflappable Jack - the one with a 4-0 record against JJF, the one with last-minute wins against the Brazilians, and the guy that Slater called the “most clutch” on the CT - by taking the piss out of him. Before the heat he told us he lampooned Jack the way a kid does by copying his exaggerated breathing and arm-waving in front of him.
After the win he told us he added to the comic repertoire by dropping his trousers and mooning him. The West Australian prodigy could have easily fought back. We were told (by Coach Whittaker) that Griff and ensemble travel with “life coaches, spiritual coaches." Jack could have simply squiggled with a finger into an imaginary journal in front of Griff's face while Griff was imitating the breath work.
Alas, not to be. Jack relied on surfing and Griff smoked him.
Griff goes into Finals Day in second spot. He has one potential “warm-up” heat against who ever rises up from the lower bracket before coming in against a cold John John, who we know likes to surf into form.
Jack comes in at third spot, his third consecutive Finals Day appearance. In 2022, from second spot he was defeated by Italo Ferreira. In 2023, from fifth position he was beaten by Joao Chianca. Neither of those heats were competitive.
You'd put money on Griff over Jack any day at Trestles, especially now we have seen Griff detail and execute a proven method for fucking with the famous Robinson composure.
On current form it would seem highly likely Caz and Caity will face off for the title match at Trestles. It would not seem possible that Caz, with one single excellent wave score since Tahiti in May and only a handful of heat totals over 10 could defeat the phenomenal Simmers who has consistently been the best female surfer all year. Therefore, I'm calling a California double with Caity and Griff as our 2024 World Champs.
Rio (WSL/Hughes)
Last word has to go to Rio Waida who is everything the modern pampered entitled pro is not. Rio surfed the best heat of the day against Ethan Ewing, coming from a deep combination to find the biggest wave of the day and rip it to shreds for a high-8, then scrapped a frothy insider off Ethan’s P for the required 6+ score to win.
Grateful, humble, stoked, and still hungry - it was a creditable performance from Rio and a huge filip to Indonesian surfing.
We'll reconvene in September, I guess, for Finals Day.

Previously the story was her parents sold their business in Texas and retired to Maui. Which is where Erin learnt to surf. Everything after that for sure was around Erin becoming a pro

I've always wondered what god does when the Brazilians are up against each other. They always tell us god is there with them, giving them strength. Does god favour one over the other? Does he add up their sins, then give the best waves to the Brazilian that sinned the least? So many questions.
After seeing Squeek at Snapper and footage of her at Padang etc, I really wanted to see her at this years Chopes CT. She has proven how dangerous she can be at mediocre CB, so I look forward to see how the rest of the womens CT'ers step up next year.
Whilst it wasn't classic CB, it was still an enjoyable comp and good to see it back on the tour.

Great comp and great write up Steve, thank you. Seems the happy clappy takeover is complete, but regardless of the cult Erin rips and I for one can't wait to see her on tour for years to come. Just won't listen to the interviews again. Interesting ploy from Griff on Jack, if that's what got into his head, I'm sure it won't happen again. Reminiscent of Kelly telling AI "I love you man" before their infamous heat at Pipe. That trick only works once and I'm sure on pure surfing, everywhere, Jack has his number
Yes to me that interview was akin to watching a robot AI speak with god thrown in and delivered in a really annoying accent. Give me that little hood rat Caity any day.
Tubes and heavy big water Jack's ahead of Grif...but not that much. Grif can ride the tube but doesn't have the zen eye that Jack has for the best waves and lines. Anything rippable Grif is way ahead of Jack. Better in the air, more radical turns, and more speed. Jack can look really clunky in rippable waves sometimes. Both surfers are fun to watch but it seems like Grif is still improving will Jack has plateued albeit at a very high level.

Really enjoyed that read Steve, thanks mate. I’m not here for the results really, I love hearing you riff pro surfing chat mixed with psychology, philosophy and core surfer observation.
We had one whole event, the penultimate comp in a dream locale. What did we learn and what did it achieve?
Not much really:
The men’s top 5 remained the same except Ethan and Italo traded places, meaning Ethan gets P in their trestles 4v5 match up.
Similarly with the Women, 1-4 exactly as they were, Tati boots Gabriella Bryan for 5th spot.
We learned Ezza B is as locked in as church on Easter Sunday.
Rio is the most down to earth surfer on tour.
We reconfirmed Kelly’s narcissism has no bounds.
And Griff is as funny as a fart in an elevator.
On Griff, I hope he tones down the U-S-A style, home coming king, presidential tour of San Clemente he exposed himself to last year. I believe that and his perpetual claims on 2 foot lefthanders cost him.

Found most of this comp kind of dull. Stakes were pretty low and the waves never got particularly good, despite a bit of size coming through.
Biggest take away today was that most CT surfers now have 4-5 months off. Best fucken job in the world.

Last year at Trestles for this generation. Too bad we can't see what could have been its absolute high-performance showdown, hadn't Pip Toledo given up to his mental demons, despite all divine devotion. That's a hell of an asterisk in my book.

I’m about as far as you can get from a tinfoil hat wearer but the “you can script this” rhetoric is starting to shape up to be a little more prophetic than i originally thought it would be. Hopefully my inherent paranoia is shown up and something incredible happens from JJF or further down the rankings. From what I read, her parents sold up in Texas, moved to Maui and then supported her surfing. Wouldn't that just make her parents good parents? Supporting their kid in what they wanted to do?
I don't know why you would push your kid into being a pro surfer growing up in Texas. It's a dead end path for 99.999% of surfers, especially given the hours/travel required.
When you take your child all around the world at the exclusion of all other things (other interests, school, friends etc) in the pursuit of a single outcome, I’d call that manufactured.
Could be untrue, there are reports of the old man forcing the young girl to stay out for marathon sessions in Indo.
Same could be said about Jack Robbo, the old man taking him across the globe from a very young age.
It’s the new way to become a pro surfer. Effective, probably. Healthy, debatable.

I disagree. I've been reading biographies and there's pushy parents and bad childhoods (Andre Agassi, Tiger woods, Kelly Slater) where they achieve success as broken, unhappy adults but then there's kids that are supported, achieve success and are happy healthy adults (Ash Barty is the gold standard example but there's many others).
As for giving up a normal childhood, that's the cost of achieving abnormal success which needs to be made clear to the child (Simone Biles struggled with this).
So unless there's a source to make a claim, I don't think it's fair to chide the parents for doing a good job with their daughter. Good parenting is sadly absent in this day and age and it should be celebrated.
Whatever you think about her upbringing I think it’s great for Erin that there is such a young group of girls on tour, And that they all seem so supportive of one another. It would have been much tougher for Caroline at 15 or 16 or even Bettylou at 16 in a field of predominantly much older competitors

So to your point we are talking about a ‘child’. Of whom doesn’t have the maturity or capacity to make decisions such as this.

My arguement is nothing to do with them having fun or ‘succeeding’. It is simply that I don’t feel it is healthy to expose a young human to so much pressure. I’m sure there’s examples where it works out ok, but can think of very many that do not.
I think it's more art than science but from my reading, in nearly 100% of cases the kids really needs to love what they're doing or they're going to grow up resentful, like Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf as someone pointed out, despite their crazy success. I wouldn't want my kids to be on the path to being the best surfer in the world BUT if they did I'd explain to them what's required, get them to read the blueprints to get them there, offer to support them 100% BUT only if they're putting in the work. TC details what that looks like in his book and it's pretty insane. Not 'normal' by any stretch.
I myself have retired to dedicate myself to my kids, like Erin Brooks dad, so maybe I take it personally that he's getting slagged off maybe unfairly. My 3 year old likes to skateboard, I take him nearly every day and people walk by and say, training for the Olympics? Maybe they think I'm a pushy parent but I'm not, I'm just supporting my son in what he loves to do.
I also think given the two females debuting you'd level the charge at Sierra Kerr over Erin Brooks! Literally the daughter of an ex CT surfer! The whole thing reeks of tall poppy syndrome. Unless the author has a source.....

Wasn't homeschooled, he went to Sunshine Beach High. Was definitely a gromphenom, though as a longboarder at first. He was the Australian U14 Longboard Champ. Only moved to shortboarding after that.
His mum and dad were great longboard surfers.

Spoke to someone he went to school with him and he said he was never around towards the end as he was travelling all the time and was home schooled.
Totally mate. To get the rankings / profile to get into better events, these kids are flying all around the country or world. They're never at school. You have also got to be quite well off or very well backed by the industry.
Jelena Dokic and John McEnroe , both had issues there , and probably still do.
Aren't ALL Pro surfers manufactured? Not a single person is born a Pro-surfer. Every single one of them and their parents made a choice to follow that dream and do what they could to achieve it.
What matters is the pressure of expectations the parents put on their child during this process. In other words, are the parents doing it for their child or for themselves?
I feel only parents that have shown selfishness and a disregard for the well being of their child should be judged harshly. Other parents are just trying to help their child fulfill their dreams and that's an awesome thing.

I feel like Kolohe is one of the lucky ones. Made bank due to the golden years he was on tour for contracts. But has also found himself a niche or created one with his local 2 percent community. So often once off tour those guys have no sense of what to do with the rest of their lives when it’s not defined by contests anymore. Especially the prodigies who started young and never really had to grind or know another life. Feel like he is doing a good job of it. And encouraging the next generation.
Missed the whole thing. Too pre-occupied at the moment. Glad I didn’t miss epic cloudbreak.

In Olympic competition sailing, it is the total for 4 heats that decides the winner.
Average the comp surfing heats; between the extremes of offshore, cross & onshore waves, tides and sexes; (even Stevens) winner on highest points of surfing wins the title.
The pony club will still get great sponsors
Why would you want your kid to join the local boardriders club and be a contest surfer? Learn everything wrong about surfing from a bunch of total wankers in most cases.
Maybe that's just here in the south West but looking at these "groomed" pro kids / surfers , now living out what "could have been" for their parents a lot of the time is pretty sad.
Odds are better if you push your kid to play soccer or golf or womens afl if that's your goal as a parent ...

The "manufactued surfer" is an interesting topic. I witnessed the evolution of Mark Richards who could fit this category. Mark was an only child whose father Ray owned a surfshop in Newcastle. Mark was mentored from a young age by local surfing legend Robbie Wood (Nick Woods father). Ray would take Mark and a few mates surfing and critique Marks' surfing after every session. Ray purchased a unit at Rianbow Bay in Qld and the family would holiday there at every school holidays giving Mark access to some of the best waves in Australia from a young age. Then to Hawaii where Mark was introduced to some of the worlds best surfers (and shapers) and surfed the best waves Hawaii had to offer. What a way to kick off a career in surfing!

There was no implied judgement on parenting by calling Erin a manufactured pro surfer. Quite the contrary. If that is her "destiny" then best to get her as prepared as possible.
I often wonder why more parents/brands/team managers don't get these kids properly prepared for the CT.
Still spins me out people come onto the CT without developed skill sets.

I was thinking about this a bit over the weekend - i.e why rookies don't travel to waves ahead of contests to prepare for the near-sudden death of a CT showdown. A memory from webcast watching a few years back pushed itself to front of mind. To wit, a noted coach, still working, saying heat strategies are largely transferable between locations.
Got me wondering about the context: if he was being dismissive of the need for location training. Which may explain why some surfers make the CT without ever having surfed Teahupoo or Cloudbreak, or have a functioning backside barrel technique.
I get that some surfers (even top level) don't necessarily grow up around hollow waves, but the backside tuberiding thing baffles me. It's also not THAT hard? (in the context of the level that these surfers operate at).
If the average coastal plumber can pack a few nugs at his local beachies it seems inexcusable that a semi-professional isn't up to scratch in anything short of maxing tubes.
Have you tried finding a plumber or sparky living in an area with good waves nearby lately? They are packing more than just a few good nugs around anywhere with a few beach breaks I reckon, ...if they're not in Indo that is!

How lucky are these so-called manufactured surfers, when I was a grom parents saw surfing as wasting your life, I had to mow the lawn and wash the car before the old man would reluctantly take me down the coast.
Hopefully Australia will clean up in the finals if Trestles is 6' and we get a Hungry Jack and Pickles on a few whopper burgers.
