What's what?
you got it. yeah, there is no doubt a name for the fallacy as well...
the argument is an inductive argument based on causal reasoning.
looks like the problem lies not with the sample, but with (1)the control group (people who didn't practice positive thinking) and (2) with establishing the inference to the best explantion (that causation is the best explanation for the supposed correlation found in the sample group.
...my experience with postive thinking. every year honi soit (the sydney uni newspaper) gives away two tickets to the film festival. one year, i knew that i would win it. so i went to the drawing at the honi soit offices. just me and two editors. they give the barrel a spin and pick out an entry... and call out my name...i say "thank you" and put my hand out for the ticket. they look at each in disbelief and check the barrel to see if i've stuffed the thing with only my name.
TBB recently I came across an article that showed an alzheimers brain and compared it with a healthy one. The alzheimers brain was collapsed in on itself, the structural support of - cholesterol - missing. Eggs away...
We are 80% water, but what of the other 20%? Dr Weston Price would say that part is serviced by 'fat soluble activators'. Buttermilk, oysters, eggs, whatever people could get their hands on.
Positive thinking. Measured success and reasonable expectation that it can be carried forward into the future is worth following with conviction.
People on statins for high cholesterol have early onset Alzheimer's at a way higher rate than the general pop
Actually inzider existing data suggest that, if anything, statins reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. If you disagree please link to your sources.
I agree positive thinking is a more powerful thing than many give credit (without getting all new age)
But I'm baffled that Crypto Knight considers himself a positive thinker?
Although he has been more well behaved of late and i actually liked his story about a page back where he ate lots of eggs, to me he generally comes across as extremely negative and seems to go to quite some effort to be negative, which can't be good or healthy for body or mind.
.......he's only negative about the rest of us indo.
Mmmm. I like it!! I've bonded the swillnuts!! Again!! In a nutshell!!!?
Sometimes the truth hurts. Love hurts.
Say I walk into the gym, and I see the world's worst deadlift about to go down, along with the practitioner. And that's not uncommon. I literally carried one, a local surfer, out to his car in agony only weeks ago, after having warned him and his clueless side kicks many times, what the inevitable was, if they didn't change what they were doing. The easy thing would be to not say a thing. Most do, in my experience. The popular thing would be to join in the clueless, useless squwarking. In a nutshell. So inevitable, off work, no income, no surfing, fucked. Then, pleading with me to rehab him. I have the experience, results, and extensive non injury client record to be 100% sure of what I say, in that scenario. The truth is, I am obliged to, if I care remotely about the Truth, and respect that person. Some listen, some don't, but I have done my part.
Athletes have way less ego than the general public. They love finding out what needs correcting, they hire coaches to point out any deviance from correct procedures, and quickly address them. The public know shit. Lots of shit. They stomp up and down, injuries inflaming, weaknesses exhausting them. They even rise up in their high chairs bleating way too hard!!! Some to the grave, some overcome the ego, surrender it, and presto, results!!! A miracle!!! Another reference!!! Swillnuts hate the stinkin', foul, evil truth in that, in a nutshell.
If I don't have proven expertise or experience in a subject, I won't offer comments, or advice. I sat in the ocean many, many times with a legend who ruled on his MR twinnies, in slabs of major consequence. All who saw him then marveled at his performance. Prominent board makers offered him sponsorships. He was so careful, so particular, so fanatical about his equipment. You had to be in those waves. So, in his prime, when he went his hardest, he meticulously chose the MR twinnie. Richo won that tube riding comp. On his twinnie, 'the best board ever in the barrel.' Against all the stars on their 'modern' thrusters. He saw his twinnie as a major advantage. MR, the legendary shaper, designer, and surfer stated that twinnies work best in heavy, hollow waves. Windang legend, John Batcheldor RIP, blew the locals away at big, raw pipe (Hawaii), on his little twinnie. The locals praised him in the highest light. There were sick photos too. Some hate the truth of that with a stinkin', foul, squwarkin' vengeance. Some are just plain ignorant.
So they sqwark with authority how shit twinnies are in the barrel and grunt. Never wondering what it was, that produced the reslult. Trite 'luck' they reckon. Just like the eggs scenario, never opening their mind, beyond their ego. The Truth, its part of the deal. Way more important than 'positive' thinking. Its the foundation. The Source. The enabler. The unchanging characteristic of That.
Anyone who trades or has traded stock markets etc, for a living, as their sole source of income, knows when some one is dribbling about it. The advice will be the same, as it is crucial to any trade. Both the profit and loss trades. Because there are both. Its part of successful trading. Handling both scenarios successfully, is integral to successful trading for a living. Capital management, the foundational skill. It dictates position size, it defines the exact loss limit, it protects and maximizes profit. It ensures the ability to be able to always trade when the sought, identified situation arises. And draw a wage. And satisfy the taxman. Next comes understanding price action, the representation of buying and selling participants behaviour, to find the most probable rewarding, least risky opportunities, and to define when to enter those opportunities. The rest is just add ons to the above. When you can do that extremely competently you can rejoice in leveraged instruments. You can sleep at night. You can be ruthlessly clinical much easier. Anyone saying otherwise is talking shit. I would be lying, negative and disrespectful to the Truth to say otherwise.
Some love their story to death, more than their Self, no matter what. Even when the crane is trying to hoist them out of the house. Even when the surgeon's saw is buzzing! Even when the Truth stares them in the face.
Its a Big Wednesday sentimental, comradery, swillnut club bonding scene, on Bigger Thursday!!! Its positively deluxe!!! In a nutshell!!!
Big Fursthday... justht annuvver sthtinky day in ver highchaiwr... wiv my stheekwet fwenths!!! Pweath wet me go hawrd... I pwomisth I wown't go too hawrd but!!!
Yep. Luv hurts. If you hate the Truth.
I love surfing. Around 40 years ago, but a have a go at him, that ledge, on that little twinnie. Not a fuckin' 'trainin wheel' in sight!!!
That stinkin' foul, evil, mother fuckin' good for nuthin' twinnie... that in a nutshell, those official surfee officials hate with a positively stinkin' lousy vengeance!!?!>!
Somebody's gotta lift the elephants. Bring 'em into the room. I can lift 'em, got no injuries, no back braces, so here's another one. Positively deluxe!!!

Luv ya work Doc Tanzi and co... even if its old news!
Depends which study you read blindboy
There is study for everyone's wanted answer.
Dr Purlmutter is my favourite celebrity doctor
Yeah true Blindboy i guess it's about how a person perceives themselves, they could be constantly negative to others while believing totally in themselves and remaining focussed and positive on their on life, i guess it's a common thing really, putting others down to paint themselves in a better light, creating positive energy from giving out negative energy.
While for others we try to avoid this behaviour because it doesn't make us feel good (Occasionally we just have to call people out though, and not bite our tongues)
I guess thats why Uplifts stories are always about how he has shown others how great he is and how he proved them wrong and how others have no clue, he even has a name for us Swillnuts a way to seperate him from us, like the king and his peasants.
Anyway carry on, not here for a back and forth argument, just an observation.
The older we get the better we were ay cryptolift
“Athletes have way less ego than the general public”.
Luckily for the chair umpire it wasn’t Joe public.
“In a nutshell”. “If I don’t have proven expertise or experience in a subject, I won’t offer comments, or advice”.
Yeh inzo, in a nutshell, what could top the famous swillnut club blax saga, the swillnut growing younger each year later, when surfing without actually surfing, because swillnuts won't surf because they don't want to charge too hard... all before the worlds worst wipeout, that could have been the worlds greatest wave, that caused the horrific injury, that the 'specialist' 'fixed' by putting the swillnut in a highchair?!!?
Actually, the 'intermediate' specialist indo trader saga is hard to top. Where the intermediate expert trader chucks his cash on a trade he doesn't even record or care about, then recommends who gives a fuck if I lose it all, might as well just lose the lot, because its a great story for the kids, and while I'm at it, fuck knows what trades I've done, before finally recommending, for that matter fuck the tax man too... in a nut shell.
However I've got faith in swillnut ArS to become the greatest swillnut of all. After bombing out last desperate effort, great dob swillnut ArS, but you booted another one for me. Again. I hope you aren't too swillnutty, or deeply upset by that tennis player's outburst after a stupid umpiring decision directly affects their career. And, exactly, as you point out in a nutshell swillnut ArS, 'Luckily for the chair umpire it wasn’t Joe public.'
Would you like some more reffies to read swillnut ArS, I got tons of em...
Hey crypto you stick to looking after Greggys hips love your work we need more animals euthanized by him at some point
Haha, yeh, you're right! I gotta watch it, I'm a clean skin, what a magnificent canvas, Greggy's got plans!

".....This debate may be “national”, but only in the sense that Sarah might debate the personal branding value of having it in more than one State or Territory. It is plainly not “important” to many who still feel the brute blow of invasion. As Tarneen Onus-Williams made clear by media to millions, celebration of massacre and theft is largely unwanted on any date at all. But, to be fair, Sarah was in Switzerland at Davos, AKA the Festival of Oppressors, last January 26.
There she was. Booing at Trump like a boss with the billionaires, the banking class and Trudeau types who rest by night in high-end chalets and walk by day through virtual reality refugee camps. You go, girl. You change the date, and the name of Arthur Phillip and the location of Sydney Cove. Oh, Sarah! If you’re going to pretend to be upset by some dispossession, look it up on Wikipedia before you write the press release."

You want Roseanne Barr on the mic?
Sentimental movies.........and mega swell events? Various forms of the spectacle.
Of what spectacle?
I'll take anyone on the mic if they're pointing out the contradictions and patheticness of the likes of SHY and HRC.
All the better if it's a female though, cos if a guy does it he's instantly labelled 'sexist' or 'mysoginist' no matter the merit of his argument.
It appears the guys aren't to say anything anymore about anything at al if there's a 'lady' even remotely involved
It's not a healthy place where we've found ourselves to be
Referencing Debord Stu. Much as we might hate to admit it, our choice of entertainment serves the same function as the sentimental movies Helen Razer referred to in the link.
What’s Hot - Foreign tourists developing a love of the ocean during their time in Australia. Life’s too short to not be subject to the wonders of Huey.
What’s Not - Every foreign clown suddenly thinking they’re a deep sea hunter cause they’ve picked up a speargun at cash converters only they have zero inclination to learn or observe relevant regulations regarding what they can or can’t shoot.
Next flippered fuckwit I see floundering out of the water with a protected species or undersized catch is going to need the assistance of a proctologist in order to clean the catch.
A decade after the disaster, a fine critical analysis of what has happened since. Read it to the end if you want to get the big picture.

I'd say that's the best summation of the last decade I've read. An extraordinary piece of research and analysis, and great writing too.
Cheers BB.
Fascinating. Thanks for the link BB. Great read.
Thanks BB. Well said and thats why I continued sending emails to the ATO and the Government and the ABC to get tax transparency on the multi-nationals. I am not a Communist, but a Communitist.
Great article by Greg Jericho

Sad state of affairs. Slavery in smug, thinly veiled disguise. Even sadder, crazier is that many of the slaves would be the first to robotically defend phil, liz, the corgis, even, well especially brave megsy, and their trumped up ozzie sidekicks, and shower them in scones, flowers, flags and cups of tea. And then howl down and hate anyone who dares speak against them. Its like many of the slaves have been slaves for so long, its all they know now.
I know 50 year old tilers, pavers, concreters, builders, cleaners, nurses, landscapers, laborers, etc, that do all the behind the scenes dirty work, to keep the show running, that are totally beat up physically, so mentally and emotionally too. And broke. Stuck, buried alive in the tunnel. Just hang in there... and don't worry, someone will be down to get ya's out soon... just keep digging in the meantime... coz it might take a few years... well maybe 20... or so...
Huge problem. Looking out the jetstar window, cursing the hungover, cut price prick out on the asphalt in the 45 plus degree heat, for not being careful enough with the quiver, whilst they are getting fuck all cut even more, and building a bottomless pit grave, smugly called a career, in discount holidays for others. Or cursing the stinkin', lousy, lazy cunt, with the fucked back, driving the discount freight van, delivering the discount surf cam part from China, losing seconds, for having a piss, instead of holding it all day, and for trying to gulp his black and gold paracetamol and donut during waking hours. Lift ya game ya whingin', useless cunt!!! Ya fucked up me surf!!!!??? I'm reportin' ya, hope they sack ya, or cut ya pay and see how ya like them apples!!! Fuck you, plenty more where you lot come from!!!

Note the charts - make the connection.
If you can't here's a quote for you:
“Recent migrants accounted for two-thirds (64.5 per cent) of the approximately 850,000 net jobs created in the past five years. For full-time employment, the impact is even more pronounced, with recent migrants accounting for 72.4 per cent of new jobs created”.
tldr: if you are working class your wage growth just got diluted by importing a couple of million people to compete with you.
Thanks for the link BB. That was a good summation. People should be angry, and governments should be turfed out. Unfortunately, as often happens with anger, the one who cops it is often not the bloke who caused it.
The Australian public disappoints me on a regular basis, and still people are saying they will vote for the current government, even if they are behind in the polls. The ALP may not be god's answer to all problems, but surely you don't give these egregious bastards another turn at bat.
The Bernard Collaery and Witness K prosecution is the abandonment of democracy, and most Australians would barely know what that was referring to.
@velocity about link.
I’m always confused when greens and green voters are pro high immigration, when the biggest environmental problems in Australia are a result of unsustainable population growth putting pressure on our environment, be it housing, roads, water, energy, farming etc
Go figure?
It's not hard to figure out indo. If Green voters had been asked it would have been found that while most agree with immigration they disagree with current policy and would prefer to see more refugees and fewer in the various classes of visa that require significant wealth to obtain. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of those jobs. I would think that, excluding the highly skilled, they would be low paid. I seem to remember that your wife works in aged care. If so, you are probably aware of the high proportion of immigrants working in that area. Is that employer discrimination or the fact that recent immigrants are more willing to take on that type of work? My money would be on the latter.
Indo, I reckon VJ's link has a fair crack at answering your question - people are scared that they will be thought of as racist, and I expect that especially includes "progressive" Greens voters.
Blindboy you got anything to back up that second sentence of yours?
So many from the regressive left look at me as if I've rolled in dog shit when I suggest that reducing immigration numbers (not refugee numbers) might be a good thing.
I think you're being too kind to a great many of them.
I'd go so far as to say that they're doing an extremely good job of fearful self-censoring virtue signalling (phew!) and are as easily led as the rest.
I don’t really want to get in a discussion about refugees etc
But I’d love to see some stats on percentage of immigrants who arrive on said visas from countries that refugees also come from.
I’m certain that many that would otherwise fall into the refugee category arrive on other visas that you can basically pay for, it’s the smart way to do things applying as a refugee is a lengthy process with little chance of success, if you had the money or qualifications it would be smart to explore other avenues first.
As we know refugees can be people of all levels of wealth not just the lower class or those that can afford to travel etc and many would have good qualifications, money and resources to work the system.
I’m not saying that is totally a bad thing, but it’s something that should be taken into account.
I do agree recent immigrants would be more likely to take on work like aged care, or so it seems that many of my wife’s workmates are recent immigrants first or second generation.
“Recent migrants accounted for two-thirds (64.5 per cent) of the approximately 850,000 net jobs created in the past five years. For full-time employment, the impact is even more pronounced, with recent migrants accounting for 72.4 per cent of new jobs created”.
tldr: if you are working class your wage growth just got diluted by importing a couple of million people to compete with you.
.............. The LNP learnt their "Workchoices" lesson real well, (1.) attack unions and organised labour (2.) royal commission into unions and the big one (3.) don't make any public announcements but just relax foreign worker tests and let them ..... bingo Workchoices Mark 2 = stagnate wage growth.
This one shows the depth of the shit we are in .....
https://www.theage.com.au/business/the-economy/memo-canberra-it-s-not-ta...
Sensible stuff from Mr Sensible himself but ............ not a word about immigration contributing to low wage growth. If you haven't read the full article I linked to above (After The Fall), I think that is the best available explanation for the stagnation in developed economies.
Look at real figure of unemployed ie. for last 10 years compared to immigrant intake, tell me how does this balance.
Ask why do we need unemployment?
Correlation does not equal causation pp. Just because two things increased at the similar rates over the same time span does not mean one caused the other. Australia's current unemployment rate is well below the long term average.
Many thanks to Sheepdog for the Greg Jericho Guardian link created on this forum on 1/7/18 . A very good article from a journo who concedes he's a privileged beneficiary but concomitantly ready to acknowledge the valid concerns of those sceptical about the tax cuts and the real thrust of the Turnbull government's long term agenda . . . indeed, who really benefits? How much more will be stashed away in shell funds? Reaganism failed America and there's Turnbull, trying it on again, who thinks we're all "throw a few penny" trickle down fuckwits. Australians have fundamentally failed to grasp that the odious politics and theorems of neo-con America is well and truly entrenched here now and what remains of true middle class Australia is being inexorably eviscerated as a result of that. Moreover, insensitive, "bigger is better" long-term mass migration ineluctably contributes to wage stagnation and a smaller slice of the pie for all but a few. On the other hand, well planned, thoughtful migration, at sustainable levels Dick Smith proposes, can be a good thing for all.
As an unremarkable aside, a family member worked for the ATO for a couple of years and handled the return of a renowned business person, known in the media for their high living, who had declared an extremely modest $ 5.5 million AUD in the 1992 tax year and who then paid just on $5,000 in tax for that year - all perfectly legal of course. This sort of shit comes as no surprise, I know, but until the hyper wealthy actually pay their fair share, rather than treat tax as something "only the little people do" the shit will continue to rain down, the resentment will escalate and the emerging gated communities will require armed surveillance. (Seems there's no such thing now as old world decency anymore.) I would also recommend people have a look at Mike Moore's documentary from a few years back (2009) called: Capitalism - a love story. This illustrates beautifully, and is a damning indictment on how avaricious, manipulative, corporate cockroaches infiltrated the GW Bush presidency and changed America forever - condemning tens of millions of citizens to shitty wages and low wage growth poverty. The writing is well and truly on the wall in Australia as well.
