Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Invitees Announced
HONOLULU, Hawaii (Tuesday, November 5, 2013) - The 29th annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, the original one-day big wave invitational surfing event that requires waves measuring in excess of 20 feet, is excited to announce the list of 2013/14 Invitees and Alternates. The holding period for the event begins on December 1, 2013, and concludes on February 28, 2014. The official Opening Ceremony with the Aikau Family will be held on Thursday, December 5th, 3pm, at Waimea Bay.
After opening the selection process up to peer polling for another year, there has been much movement on the Alternate list, but only one newcomer to the Invitee list: the North Shore’s own Aaron Gold, 31. A dedicated father, quiet charger and shaper of his own big wave ‘guns’, Gold is precisely the kind of surfer who Eddie would have hand-picked.
Aaron has been riding The Bay since he was around 13 years of age, but only emerged on the international scene during the past two years. Memorable performances at venues like Jaws and Cortes have been captured by the media, though many times with Aaron only being recognized as an “Unidentified” surfer.
Driven purely by a love for riding big waves, with no sponsors to his name, Aaron Gold will no longer go unrecognized.
“It’s hard to put into words,” said an elated Gold when hearing of his Invitation. “My whole life, growing up as a kid here in Hawaii, that’s the ultimate prize, to be invited to the Eddie. When you get that invite, it’s like you’ve accomplished what you set out for. Crazy dream. Dream come true for sure.
“I paddled out (Waimea) the first time when I was about 12 or 13. I was riding like a 7’0″ and it was the biggest board in the world to me. I just got annihilated. Just got blown up and thought I was going to die, and from that point it turned me to really want to surf big waves. That started my love for (Waimea) and it’s really a special place for me.
“To me, (Eddie) is somebody that did it because he loved it… At that time it wasn’t about money or anything else. That’s where his peaceful place was and that’s what he loved to do. Between that and his family – always prioritizing those things – to me that’s what it’s about. If at the end of the day you can influence lives in the next generation, I’d be so blessed to be able to do that.”
The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau has only been held a total of eight times, most recently on December 8, 2009. California’s Greg Long took the honor that year.

Looks like Jeff Rowley didn't get his invite after all.
Karma for exploiting all those breaks down South.......
ho hum
The Grand Muftis of Swellnet have hereby issued a Fatwah: anymore contentious posts pertaining to Jeff Rowley, Down South, photo exploitation or similar will be deleted. The voices of a few are drowning out the voices of the many.
Wow now thats a list of big wave riders ,if yo ever get a chance to go to the opening ceremony do it,its one of the more special days you will experience on land.
Its respect central...amazing gathering, and ya can get to chat to just about anybody, even Kelly hangs for the day ceremony and the nte feed and entertainment...
Hawaii Aloha at its most powerful......congrats to all the invitees and alternates...and congrats to Mark Mathews getting on the alternates list..
Watched the opening ceremony back in 2000 (it also ran that year with RCJ winning). It was a fairly low key affair, not on the scale the opening ceremony is now. The Bay was only small and when the invitees paddled out Michael Ho took his then-young son, Mason, out with him.
Coming in a set broke across the back of Pinballs and a few people lost their boards, Mason being one of them. Michael rescued him and they both got bounced along the rocks down the side of the Bay. For a few minutes it was a heavy scene.
Doesn't seemt to be any lingering effects though: Mason is first alternate and yesterday won at Sunset.
Shame Laurie Towner was taken off the alternates list. Love watching him surf in the big stuff
too true goofy... Laurie...is such a great waterman and also a very nice human being......
Not even shawn dollar gets in there and hes the world record holder, its a good list of legends though
@ caml, just curious have you surfed the north shore ? if so what did you think.
Back in 97" had enough $ to go there and surfed good 80 day stint mostly sunset. Liked it n had some sesh at sunset. Wished I could hav gone back many more times . But didnt, nowadays maybe rather go to ire or europe if had the $.
November 1990
Stayed at Mark Foos block of units at Waimea Bay.
Every night there was a party in one of the units. There were pro surfers, groupies, Scandinavian tourists and bourbon was $8 a bottle.
I went there fit, strong and ready to surf anything. I could walk to Log Cabins.
I left a month later. Almost an alcoholic, partied way too hard and shagged my brains out. Almost needed a skin graft......
The best time of my entire life.........
Welcome to the North Shore!
Heaven........
That's funny likeminds, I stayed thereat the cabins in 90 maybe 91, but seen it from a different perspective. I had been staying there and all was fine swell came up came back to the cabins surfed out to find 3 aussie girls on the fist night out from oz on a round the world jaunt, had a beer with them and they went out for dinner, I was wasted and crashed looking forward to a dawn paddle out at sunset.
The girls came back at 11 ish with some new friends about 10 of them all blokes, eventually I gave up trying to sleep and and got a beer, got talking to a bloke staying next door who said they had a room next door for half the price of the cabin, I was welcome to stay as long as didn't break there most important rule. No partys, if you want to party go next door to Foo's!!
Likeminds I'm guessing that's the backpackers that his sister now owns? I'm heading over there at the end of December for the first time and staying there. Haha what a pissa! Thanks for the heads up.. How long does it take to ride a pushy from there to sunset etc?
Hi Goofyfoot.
Yes it is Backapckers Vacation Inn
http://backpackershawaii.com/accomodations/plantation-village/
It is basically a block of units. So each night there was some sort of a party in one of them.
Ok yes it was 1990, but I am sure there must be some action going on there.
And our dollar is good so renting a 2nd hand car is cheap so don't worry about a pushbike.
Big Guns are dirt cheap too......
If you are a bit wasted from a big night you can hop over the road for a dip in Waimea's shorebreak.
That will wake you up.......lol
Take me!
@GF,
North Shore Backpackers is now run by Mark Foo's sister, SharLyn. There're three different sections: the Pit, which is under the office; the cabins, which are two doors up; and the slightly more upmarket cabins, which are across the road next to Three Tables Beach.
Try and get a car if you can. Just keep your ear to the ground for any sales going or look around on the noticeboards. Short of that just buy a pushy, again look on the noticeboards or go into town and buy one from a department store (they're pretty cheap). Don't forget a lock - a very solid one.
It takes about 15 minutes to ride from backpackers to Sunset. You can do it with a big gun, but your arm will be sore - there's another reason to get a car. The great thing about backpackers is if the Bay fires up you're right next door to Ground Zero.
Good luck.
Cheers Stu and likeminds.
Yeah I'm staying in the "pit". Sounds like fun! Pretty happy to just ride a pushy and cruise, but if I get over it ill look at getting a car.
I'm hoping the Eddie runs while I'm there, fingers crossed!
Hopefully there's still a few of those Scandinavians getting around!
Now I'm off to practice holding my breath for when I get caught inside... Yewww
Look forward to seeing how your 16 day forecast for North Shore goes when im over there, actually maybe I don't wanna know...
Wonder how Flores feels about being the sponsors pick amongst a pack of hard proven hellmen?
Not that he don't have talent dripping off him.
Honolulu newspaper the star advertiser is reporting 2 aussie surfers have gone missing at laniekia and a san diego surfer missing feared drowned at outside alligators,
our own big ben Wilkinson was out there at the time and said the surfer copped 6 or 8 set waves on the head.
