thermalben, 1543545138

Also, please report any bugs in this thread.

Blowin, 1543545405

Nice.

There is no information available in the “composition tips “ box when you’re writing your post.

thermalben, 1543545508

Do you mean on how to not write silly things?

Sprout, 1543545970

Haha! This: https://www.swellnet.com/filter/tips

Sprout, 1543546369

A. Nunito Sans + link color #00cddb hurts my eyes.
B. Yes, I'm a delicate flower.
C. ...just saw the footer, yeah #00cddb is pretty offensive. See B.

thermalben, 1543546390

We'll tweak the colour on desktop, but FWIW, I reckon it works really well on mobile (which is a much larger percentage of our traffic). Main reason is that there's much less of it on the screen at any one time.

Blowin, 1543546540

Colour does seem weak on IPad. Not enough contrast ?

Is that what you’re referring to ?

Sprout, 1543546853

Yeah same with the orange menu links #ffa800.
I feel like both need to be juuuust a touch darker.
These are always useful:
https://material.io/design/color/the-color-system.html#color-usage-palettes
https://material.io/tools/color
https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/
Nice work though, definitely feels more summery.

Sprout, 1543547264

You're right. It looks good on mobile.

Jono, 1543548410

Hi Sprout, I'm the developer - appreciate the feedback. I've reduced the brightness of the text links a bit which definitely works better. There will be some more small ongoing tweaks over the next few weeks regarding colours, UX and design.

Sprout, 1543550353

Legend! That definitely helps, at least on my monitor (PG279Q).

surfstarved, 1543550593

I like it, from an aesthetic perspective. And you've even managed to send us a day with both swell and offshore winds to celebrate the new-look site - big props for that little addition.

Lanky Dean, 1543554236

Do I need glasses or has the text size changed?

yoda_lite, 1543555904

Found a bug with the Multi-cam. If one of the cams is offline (ie Goolwa/Middleton) there is no opportunity to change to a different one - the little edit icon in the top right remains greyed out and unresponsive.

The new look is pretty nice BTW too.

carpetman, 1543556887

You’re probably onto it but text in the forecast column doesn’t fit once you get above 10ft. So north shore forecast reads 15- (not 15-20ft)

Jono, 1543557060

Well spotted soz_punter - that was actually fixed a while back in the old site but it snuck back into this new build. It's on our list and will be fixed ASAP.

sypkan, 1543557174

"Do I need glasses or has the text size changed?"

Black print isn't dark and/or thick enough, blue print is too bright and too thick.

And my eyes are too old

yoda_lite, 1543557461

Cheers Jono.

sypkan, 1543558402

Also, I don't seem to be able to zoom in using chrome. Other browser is fine.

carpetman, 1543560785

Forecast details aren’t displaying in some rows. Example north shore, Sat 08/12, shows 2.3m (but no direction or period shown).

Lanky Dean, 1543564468

@spykan,
I am not that old ...or so I thought.

thermalben, 1543565867

Carpetman - you’re right. Seems to be a bug, probably related to the width of the text. We will check it out,

redmondo, 1543624593

Nice work Jono. You won't find me indulging in silly posts. It is very impressive what you guys have done.

indo-dreaming, 1543696820

I don't know if this is related to new website, but three times now, I've been redirected to spam sites, you know when the URL start flicking up random spam sites about 10 a second then lands on one:(

Happened yesterday twice and then just now.

When it happened yesterday i though maybe I've picked up some bug/virus but i haven't been surfing anything dodgy and i spent quite a bit of time on other websites yesterday and it didn't do it?

Weird?

thermalben, 1543697340

ID - can you describe in more details please - what page were you on? And what page did it send you to? I don't quite understand what you mean by "...URL start flicking up random spam sites about 10 a second then lands on one".

Did you actually click on anything (i.e. an ad) or did it just randomly happen?

If you can send through screenshots to info@swellnet.com that'll help us to debug.

Westofthelake, 1543702935

After a few days using various platforms I've found that I really like the changes/upgrades.

The only words I can think of to summarise my conclusions are that Swellnet now looks 'more modern'.

I did have a bit of 'wow' moment when I was on the desktop looking at a surf forecast and I realised there were no ads. Beautiful and at the same time kinda stark. I imagined a subtle water mark type image in the background would look cool.

But like I said, no ads!
Way cool.
Worth $8.95 right there.

thermalben, 1543703768

Thanks mate... really appreciate the feedback.

Also we've reduced the clutter in the top navigation bar, which, along with the removal of the ad units (for subscribers) means it's a much better mobile experience.

We've still got a lot of work to do (and a lot of new products to launch) but we've finally getting closer to a more consistent aesthetic across desktop/mobile.

indo-dreaming, 1543716748

Did it again, just spam/scam type websites sites. (dollarcreative.com was one in my history i must have ended up on)

Was just reading this page didn't click on anything (but this morning and yesterday it also did it from main page and and article)

In my URL bar thing, it just flicks through different websites address very quickly trying to load each one, then it ends on one, but doesn't load it just comes up with a page wanting me to download flash (I'm on Macbook) off course i then just close.

Expect if no one else is having this issue I've picked some malware type thing up or something.

Just weird it's only doing it on Swellnet and spent much more time on other sites today with no issues.

Maybe i will try Swellnet in another browser and see if i still have the issue.

thermalben, 1543721592

Very odd. You’re the only person to report it so we new a little more info in order to debug it, but I’d suggest you give your computer the once over with AV software.

Pops, 1543791176

I had the same issue as indo (only one time), the day that the new design went live. 5 "dodgy" websites in my history: "dollarcreative.com/...", "ezanmedia.com/...", "cpmazu.com/...", "exclusiverewards36.online/...", "nextoptim.com/..."
I think it happened when I opened a link in a new tab FWIW, right before the new design went live.

truebluebasher, 1543792935

Pops!

Firstly! Cutting Capt' Cha down to size...(Every fibre of my being says thanks)
We Myositis crew were in agony with 30 min tic tac toe battle just to say hello.
Each extra mouse scroll is more torturous than pushing a car outta the driveway.

I also wish to thank swellnet for maintaining #1 live webcast service thru-out..

Fine! if we must be upfront & honest about what bugs us then so be it...

*Last weeks News Titles/Archives & browsing are no longer street accessible.
Fine for me and all here to app the login...Just a thought for newcomers.
I'm not judging as this is quality merch.(More about swellnet in open market place)

*'Seemingly' larger text offers less text per line.(maybe a letter or two?)
I'm guessing that leads to more Scroll / lag / print time...again fine if that's built in.
I've never owned a mobile phone so I'm least qualified on universal scroll format
If you guys are geared up for mobiles then I can sacrifice an abc here & there.

indo-dreaming that's my bad. I did apologize for xxx Skin Deep upload.(Porn=Ads)
You'll need to download this WSL Naked pro onto your Disc (I never said that)

What's not to like? Talking about the new site people!

belly, 1543794275

Overall looks good but have noticed maybe a touch slower to load than old pages.
One minor design issue. I view 95% on hand-held android. In portrait view I can't read the y axis of the surf forecast chart (Narooma). For me it reads 'ft' rather than '2 ft'. Basically I can't see the numbers. When I rotate to landscape then I can see the numbers.

campbell, 1543796937

Much slower to load than previously was on android (blackberry) phone and I cannot view webcams? they load up as normal but screen just stays black with the swellnet logo and play/pause icons ? Fine at home on mac desktop though so must be android issue?

thatguy, 1543797628

No issues with android for me. I'm using a S7 and it works perfectly. Nice job.

thermalben, 1543798260

Campbell - we haven't been able to test any Blackberry devices.. it's such a tiny percentage of our audience that it's hard to work around. Do you know what software version you're running? We'll try to work with a few simulators to replicate the issue.

thermalben, 1543798707

Belly - thanks, we'll take a look at that (font size).

thermalben, 1543798834

TBB - the 'load more news' button at the bottom doesn't work, we'll fix it ASAP. Font sizes will also be tweaked.

truebluebasher, 1543802083

Frequently asked Questions that get replies? ...some kinda swellnet voodoo magic! Thanx genie Ben... For my 3rd wish...{Photos}

Firstly thanks to Swellnet for supporting my home town GC Surf Photographers...

*Photo of the day now seems to vanish as you blink!

*[Photos]...71 Albums (March 2009- June 2016)...swellnet's #1 Surf Safari site.
It takes exactly 5 mins robot racing click time > > 2009 album (Slower if searching)

Also no photos in albums from March 2009-Oct 2013...(Including Bens & Craigs)

[No result- Search window] is only available from individual albums not main page.
swellnet Photo Albums need a search index + missing photos or just a dose of TLC.

PS: Pretty certain swellnet are still running these Escape Albums post June 2016.
Craig's recent North Coast Hippy Trip freaked us out...Please check on that Ben!

Jono, 1543809064

OK the surf forecast table font sizes have been tweaked - let me know if there is still any issues in there.

simba, 1543814816

im sure this is just a 'me' thing but wont let me have a favourite surf cam and same with reports, gotta go thru the process to get to park beach cam...and coffs report...also wheres home button?

indo-dreaming, 1543817667

Yeah i think I've just got something on my laptop....was weird how it only happened on Swellnet hence why i mentioned it.

No issues today.

maddogmorley, 1543825679

Home button is the Swellnet logo simba. And can't have a favourite if ya not logged in - maybe thats the problem?

Craig, 1543826699

Simba, click the hamburger top right and you'll get your saved surfcam and report.

Indo stop looking at porn ;)

Open apology to fellow swellnetonians...part my fault we lost the Photo Albums.
I wasn't making my wish in a hospital ward so no need to pull the show.
Nor did I demand the crew to fix or rid the albums yesterday.
None here mind if you sort the holiday snaps over Xmas, we're on a good wicket.

truebluebasher, 1543830884

Open apology II to fellow swellnetonians.
How was I to know make a wish jest timed with make a wish swellnet ad.
I do support Starlight Foundation & donated to their cause again today.
All of Oz knows I stole the joke! Give me a break...every which way I turn.

thermalben, 1543863956

All good TBB - we're going to relaunch the galleries properly in the near future so figured it was better to spend time on that rather than fixing the old gallery system.

simba, 1543864404

Hi Craig, yeah ive done that but blue banner comes up but shows news forum my acc logout only?

simba, 1543864921

sorted now thanks,im a bit slow when it comes to computers..hahah

Craig, 1543865376

Ah cool.

truebluebasher, 1543867741

Days of our lives photos are back to live another day! (Wet dreams for all) Thanx!

truebluebasher, 1543868990

Just read your very considerate open & honest reply on the Photo Albums Ben.
I'm sure we're all with you on priceless Albums. We all agree how precious they are.
Please don't rush on my account.Sleigh's full with swellnet fillers...Thanks Santa!
PS: Being archives I guess how ever long it takes is the right time. I'm cool with that.

Gary G, 1543872884

Ben, it’s very important for Gary that everybody knows that Gary’s font is bigger than everyone else’s.

Also, please apply subtle orange tints to Gary’s profile picture to increase hits.

Gary G, 1543872975

Gary’s current favourite tint at the salon is ’Carribean Dreams’ if that helps choose the most flattering shade

Pops, 1543875148

Hi Ben,
Just got redirected to "dollarcreative.com/..." again, from this forum page, so it's not just indo. Browsing with firefox, if that's any help for troubleshooting.

Sprout, 1543877107

This is very minor, but I can't see a direct link to https://www.swellnet.com/surfcams
I quite like that page as you can see an image from each cam and go straight to the ones which look good. Probably don't want it linked via the "Surfcams" menu item but perhaps add it as the first or last option in the sub-menu?

Jono, 1543883322

Sprout - we have been discussing this and a button is in the pipeline. In the meantime (on desktop) you can right-click on the surfcams menu item and open it in a new tab or window.

thermalben, 1543884240

Pops, can you describe the way it happens? Are you just reading and scrolling on this forum thread, and then suddenly the browser redirects - without you clicking on anything - to a spam site?

Also, are you on mobile or desktop?

Bnkref, 1543886138

Gary, I can't help you with the tint, but have you tried using a magnifying glass? That can work wonders.

Pops, 1543889154

Ben, its happened exactly as you described - redirected without clicking a link, maybe a minute or so after visiting the page. I'm on my work pc (windows 7), browsing with the latest edition of firefox. Let me know if you need any more information.

thermalben, 1543891622

Thanks Pops. And is it any page on Swellnet, or this forum thread in particular?

Pops, 1543892324

It's happened once on this thread (this morning), and once on another forum thread last week just after the new design went live - can't remember which page that was; I'd opened it in a new tab and it had redirected to a spam site by the time I flicked to that tab.
I tend to check the site a couple of times a work day, so it's not a regular occurance.

indo-dreaming, 1543896964

Wow...so it's not just me.

I did think it was weird how it was only doing it on this website and only porn I've been watching has been on long tested and spam free porn. (hey I'm only human)

It did happen again last night...happened to me also in this thread using Safari on MacBook Air....it also happened one time in one of the articles. (hasn't happened from surf report or on phone)

Didn't click or scroll and would have been under a minute being on the site all times.

I haven't been spending that much time on here, well as much as i sometimes do.

Pops, 1543898965

Yep, not just you indo.
Ben, dunno if this helps, but I've just had a look at this page with the firefox debugger, and in the "Sources" tab, right at the bottom there is a tree labelled "z.moatads.com", which contains a javascript file "moatad.js", which a quick google search tells me is adware - probably the cause of the redirects.
After quickly flicking through a few other websites I regularly visit, the only other one the "moatads" source appeared on was espncricinfo.com.
Not sure if it's a problem on my end or something injected into the site's code?

thermalben, 1543899180

Thanks ID.

We're very confident it's not our website code (everything is clean), so could only be sourced through our ad server (which we don't control). I've contacted our agency to see if they can look into it a little deeper.

Thanks for the feedback.. we'll get to the bottom of this!

thermalben, 1543899447

Pops - most websites use a bunch of ad tracking software like that to serve and track ads. They're usually harmless.

Pops, 1543900004

Sure - just happened to be one that I hadn't seen before so I thought it'd be best to flag it.

Pops, 1543900302

And thanks for looking into it - I'm not too fussed by the occasional redirect, and know enough to not click on any links when it happens, but wouldn't want someone else to fall for it.

lostdoggy, 1544036483

May I ask why for NSW the list in surf reports/forecasts runs south-north yet the cams run north-south?
QLD both lists run Sth-Nth and the Southern states seem a bit all over the place.

thermalben, 1544037420

Good point. It's actually been on the to-do list for a while (NSW should run north-south). We'll get it fixed soon.

As for how geographical surf report lists are determined: this is a fascinating area of UX. There are three options: popularity, alphabetically, and geographically. All have their pros and cons.

From my end, I prefer geographically, as it makes the most sense to scan along the coast to find where your beach is positioned. And, it also would seem smart to show the most popular regions near the top (hence why Qld starts in the South) but this is difficult in NSW where the busiest locations are in the middle (Sydney/Hunter/Illawarra).

Conversely, with Vic and WA, where the locations run more west-east than north-south, how should they be positioned? Especially with the busiest locations in the middle.

Another option (which we'll implement soon) will be a general search bar at the top, which is probably the best solution overall. But that requires more smarts in the backend, which we haven't finished yet.

truebluebasher, 1544050586

Southern hemisphere natural order sees Sundials follow the Sun counter clockwise.
Australia defies the laws of nature by reading weather & running time clockwise.

One's world must never turn upside down but there you have it...("Downunder")

Now to explain to the kids that all their ipads are transcribed by ancient Joh-jibe.

Answer!
Only 18 shopping days to xmas I'd advise signposting the kid'z North Pole version.

truebluebasher, 1544062769

The nature of the world can also be reflected into a rose or surf report charts.
In fact all are headed for the same holy grail.(progress is slow but noticeable)

This seems simple but isn't. Happy to share my observations with swellnet.
From top down experiencing the great outdoors live in it's natural order.
All interacting on a graph using their natural charm.(Don't fight it ! Go with the flow)

(Sun) UV/temps read ultra high skirting clouds dumping measured rain from sky.
(Moon) Sure as night follows day Moon pokes faces, drawing tides higher that way.
(Wind) Angrily spikes & flings needing arrows that swing + a water temp' thing.
(Tide) Endlessly flows in & out creating a lopping pattern throughout.
(Swell) Always builds then drops, a bit like a block grid or line graph with stops.
(Swell Direction 1 & 2)Comes off the back off wind as such your final outlined pin!

No! I never made it up! Just finally understood how it operates. Plain as Day!

Peter Pedestrian, 1544077970

The most bland. Flat. Unimaginative. Pasty white boy website I've seen for a long long internet time . Embarrassing. And it takes waaaaaaaaay too long to load. That spinning progress circle is juvenile. You guys cannot seriously believe this is improvement ? Pull yer heads in...

thermalben, 1544078580

Peter - I’m curious on your take as to what constitutes a good website. Which surf forecasting websites do it well?

truebluebasher, 1544112084

This is the most honest, generous & useful website I ever come across.
Frequently asked Questions that get answered within the hour by real humans!
I've been on the internet since last century & no sites offer such hands on quality.

swellnet run most reliable Surf comp webcasts & most Women's webcasts.
Biggest sites in town jilt customers who arrive praising Swellnet's reliable coverage.

Only this week we see a Swellnet event elevate to share global stage with WSL.

The design cleanly frames the best News/Photos/Comments/Reports.(Why not?)
Surfers like to bring the wild blue yonder with them...everywhere they go.
Less is more in our world. Very few see the need to crowd it in.
Sure surf product could fill the page but we highly value our open/honest website.
Should swellnet reintroduce some more ads the quality will still shine through!

Alongside Ben I'm also intrigued as to any better from any era. Please do share!

shoredump, 1545119490

I can’t seem to “load more” when trying to look for older articles. Can’t go past the first 5 or 6. iPhone / safari

Craig, 1545121532

Yeah that's been flagged thanks Shorey.

indo-dreaming, 1545123484

BTW. Haven't had any issues with the site since i last mentioned it doing funny things.

Pops, 1545172430

Neither - looks like whatever the issue was, it's been fixed. Thanks Ben & team.

thermalben, 1545178897

Interesting.. we haven’t found anything and thus haven’t made any changes.

We’ll keep an eye on things though.

GODS QUAD, 1546996415

Hey crew, just a bit of UX feedback — navigating the forums is a bit painful... To see the latest post in a thread you have to manually scroll to the bottom of the page to click a numbered button to reach the end. Might be easier having these page number links at the top of the thread too.

And is there a search feature? On the forums and for the rest of the site?!?

thermalben, 1546997722

GQ, we're aware of those issues and are tabling up an overhaul of the entire forum section - including a landing page (similar to other forum based sites) where you'll be able to much more easily search for things and see what's going on.

It's always been hard to focus attention on this part of the site as it records such a small percentage of our overall traffic, but now that the new design template is in place, we're in a better position to make long term changes.

GODS QUAD, 1547071488

Cool. Hey, maybe that update will boost forum users then!?

thermalben, 1547072647

Maybe.

But even quadrupling the number of forum users would still result in very little traffic increase to the website (and ultimately very little, if no increase in revenue).

Don't get me wrong, there's a million things I'd love to do on the site: comprehensive weather forecast tools, surfcam enhancements, and all kinds of content opportunities, plus a major overhaul of the Apps - but they all cost (excessively large amounts of) money to conceptualise, draft, design, code, test, upload and then launch - in the hope that users like 'em, and they're as successful as we'd hoped and imagined.

And sometimes, we go through that design/build/test process behind the scenes - at great expense - only to have things not work out for one reason or another. So, that's money down the drain and we're back to square one.

As such, we need to focus on those ideas and projects that make good economic sense for the business.

the-u-turn, 1547075051

10 cents worth. Having used the new site for a few weeks now I think it's a very impressive upgrade. Clean, minimalist and well worth the benefits for the subscription. Looking ahead I can see, from Ben's comments, that further improvements will be coming. Congrats all round (in particular to the developer, Jono).

indo-dreaming, 1549144822

Go figure, that redirect to spam page thing has happened again last few days, only really does it once, seems harmless so not worried but just thought id give you guys a heads up.

thermalben, 1549145859

Thanks ID. We haven’t made any changes so not sure what might be causing it.

Next time it happens, please let me know how it happened (what pages were were on before/after). Also please take a screenshot of what you see, and the full URL of the spam page it’s linking to (as it may offer some clues).

indo-dreaming, 1549156124

Heres something i found might be relevant https://forum.postcrossing.com/viewthread.php?tid=121787

And bottom of thread on this page https://www.resetera.com/threads/the-ad-reporting-thread.60928/page-4

might give you guys some clues.

Just looked in my history ended on this one (fake page)http://mac-safety-check.com.flockrdi.p1mkxtvehy8sw8nhoix8tdmf7q.icu/o/ensl/index.php?browser=Safari&zo=AU&app=Mac%20Cleanup%20Pro&hul=fam.fstrfc.space&ns=1&cep=5rGeuD41JIBC9ZCB_DGvRZqReJGV4kiul_311sJ4o3tzBYEUmwVI_HM6SiSAbDiPd2Yj4KzuKYfvCVxcLUT1PHzGFXssx1ryZwpTn_KCIocg7CDu0hkSWl3reZx3lJWrtNecVb5FrS-yHh-DpBfxFj1fzWZaWmQU9d7cRK54Uy6-ocYODEJp8Jo49BPTLP59uHmGZnnmHLqYwkObjPRruSZEbWOSHaLtHjHSh3FDklzjWsCgWfsMorsZ57gOHhySFPvwP10OaNcNlw7Ez5MeZQGUE60TFQ_JE8w0g1pyheoO_RtDDkZsiD_hbsZ6v4YYvUUBUTbjVFbtcS_uKNIS4wLFNbgNGa9mt2QbjkdS6EoLPfLUoPNt2SIhSW6-QnwtJMxBS7JTjGwbbaQWz__e6NTMbdJdoHdirKT4VhP-KmGz0nD060acWl_tbGFbKnUvAJjnLXTzDPOTKWlNIOs3WQ&zone=1806387-2919733628-0&lang=EN&cid=15491435202023625850188719807772752&time=1549143522&campaign=128165220&redirection_cost=0.05#b

But also went to this one for a split second before redirecting
https://dollarcreative.com/click?node=11&time=1549143480&id=131&pid=45&fid=45&sid=14483&ext=1&rank=0&ad=eyJ0aXRsZSI6IiIsInVybCI6IiJ9

(doesn't load now, but in my history)

Also one more was in the history from Friday, i just tried to click on it to cut and paste Address but then it didn't load and went to the two pages I've linked above now, its changed in my history from Friday to the dollar creative URL...im pretty sure the URL was www.addexchange(blah blah blah)....or something

As I've mentioned never any issues on any other websites.

Strangely it seems to happen in the mornings last three days first time i go to swellnet, then on return visits no issues.

BTW. No pattern on websites i was on before or after, on Friday it was just Facebook before then google maps after, Yesterday a news paper article before then a google search after.

The one thing I would like to add here, every forum I visit sorts oldest to latest it is a pain in the arse. Latest to oldest makes far more sense, If a user wants the historical stuff then they click the numbered pages or go to the start. Easier and more efficient navigation and use.
Other than that I really like the new design and it works extremely well in both Firefox and Vivaldi browsers, the latter however does not do live streams well but that is the browser not the site.
Cheers!

The captcha issue is intermittent . Not as bad as it used to be.

What page were you on beforehand? A surf report/cam or article/forum page?

Also, what browser are you using?

I'm certainly happy to look into this in more detail, but I'm just worried that you're the only person reporting it - so we therefore can't rule out the possibility that it's a problem at your end (perhaps some malware or a browser extension).
