r0_222_4272_2625_w1200_h678_fmax.jpgA surfer has lost a leg in a shark attack south of Mandurah in Western Australia. The attack happened at Gearies Beach in the Mandurah suburb of Falcon an hour before sunset.

The surfer, 29-year-old Ben Gerring, was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Mandurah Mail reporter Nathan Hondros spoke to the ABC not long after the attack.

"The gentleman was on the beach by the time we got down here," Hondros said. "Ambulance crews were trying to resuscitate him...it was just quite desperate and heart wrenching scenes.

"He had lost a leg from what looked like above the knee, so it was quite a savage attack by the looks of it."

Mr Hondros said it was unclear what type of shark was behind the attack. "We had a talk to some of the surfers who were out there in the water with him, but look, they weren't in the mood to talk while their mate is in serious trouble," he said.

Gearies is a popular surfing spot for surfers and swimmer. Mandurah Board Riders president Brian Williams said he knew Gerring well and had just paddled further out into the ocean to catch a bigger wave when "all hell broke loose".

"He was right out the back looking to get a big wave, one of the set waves that had been coming through during the day," Mr Williams said. "He'd sort of paddled out the back, sort of past the pack slightly. And next thing all hell broke loose and they were trying to bring him in.

"His board was broken in half, they found the tail part of his board."

Two surfers with longboards paddled out to bring Gerring in.

“On any given day there’s probably around about 50-60 people in the water,” Mr Williams said. “I’m not sure but I think this would be the first time it’s ever actually happened here.”

Between 2010 and 2014 WA's south west had a cluster of shark attacks and fatalities. The incidents had lessened until this afternoon's attack.

Heavy alright ...hard not to shed a tear when it's one of your mates ...get well brother, I'll keep all those good surf sessions we had at the fore for positive vibes ...and to the Gerring family, this is where all your good karma comes back to rest.

I don't know Ben Gerring, but, my thoughts and good vibes go out to him and his family at this time of extreme emotions. Ben dealing with the loss of leg, family dealing with him dealing with it... One incident effects so many people.

The shark caught was a 4.2 mtr GWS which died and has now been disposed of at sea
Stomach contents would have been examined wouldn't they ?

Apparently not Udo.
When I was a grom and first paddling Gearies on the bigger, onshore days I can remember the old guys calling the reef much further out (occasionally broke in all time quality) the 'Shark Pit'.

Yep, Sharkies is the outside reef ...on macking days it links through to Gearies and beyond.

It gets its name from days gone by when the fish were plentiful...Shark Pit was the place to catch sharks.

His leg was severed but the rescuers carried it in and packed it in ice. So all accounted for it seems.
As well as the guy that got hit theres lots of very traumatised people, so all the best to them for a full recovery.

This is not meant to cause any disrespect to Ben or family/friends and I wish him all the very best in recovery.

But just going out and catching "a" shark and killing it just doesn't sit very well with me.
I'm not a tree hugging hippy, but killing an animal that "might" have been involved just seems wrong.

I don't have the answer to stop attacks, and I know it's a sensitive subject for all involved, but yeah I dunno, it's a tough one.

Dropping drum lines on that stretch is just fucking stupid ...the Dawesville Cut is less than a kay away with Bulls, Bronzies and Tigers all over the show ...i used to live on the point overlooking Avalon Point, front row, 200m from the cut...I saw more sharks in the 2 yrs i lived there than the other 15yrs i spent in WA.

R.I.P. Ben. The GWS killed had the potential to attack surfers in the area, so whether it was the actual shark involved in Ben's attack is irrelevant. At least the locals know that the chance of another attack has been reduced.

I find it baffling how there is so much hysteria about killing sharks and the trapping and killing of another protected species slips by without so much as a yelp. They recently trapped and killed the croc that took the NZ woman in QLD, hardly a peep about that. Situation is no different. Open the shark fishery again off SW WA to get some balance back.

Yep udo, exactly what I'm talking about, no one controlling the shark population anymore. The big sharks simply just don't have predators, we were their true last predator. It's just not healthy for the ecosystem for there not to be balance. I genuinely believe the sharks are coming closer due to overpopulation, and the increase in numbers is supported by evidence from people who are out in the ocean a lot, such as Joel. The shark fishery off the SW WA coast was closed in 2007 https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/31753053/search-for-shark-answers/, so near on a decade is plenty of time for populations to increase to point where it is unhealthy. Not to mention the hysteria about the drum lining over here, it was done in the wrong season. If they'd done it in winter I bet the number of white catches would have been up.

Unfortunately it's not. Absolutely RIP and condolences to his family. The grief caused by his passing and leaving behind a pregnant fiance is just incomprehensible. Cut down in his prime.
