If you pick who's on the board, you don't have to be so brutal, to get the same outcome. Economically, if inflation is running hot and you make the board juice it, you have the potential for runaway inflation - which hurts everyone much harder, history tells us. Hence, banana republic.

The board has more legitimacy if it can be seen as independent, and responding to economic data and forecasting rather than what's popular.

VJ, a sensible enough comment, but some thoughts might put you more at ease about it.

Firstly, the independence of the board remains, it’s just a different board for setting interest rates. This brings it more into line with major overseas democracies and shouldn’t lead to anything other than some more technical and real world experience at RBA board level.

Regarding stacking the board, the government has always appointed the board members. They are also finite terms, they aren’t ongoing positions until they retire or drop off the perch. This has always been the case.

Your comment about Ford in the 60’s isn’t really apposite. In Australia the government directly set interest rates either by fiat or via the head of Treasury for much of our history. Although Costello claims credit for giving the board their independence, that’s a bit of a misreading in that it had already been happening through the Hawke/Keating years. Costello just sent them a letter to say “keep the inflation rate between 2-3%.” Great work Pete, you lazy imbecile.

It was the floating of the dollar that made things really interesting because that then meant that the money market boys could punish the economy if they thought that the interest rates were out of whack. That threat remains over the heads of any country that engages in trade.

The final point to allay any concerns about government fiddling with interest rates is that your comment presupposes that the RBA board is getting it right and has always done, and that is patently untrue. Unfortunately the current mob are stuck in their classical economics cloisters and can’t see the wood, or the trees, or the forest.

Interest rates could and should be eased tomorrow and it will have no detrimental effect on inflation. The current board believe that inflation won’t come down until unemployment goes up, and the only reason for this is a completely discredited theory from the 70’s which believes there is a ‘non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment’. The inflation rate of the last few years has had nothing to do with the unemployment rate here and still doesn’t.

It’s a crock, a discredited theory from aeons ago that particularly has zero credibility. Note also that the current rate of inflation is within the 2-3% band, but they want their trimmed mean to also get within that range.

And to cap off this economic theory nonsense, there is absolutely nothing magical about the 2-3% target band for inflation. Someone just made it up, there is no science behind it. Worrying about the trimmed mean being 0.4% above an imaginary target range makes no sense at all.

I would suggest that the target band be slightly modified, and that the band be stated in terms of quarterly inflation. I would set it at 0.4% to 0.8% per quarter. Not that there is anything magical about that either, but it would make more sense.

Why? The inflation rate we were experiencing from the September quarter last year is ancient history. Using that as a guide for anything is akin to looking in your rear view mirror while driving forward.

Current economic growth is anaemic at best. Actual per capita growth is barely static or is going backwards. Increasing interest rates or holding them higher than they need to be for longer than they need to be, so that you can have another 70 or 80 thousand people out of work is just crazy economic talk.

This has been talked about, and pretty much expected for years but the in case anyone was in any doubt that the two party system in Australia is well and truly in decline and the parties are acknowledging this.

I posted those election results to show, despite millions of ALP voting migrants coming here, nothing has really changed in 28 years. But if those migrants all vote for the ALP, why did the LNP keep importing people? And don’t forget half of Albo’s one million migrants had their visas approved by the LNP government.

The Hills area around Sydney has been under housing development for the last 15 or so years. Mostly under the control of Liberal Government. Should some 72000 migrants manage to obtain citizenship and enrol to vote, which is unlikely to happen before 2029, given the 4 year residency requirement, the AEC would be required to redraw the electoral boundaries to rebalance the electorates. Sadly, Barrie sees a conspiracy there as well, despite the ALP losing a seat in NSW in the 2024 redistribution.

Barrie also makes numerous unfounded assumptions to support this notion that a global conspiracy is at hand, perpetrated by the left to gerrymander the electorate by immigration. It is complete and utter rwnj fanciful alarmist nonsense.

All major nation building initiatives have come under ALP Governments: the Snowy scheme, car manufacturing, Medicare, Superannuation, NDIS and NBN. The LNP have produced nothing.

If they had supported Connor’s plan, we would have had cheap energy for the last 40 years to support manufacturing etc. Instead, the LNP sold off most the power stations in Victoria, SA and NSW, at rock bottom prices.

Howard legislated to ban nuclear power in 1997, so it was logical to pursue a renewable powered grid, and the ALP went down that path. The LNP on the other hand did everything to frustrate the transition, which would have been essentially seamless if Connor’s gas-powered grid had eventuated. But look where we are now. The LNP now want to throw out 20 years of work on renewables and go down the nuclear path with SMR’s, which don’t actually exist yet, with a 20 year lead time and an undefined budget, which like every other nuclear project on the planet, will get blown out of the water.

Howard also sold off NW Shelf gas to the Chinese on a 25 year deal, which returned nothing to Australia. He also sold two thirds of our gold reserves at rock bottom prices.

The rest of Barries presentation is just an attack on Albanese and the ALP. But what his fan club doesn’t realise is if you look beneath the surface the problem is with the LNP, who embarked on a course of obstruction and frustration, who would do anything to undermine the ALP, and never accept any responsibility for their own work (eg The Voice).

I could go on about a host of other points he raises but I have better things to do.

In closing, Dutton is just a shit stirring little urger, who has not offered anything positive or visionary to improve the quality of life for us all, and never will.
