SA State Titles Round 1 - Huge Success At Yorkes

(Yorke Peninsula, Innes National Park – Monday 14th March 2011): The first round of the Toyota Surfing state titles was completed in epic surf on the Yorke Peninsula today, with surfers being greeted with a large and perfect Autumn swell the entire weekend.

Contest director Luke Horlin-Smith used his expert knowledge of the Yorke Peninsula to select the best possible locations for the two days of surfing.

The combination of the states best surfers and pumping waves set the scene for a great competition.

Day one was held at the wave affectionately know as "Rockpools".

The right hand wave which breaks over sand and reef saw waves in the 1.0 to 2.0 metre mark throughout the day.

Georgie Thomas (Middleton) who competed in both the open womens and u18s was one of the standout surfers for the weekend.

Georgie placed 1st in the open womens event and showed her maturity as a surfer selecting the best waves and using a variety of innovative maneuvers.

"I want to keep giving it my best shot in the opens and try and take out the under 18 title also".

With performances like this Georgie is certainly on her way to achieving her surfing goals.

Georgie (16) is a bright star for junior surfing in South Australia and will surely be snapped up by a major sponsor in the near future.

Local surfer Luke Sykora was also impressive on day one of competition. With a hard fought final Luke displayed some power surfing and narrowly took the final out over Josh Lindsay.

One of the major highlights for the day was the surfing of Mack Baddack (16) who ripped the oversized walls of water to pieces.

The power in his turns and his vertical attack on the lip was unrivalled through out the day. Mack's fantastic surfing was rewarded with a first place in the under 18 boys.

Day 2 of the competition was held at the the a-frame reef break at Pondalowie Bay.

Fun 1 to 1.5 metre running walls were the flavour of the day for competitors.

Winds improved all day to near perfect conditions for the final rounds of competition.

Standout performances for the day came from surfers Khai Adams, Teale Vanner, David Steele and Georgie Thomas.

The major drawcard for the day was the open mens competition and the level of surfing was through the roof.

Risking so much with each turn, throwing buckets of spray, Khai Adam's looked like the surfer to beat right from the start.

Contest director Luke Horlin-Smith had this to say about Khai's surfing, "Some of his moves were of national, if not international standard"

The final of the open mens however saw the talented Teale Vanner take it to Khai, Brett Edwards and David Steele.

Teale had the edge on the others with his competitive knowledge in the at times, inconsistent waves at Pondalowie Bay.

Teale made the most of each wave, picking off the better waves unleashing his radical array of maneuvers.

Surfing South Australia contest director, Luke Horlin-Smith was thirilled with the overall success of the Toyota State surfing titles

"The ocean conditions were perfect and challenging, in particular day one at Rockpools" said Luke.

"It was a real joining together of the South Australian surfing community, more than just a surfing contest.

"With surfers like Teale Vanner who is really committed to supporting local events in between world travels he is providing a really positive role model for many of the juniors".

Round two of the South Australian surfing state titles will take place on the Fleurieu Peninsula in April.
