The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach: Day 1
The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach: Day 1
Opening day of Sunset finally wrapped at the halfway mark of the waiting period. The day was marked by the season's continuing confusing mix of swell angles and periods leading to a jumbled mess that you could call 4-10 foot. Not too big that it created any insurmountable fear factor in any of the competitors. We saw no refusals, no paddling for the horizon, looking the other way when sets stood up, or handing over priority before the sets came.
Good waves were at a premium, highlighted by the fact we only saw three excellent rides for the entire day. If you made it to double figures you had a reasonable chance of winning the heat. Sub-10 point heat totals won twice and were enough for advancing position most times. Two of the three wildcards - Kai Lenny and Keanu Asing - were sent home with cheques for last place finishes (USD $13,525). As were a hapless Ramzi Boukhiam and Callum Robson. Ramzi just had two absolute shockers and did not find a single wave with a clean corner to turn on. Callum was only slightly better. He found a couple of waves that should have been enough to squeak through but woke up with the wobbly boots on and could not back up a 5-point ride.
No surprises for John John, Ethan, and Jack Robinson. JJF claimed on the glass he was “itching to do a turn out there” but won by navigating some nasty little drainpipes across the Inside Sunset ledge. Ethan's full wrap cutback to snap was the nicest combo of the day and Jack looked totally comfortable on a 6'8½" Arakawa round pin that surfed effortlessly top to bottom.
Surprise came with Kelly Slater, who looked outmatched on paper by world number one and 2022 Sunset winner Barron Mamiya and Sunset ace Caio Ibelli. Halfway through the heat Kelly was leading with a pair of 3's and looking typically out of sorts with Sunset. He scraped into a flat piece of foamy water off the calvacade of swells hitting the reef and turned it into a technical tuberide, one of those classic Slater rides manufactured out of nothing. Followed it up with two beautiful hooking turns that cut hard against the grain, something very few were able to accomplish. His two 6-point rides weren't enough to get him on the glass for his first heat win since Sunset came back on Tour (Ibelli found two bombs) but it was enough to get through.
After describing a nightmare freesurf warm-up in a later presser - “I caught one wave in 45 minutes and it wasn't very good” - Kelly threw out the spectre of imminent retirement. “I'm questioning competing," he said, “my confidence isn't high." Like everything Kelly says when it comes to retirement, we'll believe it when we see it, not when he says it.
That habit of casual, even subconscious, deception has become so ingrained into the structure of the WSL it was almost inevitable that Filipe Toledo's stint in the booth would be marked by it. Inconsistent, illogical, and deeply confusing would be the only ways to describe it. Obviously fulfilling some obligation to chief sponsor Hurley, Toledo appeared and wore dark shades for the stint in the booth, which did not bolster the impression of trustworthiness.
Despite claiming he needed a rest (after a four-month break) and alluding to mental health struggles, Toledo opened the stint claiming, “I feel great, I feel super happy!” In another video released in Portuguese he was emphatic he was not “depressed or sad”.
OK.
At least Joe Turpel asked him about the calendar and about Pipe and Tahiti and how he felt about those events. Whether there was work to do.
Filipe smudged, saying, “everyone has strong points and weak points” and that he was going to “put in the work; put in the time to get better.”
But when..?
He had just told us he wanted a year “pressure free” to hang with the family and focus on his body and mental health.
Asked about trips, he said he had nothing planned and he just wanted to relax, surf, and enjoy the family. Although he did say as an afterthought that, “pretty soon I'll be flying around chasing waves”.
All those things can't be true. They are too contradictory. So I guess we'll see what happens.
The Olympics was not even mentioned, which was telling.
Can he come back after a year and pick off where he left off?
It depends on the calendar.
Champions have had time off. Notably Kelly. It took him three years to get back to form when he returned, and that was with a top-of-class Pipeline skill-set.
Medina has not looked the same since his sabbatical.
Good luck to Filipe. Whatever the reasons he has pulled out of this year's tour, and I suspect the obvious one is the most likely (enormous pressure after a very public humiliation at Pipe, compounding a reputation of other dubious showings at heavy lefts) he remains a dual World Champ and the best surfer in the world in a wide range of conditions.
Turning a bad surf around at Sunset is not easy. Few were able to manage it today. Medina's opening heat was marked by lethargy and a lack of focus. The ruthless machine-like competitor we used to know and love (or hate) is long gone. We get brilliance from Medina and we get heats of disinterest, much like a soccer game from Lionel Messi.
Brilliance returned in his elimination heat with Sammy Pupo and Keanu Asing. The Medina point of difference that we see at big Bells, J'Bay, and Mainbreak is a very deeply buried backhand bottom turn, as if he is on tracks - no wobble, no loss of speed up into the lip. It's the best turn in the Top 34 when he gets it going, as he did on a couple in that heat.
The “job” of a pro surfer is to make money from surfing. Which makes Ian Gentil a total mystery to me. Rookie of the year and currently World Number 3 and he remains, if we believe the blank sled, without a single sponsor. Does he not have a manager, a phone, email? Can he not find a Bonsoy, a Bailey's Ladders, or a travel sponsor like Trip a Deal as Callum Robson has? It's cool, and a bad look at the same time. Can the League not organise a sit down between Ian and Ziff where the main guy can give him a 15 minute business primer?
The mad messiness of last year continues seamlessly into this year.
A holiday during the best day of the waiting period. There's this thing called a calendar you normally check before locking in the dates.
We'll get some fun Sunset before this thing is through.
Essential viewing: Ethan's 8, Kelly's two turns, Jordy's deep wormhole for a 9.33.
The rest, immediately forgettable.

Water is wet, the sky is blue, Sunset is immediately forgettable.
This is not true Sprout.
Disagree. Do not find sunset even remotely appealing, as a surfer or a fan.
its agreeably a hard watch most of the time, it's too similar to Margies main break which I'd prefer given chance of running at Box or nth point as well..
I quite liked JJF's little stall/slash half way up the face into tube, as well.
I agree. it was impressive how quick he made the set up turn then immediately set a line into the barrel. It had such a degree of difficulty that seemed effortless to the casual eye.
Nice wrap of a jumbly mess FR.
To be honest, i felt how Sunset looked today!
One of those days!
Onto the next.
The Gentil thing is bizarre. The guy rips. Maybe not marketable?
I think also he comes from a rich family and just doesn’t need the money
Excellent write up
Good surfing
Average waves
Rubbish comments from Fil (and Kelly)
This is the best turn in the top 34.
Nothing against Medina’s backhand snap.
Steve was referring to Gabe's backhand bottom turn.
Either way, I disagree.
Best backhand bottom turn on tour I’ll pay.
Though Italo a few years ago would have gone close to matching.
That wave is one of the best ever surfed. Stunning.
And sorry if it sounded like a grumpy response; too much to do and not enough hours lately.
Not at all,
I didn't take it as grumpy.
Has a wave at Haleiwa ever been surfed better than that?
I’ll answer my own question - no it hasn’t.
He could have done something between the barrel and final turn.
Like a transition floater or something.
So there’s room for improvement
:D
Quality over quantity ld. Come on now.
That was sick....
Don’t just love the casual
‘Waves have been fun’
Gentil is making $180K this year if he doesn’t get through a single round at a single event.
He’s already came third in the first event, with commensurate prize money.
To travel the world for the CT to ten destinations would probably equate to about $60K in expenses. Hawaii is local for him. This is tax deductible for a pro surfer.
Gentil is already financially doing better than 90% of the Swellnet readership by turning up to exotic locations, being feted as a quasi celebrity and surfing for a living.
Of course he could consult Ziff as to the secret of his success- unfortunately for Gentil the “secret “ is to inherit such a vast sum of money and familial connections that your fortune assumes a self - perpetuating financial micro climate that you couldn’t possibly derail irresponsible of how many millions you throw at buying Waterman of the Year titles.
I find it refreshing and affirming that a true journeyman surfer plying his trade is so suitably rewarded. After a morning watching tweenage uber fuckwits of middling talent terrorising a lineup they considered “ their office” in the pursuit of career consisting of WQS early round eliminations, I couldn’t be more stoked that the concept of an elite living in surfing is going the way of the chimney sweep.
Sorry , Stu. I had a couple of Bintangs and assumed the sanctimonious forum twats wouldn’t be darkening your inbox with whines about surf related content.
Love your write ups Freeride.
PS…Haven’t watched a single heat this year.
Long waiting periods mean long stays at location. Leaving early means higher priced tickets or hang around after losing. Medical and physio, gym etc all add up. That $180k would get chewed up really quickly.
and if his career on the CT only last 3-4 years, it's back to the drawing board. Won't save much on just his winnings.
How do you figure $180k without making a heat?
Barron Mamiya needs an extra inch or two and maybe flatten his rocker a touch in the middle from his pipe board.
Did a couple nice turns but looked slow and lacking drive in transition.
I also think he prefers being an underdog rather than wearing yellow, for the time being at least.
My missus says I could do with an extra inch or two…just saying
sunset today as i usually think it is- last year it raised it’s own bar!!- hoping that it cleans up a bit over the next couple of days- surfline says it will- (but craig what do you see coming ??)
great wrap steve, - thought jordy’s wave was a cracker- he’s been steadily going down my list of admirables the last few years but hey, i could be back on his wagon
….and as usual gabe went the hardest imho
Jack Robbo's turn from the photo was very good, sorry to say so but Ethan's 8.00's cutback looked like Andy Irons in full flight, Miguel Pupo's two turn combo was pretty good, and Gentil got a left at the end of the heat and cut back into a small barrel and came out was cool.
Ewing definitely has those flashes of Andy, he’s so good to watch.
Way smoother than Andy
My top pick for men's outright. Looking vg
Was over at Straddy in November and watched a few waves of EE. Smoothest roundhouse cutty going in 2 foot waves that translated to Sunset.
Love that kind of surfing, smooth as....
Sunset belongs in the past. What a boring comp
I have said it before. I wish wsl had 2 wildcard entry for us civilians on each event. Would really show how good these men are. I can surf but if I dropped onto one of those wave's in yesterday's condition I would have tank slapped all the way down the face and pancake splat at the bottom. Looked so tough to surf
So their was no food poisoning? It’s strictly a mental game with heavy water, barreling reef breaks. Ok fine. Everyone has a weakness albeit odd for the ‘worlds best surfer’. If he said my heavy water game ain’t up to scratch, I’m having a yr off. I’m sure the scrutiny wouldn’t have been as bad. What a wanker.
Nothing was clear in the booth.
Long time on tour,
Forced by parents to surf bled out
Wants to take the kids to school.
Might be setting up businesses
Might be gunning for a green card / citizenship
No questions for Fil about the Olympics? A bit strange but as FR alluded to was to be expected from the WSL these days.
He said he was going to focus on it in his last spiel after the break announcement.
I can't see him pulling out of the Olympics without copping a pizzling like he did after Pipe.
Time will tell I suppose.
Tik Tok Fil. Tik Tok.
I wish you covered mtb. Maybe start with Hardline in Tassie? Please?
Remy Morton is in Hardline and his dad shapes Metal Surfboards. Good place to start, Remy is kind of the Dane Reynolds of MTB. You could watch/ rewatch the broadcast with Jim Morton and do an interview.
Wishful thinking I know, but racing coverage is so shallow, even with the vloggers. It's entertaining to watch but that's about it.
MTB?
Mountain Bike.
So a full day of surfing - 16 heats to eliminate only 4 surfers, 2 of which don’t count anyway because they are wildcards. Madness. Here is alternative draw/system
First round (3 person heats)
1st place goes through to round of 16, 2nd place gets a second chance, 3rd place you are out. That way it means something to come first and it coats to come last.
Second round (3 person heats)
1st place goes through to round of 16, ,2nd and 3rd place are out.
So then day 2 you are straight into the round of 16
I’d also consider having 1hr competitor only warm up sessions each day. That would make great viewing. I cant think of another sport in the world that has to practice with everyday punters in a warm
Up.
Drama sells. So what if a world number one is eliminated in the first round. They get another chance in the next event. The warm up sessions could be very popular to watch. The second round has a real urgency to it. Round one and two progression will lift.
Medina needs charlie back in his corner...............maybe ......but seems over the pro thing ...been there done that.
Give me Bells any day.
Those heats look like hard work.
Especially the water camera men in just Flippers
How fit are those guys !
PS: love the carnage show of Sunset
Surprised by people finding Sunset boring. For me it is a special arena that challenges the surfers like no other.
Perhaps it comes from growing up seeing unfathomable photos of huge drops on outside West peaks, but I always enjoy the chaos. Sure, the photos only tell the story of a magic moment, not how much luck and effort went into it. But it certainly tests the guys' watercraft abilities. Although having since experienced it I can understand the ambivalence.
From the competitors' viewpoint it is a lottery and not enjoyable as a Championship venue, so maybe it should be a specialty event like The Eddie ...but I'd be sad see the top guys not surf it.
...And go the WA boys!! Only place with a similarly immense playing field.
is anyone else finding Slaters rhetoric boring?
…..i just cant stand it when he makes excuse after excuse. Zero acknowledgment of how good people who are beating him are surfing. Commentators also forget he is only in these event because of media popularity. He technically fallen off tour multiple times now….
he will always be the GOAT but I am embarrassed for him. needs to move on and WSL ned to let him go
Should have gone out on top after the 2022 Pipe Masters.
Finally, photographic evidence of Robbo's extra long ghost toes
