Have to say i thought that was a bit of a weird thing to say, id say the week the first fleet got to OZ about the 20th onwards it would have been high spirits like thank fuck we are finally here...land i love land.

But yeah i guess his point was hundreds of poor fuckers had been taken from their home land often for petty crimes and taken to the other side of the world to what they saw as this dry arid place, not to mention would have sucked being stuck on boat for 250 days with hundreds of others, where quite a few died.

Poor fuckers surprised there is no convict ancestor lefties these days trying to claim they suffer intergenerational trauma and trying to get compensation for being taken from their homeland and dumped here for their petty crimes...its 2021 though still could happen.

Yep, this was all a result of the Enclosure Acts, the process where common land became titled land, the people were kicked off it and a living became precarious, and then they stole a pheasant on their former commons land.

The land was used for sheep grazing, ownership was concentrated you know where.

Maybe the date of those acts should be Australia Day. Cos it set the ball in motion.

Have sat and listened to the accounts of that conflict from one of the combatants on the Serbian side: their conclusion on the whole Balkan war was similar to that of Smedley Butler. If ethnic groups are revved up against each other results can mimic this terrible time. Who's doing the revving?

What i love about straya day....the fact it's existence rocks the very core of 'Australian' history on it's commemoration of an invasion it still denies. The way it unwittingly teaches a new generation about the truth, just by the fact the indigenous crew have stood strong, held their heads high and stuck to the moral high ground regardless of the political and media rhetoric over the years. Saluting the indigenous legends of this country.

The author answers his own question in the article. It’s celebration of the start of a new nation away from the class oppression of the crown.

“ The convicts were wrenched from homeland, community and family, in most cases for theft. Their punishment was designed as a deterrent against future transgression.”

That’s worth celebrating. New beginnings in a new land. Maybe you don’t understand cause your parents came out voluntarily instead of being related to the dispossessed and dislocated victims of the crown as much as any blackfellas - as was the case for those convicts sentenced to purgatory at the ends of the known world ?

Not a fashionable statement to utter these days but no less true .

Blowin's picture
Blowin's picture
Blowin Monday, 25 Jan 2021 at 7:52pm

Bluediamond...I agree that an intrinsic component of Australia these days is the recognition of past injustices to the blackfellas. It’s a bit disingenuous to suggest that no one is having the conversation about how modern Australia was founded.

I personally reckon we should maintain the date but treat it in the manner of ANZAC day. Perhaps a dawn service of reflection and memorial for those ill treaten and downtrodden on the path towards the community we now live in and have the day morph into a celebration of what we have accomplished together and the hope for continuous improvement into the future.

Let’s have January 26th recognise both sides of the coin.

Some mourn and some celebrate and we should really feel and appreciate the spirit of both if we are to move forwards as a single sovereign people.

Odds on your parents immigrated voluntarily from the UK post WW2 and so you can’t really comment on the stories and feelings of those whose relatives didn’t enjoy the same fortuitous exit from their former homeland.

False equivalency is believing the offspring of ten pound Poms is any more entitled to comment on the attitudes held by descendants of those transported against their will than those descendants of convicts can opine about the experiences of the descendants of ill treated blackfellas.

Whatever bloke.....happy Australia Day.

Your all whinging about Australia Day I cant understand why. There are
countries all over the world at one time or another have been invaded and
taken over it was the way of the world back then. I dont know of any other
country that has given so much to the original owners and tried so hard to
accommodate them. If your so pissed off by all this return to your ancestors
country put up or shut up.China are gearing up for invasion of Australia see
how well they treat us or the aboriginals.
Australia Day enjoy it for what it is and be grateful we live here.
Im also fully aware its used as excuse for drunken yobbo ugly

Sorry. Resoectfully disagree there evosurfer. Walk a mile in the shoes of any indigenous Australian before you consider knowing all there is to know. Its so easy to use the arguments of it happened too long ago to care. The problem is the frameworks and structures put in place back in the day have not evolved nor has the thinking of us, the new inhabitants. Close the gap?? Assimilation?? This is still what we demand of those whose country was stolen from them.
When u say go back to the country you came from if you don't like it. Well its not about not liking things. Its about morally righting historical injustices we carry to the now. How about instead of that line, we instead allow indigenous Australians to speak...be heard...and to actually listen. What would a minimum 50% indigenous political system, media control, real estate, social system look like? Would you accept that as a minimum? If not, there in lies the massive problem. White man rule.

Nobody owns the country because God does. We are all just passing through and nobody really owns anything even though we all pretend we do.. As global population grows even more will pass through.
All I see is our pollies trying to help people who were here earlier than others adapt to modern life and I think they are doing their best, giving lots of opportunities to those who want them. Labor / greens seem to think it political advantage to keep stirring the hate. Looking behind and living in the past is a recipe for disaster. Passing your grudges down through the generations poisons your kids futures. Our current political and justice system is good for everyone even though its not perfect. We live in a very fair country where everyone can get help to live their dream if they have one and acknowledge their heritage if they want to.
Will changing dates make any difference to some people who will never move on?..
I doubt it and if so make Aus day the 27TH Jan...I'm easy and I'm sure everyone else is too.

Happy Australia day

Some fun facts:

Australia day has been on the 26th Jan in all states and territories except NSW since 1935 (getting close to 100 years of history)

And only reason it wasn't called Australia day in NSW until 1946 is because it was known there as anniversary day before that first landing day or foundation day, which dates back to 1838

The date also has significance in that in 1838 it also became Australias first public holiday (NSW only)

https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/australia/australia-day

An another important aspect very rarely given any media attention is:

On the 26th of January 1949, the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 was enacted.

This was the date where we truly became Australians in our own right

Before 1949, any non indigenous person born or naturalised (made a citizen) in Australia was a British subject.
Before 1949 people travelling overseas were issued with British passports.

However from that date onwards anyone already here or born here was automatically an Australian citizen and given an Australian passport if they wished to travel.

https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/citizenship-act

IMHO if there is ever any compromise with the changing of the date, it should be for public holiday reasons only and make it back to a floating holiday either the Monday or Friday closest to the 26th, as yeah when the 26th falls on a day like this year a Tuesday, most people also take the Monday a holiday, so i guess this causes issues for employers etc

But changing the date of the holiday doesn't actually change the date of Australia day, a point some people don't seem to understand.

Hey D Rex.
Would love to hear your argument as to why this isn't fair and just. Feel free to put it out there and give some legitimate reasons why the people who had their country stolen from them don't actually deserve at least to have 50 percent control of it in every aspect.
And Optomist, i'm not religious so that argument doesn't stack up from the start for me.
But glad this convo is being had and appreciate everyone putting their thoughts in. This problem won't go away and working against each other isn't going to help so putting our heads together and discussing it, whether we feel right or wrong, is a good thing. So cheers to all.
Here's some Australia day light reading for anyone who want's a basic understanding of White fella/black fella relatiion's from this fateful day.
http://www.jaconline.com.au/humanitiesalive/ha3/downloads/HA3_01.pdf
Lastly, interesting hearing Cook's first observations of the Aboriginal people on the newly found land...
As Captain Cook wrote
in his journal about those he observed in 1770: ‘… in reality they
are far more happier than we Europeans … In short they seemed to
set no value upon anything we gave them, nor would they part with
anything of their own for one article we could offer them’
There's something to think about.

Optimist lightly dismisses a culture that predates the time his god is claimed to have walked the earth by at least 40,000 years.

No surprises there, missionaries have been doing the same the world over since religious leaders saw the profit to be had in calling their god the one true god.
