Offshore windfarm hazards.
I managed this rig for a few years while she was in Brunei. It was sold last year to a Chinese Wind Farm Construction company.
2 Days ago it fell over on location with 65 men on board - 4 still missing....
One of the legs punched through the harder sea bed crust to softer clay which could not support the rigs weight.....$60 Mill going, going, gone.....

Read today that on Monday the Australian Institute of Marine Science released their annual stats on the Great Barrier Reef . Those worried that Global Warming is hurting the reef will be thrilled to hear that reef coverage is at RECORD highs and that farm pesticides could not be recorded by their their very sensitive instruments .

Saw that: is it being reported in main stream media???

Surely it's the reason why it has been decided not list it as in danger or under threat or whatever, hard to do that when recent science doesn't support the view.

"AIMS list the northern, central and southern regions as having 27%, 26% and 39% coral cover respectively. Normalising this for the number of reefs surveyed in each section (54, 53 and 30 reefs respectively), this produces a total average coral cover for the GBR of 28%.

This is a record high value,"

And this is after some major bleaching events in the last 5 years.

I guess we see what we want to see. Good news for the past reporting period, while noting this recovery has been during a period of low levels of disturbance. They also state that it is not necessarily going to stay that way because "the prognosis for the future disturbance regime under climate change is one of increasingly frequent and longer lasting marine heatwaves and a greater proportion of severe tropical cyclones."

They would say that to ensure that their funding would not be reduced . Official ( BOM ) records show that cyclones has substantially reduced in the last 40 years ( not sure why ) which may have reduced run off and reduced farm pesticides . We have been told for decades that the world was in danger of global warming but at the moment the reef is doing well . The UNESCO fiasco was political ( China ) imo and great to have this empirical evidence so we can tell them to F Off next year . I saw the video re Wikipedia a while ago and it reinforced my belief that the WEF are tyrants and trying to get the world to do the not so Great Reset .

Megzee - it's all fun & games until the oil rig falls over. Far out! Would you think this is unfortunate positioning, or something shifting and dooming them? Hope the crew is OK.

Superfreak - listening to the Wiki interview now. It really does seem that so many info sources have been hijacked by the democrat 'liberal' viewpoint and it really does them a disservice, because everyday people will stop using these sources. Or call shit on it, like we do here with 'snopes'. Combined with all the social media censorship, it creates a niche for media viewpoints from other perspectives which is a great gift of opportunity if you think about it. Kudos to Swellnet forums for remaining open and allowing differing viewpoints.

G'day VJ......4 men lost.....62 survivors........Rig down flooded and sank 2 days ago after buoyancy [trapped air ] lost the battle....
As a quick technical explanation.....These type of units, move on to a location.
All seabed soil data , bathymetric, metocean, studies are completed, by a [reputable] 3rd party engineering company/ warranty provider, wherein, the rig owners are issued with a Site Specific Assessment/ Leg Penetration Analysis and Location Approval cert. All 3 docs satisfy the Rig Insurance underwriters requirements. before they move onto a determined location.

Here's the tricky part mate.......As the unit lowers it's legs to contact point of the seabed, there is a certain amount of "natural" penetration due to the weight of the legs. About 800-1000 MT each

Once this settlement occurs, they fill ballast tanks around the hull area of each leg and begin a pre-load sequence, which basically simulates the weight of the rig, prior to jacking it above the sea surface. In essence, the unit should have no more penetration, thus meeting the SSA, and Leg Penetration Analysis stipulations.

If a layer of sand, which is the most "trustable" seabed surface, is over a sub layer of Clay, which is the most "untrustworthy", an uncontrollable "punch through will/ can occur, and the rig will loose all stability values, fall over, and suffer catastrophic damage.......

Down flooding occurs, when they do not observe the water tight integrity procedures [ by leaving weather deck watertight doors and hatches open and sea water uncontrollably floods voids and machinery spaces, thus counter-acting natural buoyancy....ending in total loss.......and loss of men's life...

Unfortunately, this is the second such incident this year....In this neck of the woods...
Hope I didn't bore anyone....

Not boring at all - fascinating. It seems a very thorough process. Can I assume they do some seafloor ultrasonics (Bro worked in this on land) - ie, hey this layer is sand, but the reading below it is clay, so can't go here?

Watertight doors not being closed I am familiar with from the history nerd stuff. (Eg Titanic's sister ship Britannic)

When I did shipboard safety I did the 4m jump into water in a drysuit (felt like a giant crayfish) - can't imagine having a listing rig, hardly any time to prepare then going for a much larger jump. Jumped 15m into water when I was 15 up in the gorges in WA, that was rad, I counted as I went down, one two three, four.....

RIP to those lost.

@vj , it’s hard finding truth these days and fact checking truth is even harder when the fact checkers are compromised. There has been discussion around Dr.Malone with several sources claiming he is not a pioneer or inventor of mRNA. I have seen some articles stating it first started in 1961 and one that said it was first stumbled upon in 1947 . This next link claims to be fact checking and the second link is from Dr Malone’s wife . Deciding which one is the truth is the hard bit . Dr Malone is raising concerns over the mRNA vaccines and he himself has been fully vaccinated with moderna ,none the less he is coping a-lot of flak and podcasts he’s appeared in are discredited because of the media push against him. https://www.logically.ai/articles/who-is-dr.-robert-malone?hs_amp=true. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/history-how-mrna-vaccines-were-discovered... https://www.linkedin.com/in/rwmalonemd

"Not boring at all - fascinating. It seems a very thorough process."
VJ, it is a full on information gathering process to put a rig on any location.....
All offshore sites, whether it be oil. gas, wind turbine or piling require drilling soil bore sampling, which means a contracting company will come in and take a soil core sample, and send it off for evaluation.
To add to the nerd factor, most "used" sites require Side Scan Sonar imaging and Diver seabed surveys......all to assume there are no previous rig leg footprints, debris or pipelines.....before you lower the legs...
Reason sand is the friendly one is because it easily displaces water, whereas clay retains moisture and is unpredictable under pressure,,,,,
Obviously it is a fine line when it comes to modelling a 12,000 ton rig and how it will react to the seabed.
I have been on rigs where the legs final pre-load settlement is 25-30 meters into the seabed.......Pulling the buggers out after a year on site is another story....
Have you heard that the Titanic and the Olympic [sister ship] identities were swapped after the Olympic suffered irreparable damage during sea trials? Insurance was unclaimable so they supposedly did the old swaparoony.....
At least this conspiracy theory is not COVID related........I think?

Hi Megzee, thanks for more info, appreciated and it is all of interest though I think I'd be useless in that field!
Re: Titanic and Olympic - I'm of the view that they weren't swapped, as after Olympic collided with the cruiser HMS Hawke and went in for repairs, she was alongside Titanic. They did swap the portside propellor, however: Titanic gave hers to Olympic, which had been damaged.

They were alongside together from March 2, 1912 to March 7, 1912 in Belfast. My feeling is that this 5 days were insufficient time to swap out all the interior trim differences (remodelled B deck, Cafe Parisien) between the two. If they had just swapped, passengers would have noticed.

One controversial and fascinating Titanic piece of history - and a potential contribution to her sinking - is a coal fire in the bunker near the number 4/5 bulkhead. This was unknown of until recently, and is exactly where the iceberg hit. It would have weakened the steel there.

All good VJ.....I often find the best crew to have on deck and be at sea with were surfers......because of good ocean, weather, instincts.......Plus the ability to deal with sudden situations that arise.....Pretty sure you'd be ok in the offshore game mate.....
Yep, the Titanic theory you put forward certainly has a lot of credibility...Will we ever know...
Here's another one for a rainy day...
A guy named Tommy Thompson, pulled in a heap of investors to finance the search of the S.S Central America which sank in 1857 carrying a shit load of gold.....amongst other things.. In 1988, he found the elusive wreck site, developed the first workable ROV and retrieved the $$$$$$$$ millions in gold...
Then scarped with his girlfriend .....leaving his friends and investors.....a little bit annoyed.....
Great story of knowledge, determination with a fair dose of greed thrown in....

Udo I saw this on 7.30 on the ABC tonight and thought to myself how the hell we got to this point in our political landscape where our lives are governed by a bunch of lying hypocritical c###s. What's worse is they think this type of behaviour is normal. I'm not politically motivated and to be honest have always leaned on the liberal side of things. But the day Scott Morrison and his merry bunch of thieves get sent packing will be a good day in this country's history.

"Unlike the feathered birds they shared the sky with, pterosaurs stayed aloft on membrane wings stretched between their fingers.

“It wasn’t built to eat broccoli,” Richards tells Royce Kurmelovs of the Guardian. “It would have been a fearsome sight.”

Pterosaurs are particularly intriguing because they were the first vertebrates to master flight, soaring above their dinosaur cousins on the ground. Some pterosaurs existed as recently as 66 million years ago, but others date as far as 250 million years ago. This discovery marks the third species of anhanguerian pterosaur known to science, all of which come from western Queensland."

Basically all he has to do is not be Trump; ie present a calm and reasonable face to the nation and the world. In this respect he has been wildly successful.

At any rate other than being able to apply a limited number of executive actions, and veto legislation, the President doesn't have much power to directly affect policy. That power lies with the Senate and Congress,
