Hardest rock off ive ever tried is jakes point 3-4 foot plus in a southerly..there is one spot without oyster shells or barnacles that all the locals know since a grommy but guys like me new to town find it hard to locate every time we jump off..50% of the time you then get pinaball machined between the rocks and sets after jumping off and trying not to scratch your fins on the ledges after rock off..
My hardest rock off of anywhere i ve been but haven't surfed lennox.

groundswell you should know the rock off by now, it only takes a few times to learn, Anyways thanks for the photos and details of your history.
K slater goat is not even comparable he only did 2 contests (2 weeks) while I spent 5 seasons there. he even dropped in on me to get the best barrell of his life at the time. on a recent podcast he says I was snaking the pros and nobody liked me -thanks KS, your bro Sean came and hung out smoking bongs with me though.
Whoever had asked about fins for the DS , you forgot to say fcs or futures, I was going to say F4 but who knows if compatible?
fcs big wave fins overpriced BS cost $5 to make in china. g-10 fins cost that much, which are much stronger, how can fcs justify that price?
only kooks would use fcs in a big wave board anyways, obviously paying NF a lot to use them , knowing that they are inferior to what most others are using..

I wasn't taking the piss out of you- Kelly has probably 2 minutes of barrel time in the 90's at speedies but without trying to sound like a fanboy trying to kiss your ass i absolutely know you spent years there getting and picking the best waves of the swell..I know for a fact you got more barrel time at speedies and moneys than anyone i know while you were in indo and g-land.
By me saying "lol" i meant he might be the goat but he spent most of his time trying to beat everybody else in contests to be number 1 when there are plenty of free surfers, ferals and travellers who rip some learning east javan dialect like you did to live with plengkung locals off dried fish or whatever fish they catch and not getting photos of everything they do..
groundswell, 1677949835
Also about jakes- its a great wave and some say world class but is not the kind of wave i like to surf often, personally more into other waves more between gero and gnaraloo than jakes and hate the strong current in a southerly at jakes so dont surf it that often.
Also most of the time since ive lived here ive been a bit fat and unfit so dont surf like im 21-30 any more.
Particularly getting to my feet quickly.
So spent more time filming it than surfing it while ive been here.

The 6’6” was second hand and came with EA quads which I will probably sell , I will try them first and see how they feel. Webby gave me a set of the fins he’s making with alkali , I posted a picture a few pages back . I brought a set of futures padillac fins second hand for a good price . The EA are medium as are the padillac but comparing all 3 the EA are largest then the alkali then the padillac which is what I will put on the 7’6” . My 6’10” has fcs2 and I’m using H4s in quads and really impressed. Had some fun waves at overhead kirra and slabbing wall at d- bar last decent swell.

Since we're on the topic of fins plus a renewed interest from new DS owners I'll give an update on my journey thus far. Surfed my black friday DS 6'8 for the last swell late Jan/Feb from recollection. Firstly the board, wowza! It's an added confidence. If I'm usually say 6/10 at 8 foot, now I'm 8/10. All of a sudden after the bombs instead of being a little hesitant. Now Fins. I bought stretch quads on marketpkace and usually surf thrusters so cannot say weather it's specifically the board or the fins(or both) but I now understand "rhino" chaser. The amount of momentum was phenomenal, so much so that I outran the barrel at times and played with various stalling options which was fun in itself...
The turning circle was a bit drawn out or sticky as you're flying down the line I guess and have now purchased some small quad rears (with 80/20foil) to tweak further. To be continued...

great plan, because the stretch rear fins are fairly large and you could loosen up with the smaller rear size 80/20s
Clam, 1679368810
those grey alkali fins webby has are the first batch made of my template that I was riding in the last ~ 6 years, they have small rear fins and worked good for me until I started playing with different fin sizes, I'm trying new sizes in the last year or two.
I'm using a more balanced size fin fronts and rears, a bit smaller fronts and a bit bigger in rear, but not actually bigger in the back and smaller in the front. I just mean a bit more than the template webby has in stock. following the Hawaiians ,like kai lenny who has for real "bigger rear and smaller fronts"

if your ordering a DS be sure to ask for round safety nose, otherwise by default it will be a pointed nose tip.
The majority want pointed nose. so be sure to specify you need a safe nose. with a DS board this big and heavy you should have the nose tip safe. it actually bothers me that my design has been changed to a sharp point on them. : disclaimer

Got my DS.
7'2x 20x 3 1/4 49.5lt. I'd post a photo, but can't for the life of me work out how to do that here... Regardless it looks amazing.
Was over $500 to get it through customs on top of the $600 freight to get over from Oz. So keep that in mind NZ crew looking to get one. Next time I'll fly over and pick it up!
First surf was a bit weird. 6ft plus at a local deepwater bombie that moves A LOT of water.
Just on dark, slightly stormy, fresh choppy swell, overcast with just me out. Spooky to say the least, so I wasn't in the most relaxed mood. Paddles smaller than I thought it would with zero issues duck diving. With the thickness even at 20 wide sitting on it was surprisingly rocky.
Anyways, paddled no worries in, but with the forward volume I found myself lying further up on the board and jumping up a little too far forward and having to shuffle back to get a bottom turn in. This with the fact the wave has a steep take off that morphs into a fat section where you bottom turn had me regretting surfing it as a quad. To be fair I wasnt in a relaxed headspace and was needing a buddy out there, so it was a bit of a straight-up, no-frills, 4 waves and get the fuck in surf.
I want to try it again at this wave as a thruster. It's my first board with Futures (Impressed, makes way more sense than FCS} so will buy a thruster set. The other wave I got it for is a faster down-the-line wave which I know will appreciate the quad. (Pyzels Quads BTW}
Webster recommended the Tokoro's so will probably give them a shot.
Thoughts on fin sizing for a board of this size? I usually roll with large fins but thinking dropping down the mediums might be wise.
But there you go, first surf done and dusted with a burning desire to get it in the water again!

Whats with the $500 Customs Charge ?
Supafreak, 1679554415
What’s the deal with customs ? Is that an import tax ? Fark they don’t miss ya . I can relate to the solo mission you were on , hard to focus on the surf when your mind is straying to what lurks beneath. I have shark eyes stickers on my local boards for some minor mental relief haha. Anyway enjoy the new stick and let us know how your fin experiments go .

$23 Bio-security levy
$68 Customs duty
$316 GST {Paid GST on the board in OZ too}
$28 import transaction fee
and GST on Bio levy & import fee.
Plus Air NZ whacking on
$80 for something I'm not even sure of?!?
To be fair I only had to pay for the customs stuff as Beachgrit offered me a thank-you "Pick any board, anywhere" deal.
If I had to pay I would've just waited till I was doing a OZ mission.

avoid large fins with the DS model, large fins are for small boards with concaves and sharp rails. the opposite of a DS with vee, soft rails, max volume..so in powerful waves big fins will cause drag and stiffen the turning ability. if the waves are weak and gutless then big fins help to provide some drive/ speed....
if waves powerful then use smaller fins, try it and report back thanks guys

If any of you think the DS looks too blobby, but are curious on a Webster, have a look at the Spartan.
My 7'6 hasn't seen a lot of action since moving from my old haunt, but that was a mistake. First day of the recent run of long period swell I took it out in barely OH waves. Friends laughed when they saw it, but I ended up getting three nice little barrels and some solid carves. And I was of course hopelessly overgunned.
The week before it was a treat in 12-15ft faces.
It's a refined, versatile semi gun.

For anyone wanting the stretch quads I’m pretty sure they are no longer being brought into Australia according to the Futures rep I know. I like them in fishes and shorties in up to 5ft waves, they have a nice inner foil that makes them feel lively, I haven’t tested them in step ups, the rears are too big for me at 5’9 65kg in bigger boards. I have a 5’11 DS and I use F4 fronts with 80/20 foil 3.625 quad rears. Feels very stiff with bigger fins like camel said and I haven’t found a thruster setup that works for me yet.

freeride76, 1683675644
I love the feeling, especially with the quad set-up.
Feels like the two quad fins and swallow work in conjunction to provide more drive and just a better feeling underfoot - it feels more positive to me- wherever you go rail to rail you have fins engaged and one tip of the swallow in the water.
Feels much more stable on whitewater rebounds too.

Hey Lost, the fins are probably 20mm closer to the tail on the DS Twin. The fact that there is a lot less board combined with thinner rails gives it a real lively feel. Handles late drops and barrels well also. It's the perfect size for those days that aren't quite solid enough for the 6'6. Pic from yesterday:
Can you get him to write a few Words ?
Hi Udo. Yeah great to be out in the bigger stuff with a large board. First time stepping up from the 6’8 to the 8ft. Paddled well, kept you clear of trouble and duck diving not a problem. Didn't have the right fin set up (thruster) and was really only getting used to it.
Wasn’t really sure where to position myself on the board when paddling in. Tried sitting further back than i thought felt right and that seemed to work. Sometimes i feel though the nose of the DS pushes a bit of water when trying to paddle into bigger ones (rather than knifing in).
As i say, nice board and still experimenting.

I saw some 2nd hand boards webby was selling on Instagram, the EPS epoxy carbon boards seemed to be about 400 -500 dollars , they were grom boards only 5ft,
The regular grom boards 3-400 bucks,
Boards have become much higher price in the last 3 years , try the 2nd hand racks

My 6'10 DS is 6 years old now, and this is the sort of punishment it takes, no fucks given:
Snapped my leggie in big (2-3 x OH) point surf this morning. Long swim trying to stay safe while estimating where it might have ended up. Spotted it on the boulders and managed to get to dry land just 100m down the line. I wasn't perfectly unscathed, but the board was. Just sat there with it's chunky glass job.
Thank you Webby :-)

Supafreak, 1710991055
Decided to take the 7’6 for a paddle today, surf was 4ft with 6ft bombs ( well overhead ) I’ve only surfed it once before at 4ft greenmount just to get a feel for how it would duck dive . I was really impressed today at how easily a board this size was to turn , the bottom turns felt unreal and coming off the top I was in glide mode . So much fun and had some great late drops as just getting used to how to best paddle in . I didn’t get this board for 10-12ft surf more a aid in helping this old boy into waves when it is 6-8ft and some of the breaks I’m headed too are a long long paddle . Really impressed with this board and the fins that Wayne supplied went great.

Loving the Cannonball - didn't gel with it straight away for some reason. Had it over in Indo in reasonably solid waves where I didn't ride it as much. Loving it back home in Vic though in everyday surf.

@seabiscuit , thanks for feedback , what was the problem in indo ? Too wide in tail ? Or not enough rocker ?

Nice looking board. $450 is about right.
Where are you based gilbert? Not for me but a mate blew a fin plug on a board yesterday and I think he might be retiring that board and potentially looking for a replacement. He's got a 6'8 DS and is a fan of them.
gilbert, 1721797456
Located in Melbourne - don't really need to sell it but i just find myself surfing other boards more so figure it's better in the water vs in the shed! Awesome for when the beachies are big.
Got a nice 6'6 Vouch long fish twin and a 6'2 Corey Graham twin so a 6'2 DS just overlaps them too much. Epic travel board though and I'd take it over any of my other boards if I was going to the Ments or similar (I did last year, but swell didn't get big enough to need it). It's glassed very strong - feels like a tank and it'd last forever

Think this has been mentioned on here years ago.
My DS boards don't have any dents from my feet because DS boards are made with high density foam, and glassed with at least 2 x 6 Oz ,
2 x 6 Oz + 1 x 4 Oz or
3 x 6 Oz
(On the foot area )
This makes an incredible difference to the foot dent area! The boards look like new, kept in a board cover they can look in perfect condition after 10 years of use!
freeride76, 1725519984
My 7'6" is like that- as new.
My 6'6" is glassed lighter and has some wear and tear denting- still, after 5 years of being absolutely thrashed it's in very good nick.
GuySmiley, 1725521165
I have a much loved and surfed Van Straalen fish that is still perfect after 12 years, Much gratitude Dick :)
chico, 1725583622
Yep solid glass job on my stock 6'8" DS - I'm in WA and honestly I must have ditched my board hundreds of times in 4-8ft waves. One small rail to stringer crease which I got fixed but other that it's been indestructible after 4 years of solid waves.
Bnkref, 1725585874
